    1. [KEIM] RE: St. Thomas Church/Altonah, PA
    2. I viewed FHC film # 1305958 a few weeks ago. It included a fabulous copy of the book "History of St. Thomas' Evangelical Church", Altonah, Pa. I believe that it was originally written in 1923. Much has been written according to this lists' archives on the KEIM baptisms at Christ Union Church in Schoenersville, Pa. I was surprised myself to find what this book had to say. I'm not totally up on copyright stuff, so I'm going to break down some of the information as it would relate to KEIM researchers. I will also mention that there was some discussion in the past regarding Altoonah vs. Altonah, Pa. This Altonah was at the very beginning Northampton Co. It currently is in North Bethlehem. At the end I have listed ALL KEIM burials as of 1923. ....most were members of Lutheran and Reformed congregations at Hecktown, Shoenersvile (sic--Schoenersville), and Farmersville. These people were living in and around the settlement of Altonah, Bethlehem Twp, or the community of the Monocacy. Sometimes, it was a tremendous hardship to travel, and regular prayer was prohibitive. It was especially hard at the time of deaths and burials. They began talking of a solution, and, on Jan.1, 1848, many members met at the home of Philip Ohl. The Altonah Church, originally known as the St. Thomas' Monocacy Church, began. John Glaiss and Leopold KEIM each donated 1/2 acre on which to build a church and burial ground. They organized and held numerous meetings. They elected a building committee composed of : George Moser, Leopold KEIM, Joseph Glaiss, Philip Ohl, George Halteman, and Thomas Oberly. The church was dedicated on Nov 20, 1848. The members of the 1st consistory were: Elders,- Adam Bruch, James More, and Philip Ohl; Deacons,- Daniel Spriegel, Amandus Lerch, and Thomas Daney. The members of the first council were: Elders,-John Yound, Abraham Stoehr, and John Glaiss; Deacons,- Tobias Moser, Andrew KEIM, and John Brown, Jr. In 1892, the members called to erect a second church. The building committee consisted of George Applegate, Edward Halteman, John E. Kemmerer, Jacob D. Metzgar, Alfred L. KEIM, Milton H. Koehler, William M. Dillard, John Balliet, James W. More, and George M. Warner. Work was begun in April, 1892, tearing down the original church, and the second church was dedicated on May 7, 1893. The oldest burial place of St. Thomas Church is the Grave Yard adjoining the church building on the South. As mentioned earlier, the ground for this purpose was originally donated by Leopold KEIM and John Glaiss. The cemetery, by contrast, was first laid out in 1884. It was first suggested by Charles Warner, from whom the ground for the cemetery was purchased. As of 1923 the management of the Grave Yard was supervised by a Superintendent elected by the congregation, whereas the cemetery was controlled by a board of directors elected by the lot owners for the term of three years. The following record of burials exists relating to KEIM. There are no alternative spellings listed. It lists name, date of death, and age (I read them as year, months, days). I do not know why they were not listed together. At first I thought it was because of the different placement of the Grave Yard versus the Cemetery. However, the dates don't all fall in line. Unless, the lots to the old Grave Yard were previously purchased. Any ideas? A lot of these names appear to descend from Johannes KEIM b. 1754 and Elizabeth Kloess/Kloss Penny
