One of our subscribers wrote me with doubts in what is commonly believed as the ancestry for his KEIM/KIME lineage. Following is the email, with my comments/ideas/facts/observations inserted: Subscriber writes: > > I have come to doubt that Henry Kime, who died in 1802 in Bath County, > VA, is the Heinrich Keim, son of Johannes Keim of Oley, PA. > Is it not true that several of Henry's children were christened in Frederick Co, MD? (or was it Frederickstown, MD?) Whichever, it isn't that far removed from Chester, Philadelphia, and Bucks Cos. where some of the older sons from Johannes's first marriage settled. Has anyone from the line tried to trackdown descendants of the two daughters from Henry's first marriage..... Christina (Kimes) Martingood and Catherine (Kimes) Deale? Also, Henry DID name one son Johann Heinrich Kime. (You know, JOHANN, maybe after Johannes?????) Of course Johann was a common name in those days! > > I don't have all the pages of the Keim and Allied Families papers, but > on one written in September 1900, it mentions other Keim names who came > from the Palatinate of the Circle of the Rhine, Germany. > At one time the early immigrants from the "Old Country" were posted to this list. You might try searching the archives for this list of the early immigrants, or perhaps someone has this list handy and will post it again. > > One mentioned was that Philip Kime was the first of the Keim name who > went to North Carolina (page 374) of the K/A) I don't have that page. > Seems the descendants of Philip Kime of NC have found info indicating Philip was born in Germany. > Also on another page (the number of the page did not print) it reads: > > "Mrs. J. S. Davis, of Philadelphia, daughter of John Keim, son of > Jacob Keim, son of Stephen Keim, son of Johannes Keim, the Founder, of > Oley, PA, who has devoted much research to the Keim Family, in a letter > dated Philadelphia, August 8, 1898, writes: > "I have found a lovely family of Keim in North Carolina. They have the same story > I heard from a child up of the three brothers that came from Germany" > What were the names of the three brothers?????? > > Mrs. Davis did not give his birthdate. He may have been too young to > be Henry Kime's father. > Philip Kime from NC DID have a son Henry, but Philip's son has been listed as marrying Hannah Rudolph. That line is pretty well documented. > > Henry's first child, Conrad, was born in 1763. Seems if Henry had been connected to that line there would be other Conrads in the family. > > So, figuring Henry would be about 21 years old at the birth of his > first child, would make his birthdate about 1742. > I always figured Henry named his first born son Conrad after his brother, Conrad Keim, b. ca 1734, son of Johannes. (My husband's direct ancestor) Also, seems many of the males of this era were older than 21 when they had their first child. Conrad Keim was abt. 24; George, another brother, was abt. 30; Stophel (Stephen) Keim was older; Hans Nickel was abt. 27; Jacob, more than 22. > > I know that the name would have been originally spelled Keim, as the > family were definitely German and spoke German clear down to my > grandfather. Kime is not a German spelling. However, my Henry > spelled his name Henry Kime on the marriage bond for his daughter > in 1789. > Many of the KEIM branches lost the original spelling when they moved out of PA. If one looks for the KEIM spelling in VA, I don't think you find any in the earlier days. In my husband's line, the NY branch used the KIME spelling, and the rest of the family moved to Ohio and used the KIME spelling. Our particular line moved on to Indiana and came to spell the name KIMES. AND, I think Sylvia reminded us long ago that the original spelling from Germany was lost when our ancestors immigrated to the U.S.! Wasn't the original - KIHM or KEHM? > > Do you know of anyone searching Philip Kime of North Carolina? > YES, we have a several who are subscribers to the KEIM list - Diana, Harold, Bill, Lori; perhaps others, known to Diana Davis who maintains a website for Philip's descendants. ____________________ That ends the email....
