You can search the online database in the same manner. Especially since LDS as recently redsigned the familysearch.org site. The IGI search is here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp Once you select a region, for example Nort America, you can they select a Country and then a state. You can also searc a specific year or range of years. and for specific events. It is very powerful. Tips for using it online are at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/searchigi_hints.asp >From: Cindy <ckimes@mvillage.com> >Reply-To: KEIM-L@rootsweb.com >To: KEIM-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [KEIM] HOW I broke through one "brick wall" >Date: Wed, 01 Nov 2000 09:20:53 -0500 > >If you know the State your ancestor lived in, try scanning the IGI >microfiche. I think one of my best "helps" came from the IGI microfiche. >Here's how: > >A second cousin (who I found doing an email search for other by my same >surname) shared Bible records listing the birth of my ancestor. (not >KIMES, but my maiden name) The Bible record listed the birthplace as >Holmes Co, OH, but I also had rec'd a newspaper clipping of this same >ancestor's 50th wedding anniversary writeup; there it said my ancestor >was born in Tuscarawas Co, OH. So I had those two counties to look in, >MAYBE, but for sure, in OHIO. > >Using that info, I looked in the OH section of the IGI microfiche for my >surname. Next, I scanned through the listings, looking for Holmes and >Tuscarawas County and found the marriage record of my ancestor's parents >AND two others that married in the same county at abt. the same time. > >How did this help? I searched the 'net' for mention of the other names >is those listings and found another relative doing research. Now the two >of us are working together to find out more. > >MORAL OF THIS STORY: Two heads are better than one. > >The online LDS info is great, but I've not learned if one can do >scanning in the manner described above using the online site.
