A newpaper article in Chester co. Hist. Soc. tells of Daniel Keim, son of James Keim, (Warwick twp.-Chester co.) Daniel went with a Levi Cook and Daniel was back to Pa. on a visit and had been living in Kansas for a year or better. This was 1884, in March. Don't know if this will help the Keim's in midwest with inf. or not??? Gwen Carnes
Yesterday I was wandering through the Rootsweb edition of Davis' 1877 History of Northampton PA (chapters 28 - 33) and found muster list for PA volunteers in the War of 1812 (2nd War of Independence, as it was called in the document) It showed a "J. Keim" as private in the 3rd company, ? regiment, 2nd brigade, 2nd division under the command of Captain William Fisher. Is there some way I might determine J's full first name and maybe fit him in to some one's family tree? --- Eileen Keim --- ekeim1@earthlink.net --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
Forwarded from the current owner of a Benneville Keim property. ________________ Dear Cindy: I have been distracted from my Keim investigations lately, but can tell you what I know and given some time could try to investigate further. Let me start by saying that it is difficult sometimes to keep track of the various "players" as there are several George Keims, several Bennevilles, etc. Sons, cousins, uncles, etc. of each other. Now for what I am fairly certain of: George Musselman Keim (son of George Keim and grandson of Johannes Keim) was born in 1776 and died in 1859 and had a whole tribe of children. In 1858, prior to his impending death as was often done in those days, he apparently sold or transferred property to a number of his children (the sons). I have seen deeds from George Keim (middle initial not always included) in the year 1858 selling property: * in Pike township to John Keim * in Pike township to Joel Keim * in Pike township to George M Keim ( the M is for Mensch his mothers maiden name) * a release not noting where (I'll have to get the deed) from George Kime to William M Keim & John M. Keim * in Rockland township to Benneville Keim These names check out for his sons. I have not really investigated any of these in detail, except as relates to Benneville Keim. This is the home I live in today. It is not from anything I have seen the hereditary land/ farm passed from Johannes to George, then George M. Nor is it the Gheer farm, or other names. There is no cemetery apparent on any of the properties today which were part of the original farm which Benneville owned. To the best of my knowledge my property (thru Benneville) is approximately 2 miles from the original Keim homestead and about 1/2 mile over the hill as the crow flies from the Jacob Keim homestead where the last living direct decendant Elizabeth died in if I recall correctly 1911 or 1912. Regarding the Benneville Keim property I am in, and I have not been able to complete the search, it was originally purchased (in various bits and pieces) by George Musselman Keim in the 1840's. The deeds prior to this have been elusive to find, but I have seen references to the names of James Lessig, Daniel & CatherineYoung, and John and Barbara Heth as prior owners back through at least 1831. These people are listed in local church and census records and knew the Keim family, often worshipped at the same church, etc., but I haven't gotten much past this yet. This property was sold by George Keim senior as he is called in the deed (but in fact is George Musselman Keim and his wife Susanna (Mensch) Keim) to their son Benneville Keim (born 1809 and died 1873). As noted in your email, upon the death of Benneville ( I have both Benneville and George Musselman Keim wills) in 1873 the farm was left to Benneville's wife until her death in 1894 at which time it was left half each to Susan Keim (who was married to Moses Everhard/Everhart) and Emma Keim (who was married to John Y. Shade). In 1895 Moses Everhard and his wife Susan sold their half of the property to John Y. Shade (who owned the other half with his wife Emma). The property stayed in the Shade family until the 1950s. I have copies of all these deeds through several other owners, then to myself last year. The property was originally about 120+ acres but now the original stone house is on 8.5 acres. Moses Everhart and his wife Susan did own other property in the area, but I have never investigated where precisely it was located. I did once look briefly for land transfers in the name of Moses B. Everhart. The only deeds I ever saw with Moses B. Everhart's name on them, other than the sale of 1/2 the farm to the Shade family, were: *the purchase of land in Pike township from May Ann R. Keim in 1895 - I do not know who May Ann R. Keim is related to. Deed in Vol.232 Page 509 *the purchase of land in Oley township from Henry A. Muhlenberg in 1892. Deed in Vol 211 Page 529 *the purchase of land in Pike township from George R. Richard in 1915. Deed in Vol. 441 Page 133 Off hand, I would say the trick might be to find out if May Ann R. Keim was related to one of the other sons of George Musselman Keim who got land in 1858, which would probably then tie in with the property everone is trying to locate that apparently passed from Johannes to George to George Musselman. One thing to keep in mind. The genealogy of townships might be important. Originally the area was Oley township. In 1758 Rockand was split off, in 1759 District was split off and in 1781 Earl was split off. Pike was split off in 1812. I believe the land you are interested in was originally in Oley but eventually, and today, is in Pike township - though I am not certain. One final note. The book by Pendelton is excellant and the maps great, but the scale among the maps on different pages varies a bit sometimes and it can be difficult, even living in the area, to identify current township lines against the old maps with great precision. I am a bit tied up right now but in the next couple of weeks I will try to get to the court house in Reading, and to talk to some of the locals to get more info on the original Johannes homestead, its location, etc. and how it might tie in with the Everhart side. Hope this has clarified something and not made things more confusing. Best regards, Carl ___________________ NOTE: Carl has been researching the ownership of the home where he lives. Don't have a copy of the book, but this is the same George that we are discussing in Ref, to GHEER Farm Elizabeth GHEER/GIER/GEIR/GEIGER is believed by some to be his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Musselman being his first. However, I still don't feel as though this has been solidly proven. Anyway, here is what I have on him in my database: individual Summary - 15 Feb 2001 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Name: George KEIM Sex: Male Father: Johannes (Hans) KEIM (abt 1675 - 1753) Mother: Maria Elizabeth BOLLER (1713 - bet 1779 and 1792) Individual Facts Birth 1733 Oley Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania Death aft 22 Jun 1807 (age 74) Oley Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania Notes (Individual) General: It is believed that this George Keim received 200 acres of the original Johannes Keim plantation in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania in a quit claim deed dated the 29th of April, 1762. In 1775 George (Jerg) KEIM owned all the land that had been owned by Johannes KEIM in 1725 and 1750. George also obtained acreage from the Penn family by patent the 22nd of June, 1807. The oldest building now on this property was erected by a George KEIM in 1835. It is located near Pikeville on Oysterdale Road just west of the Lobacheville Road intersection. This property was sold in 1895 to Moses EVERHARD (Everhand), husband of Susan KEIM (daughter of Benneville KEIM). George died in Oley Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He had at least seven children. Notes (Family #1) Marriage: George had 2 wives: Elizabeth GHEER/GIER/GEIR/GEIGER and Elizabeth MUSSELMAN. It is not known in which order that they were married, or who had which children. we can presume that George was married to Elizabeth Musselman bef 1776 (There was a George Musselman KEIM b. in 1776). My thought on the order of marriage is that George Married Elizabeth Musselman 1st and Elizabeth GHEER 2nd. My reasoning is this: George receives the KEIM homestead in 1762. He leaves the estate to his wife Elizabeth when he dies aft. 6/1807. The KEIM burial plot where Johannes (b 1675) is buried is noted as being on the GHEER farm in 1894. I was just searching the info on Nicholas Keim b.1719 to Johannes Keim b. abt. 1675. The headstones mentioned in my email (More on Gheer Farm, Keim Property, and Burial Sites) must be two of Nicholas' grandchildren. Hans Nickel Keim (John Nicholas Keim) and his wife Barbara Schneider had three children one of whom was John Keim born in 1749. John Keim married Susanna deBenneville in 1771. I think the 70 years and 4 days refers to John Keim. He was born the 6th of July, 1749 and died the 10th of February, 1819 which comes out to 69 yr., 7 mon., 4 days. Susanna was born the 15th of May, 1748 and died the 15th of June, 1837. John and Susanna had eight children. Two of whom were: 1. John Keim born the 20th of February, 1777 died the 21st of December, 1777 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. (It's easy to mistake a 7 for a 1.) 2. Catherine Keim born the 3rd of August 1781 and died the 9th of January, 1784 in Reading, Berks Co., PA. (August 3rd instead of 5th makes the age on the headstone make sense.) It looks like the reader of the gravestone missread some of the dates. Zum Audenken - von Johannes Keim u Frau Susanna, Sterbt d. Decem., obiden yahre sein alter 70 mos. u 4 Tag. Zum Audenken von Johan Keim u Fr. Susann, folgende Kinder ruhe, also Kinder von Johan Keim und Catherina geb 20 Feb., geb de 5 Augst. This would make her born 1713, which date would correspond. He married her in 1731 when she was 18 years of age." In Memory of Maria Elizabeth died the 2nd of June, 1772, died at age 59. This means these graves are probably in the Schneider-Keim Family Cemetery on the old Schneider property along with those of Nicholas and Barbara Keim. It appears that one time long ago at least two researchers thought Johannes Keim and maybe Maria Elizabeth were buried in the Schneider-Keim plot. We couldn't find them when we were there. But, some headstones are stacked against the walls. Others are probably gone, and most are very worn. Susan
Looking again in "Oley Valley Heritage The Colonial Years: 1700-1775," by Philip E. Pendleton I did find an Antony Geiger of Robeson Township. He was a resident in Douglass Township, Philadelphia County. He had land in 1750 bordering the Schuylkill River and the Exeter Zone. Could this be a relative of Elizabeth Gheer/Gier/Geir/Geiger? Susan
This is long but I know of no other way to convey my research, thoughts, and questions. Jeff said, > If you read these, it talks about 2 properties comprising the original > homestead. > 1 on Keim (Boyer) rd. southwest of Lobachsville > and the second at Oysterdale and Lobachsville roads at the village of > Pikeville. According to the article, The Pikeville property was the one > that George Keim inherited in 1762 The property near Pikeville is the original Johannes Keim property later owned by George Keim. This property is on the border of Oley, Rockland, and East District. The Keim property on Boyer Road is the Jacob Keim property owned by Jacob, the son of Johannes Keim b. abt. 1675. This property was originally part of the Johannes Hoch property (Jacob's wife's father) not part of the original Keim property. In the book, "The Oley Valley Heritage The Colonial Years: 1700-1775" by Philip E. Pendleton, 1994. The author has mapped the land ownership in 1725, 1750, and 1775 in Exeter, Oley, and the Amity Zones. In 1775 George Keim owned all the land that was owned previously in 1725 and 1750 by Johannes Keim. In 1750 the Johannes Hoch property is a large parcel on the border of the Oley Zone and Rockland Township. It appears Johannes Hoch increased his property holdings after 1750 and then died. In 1775 the Jacob Keim property is a parcel bordered on the east and west by the estate of Johannes Hoch. Abraham Hoch has the major portion of the original Johannes Hoch property from 1750 adjoining the easternmost parcel of the estate of Johannes Hoch. All these parcels lie near or on the boundary between Oley and Rockland Townships. It seems to me that part of one of these parcels may have become the Gheer Farm. Note below where it states that the Gheer Farm is on the Oley line. However, in 1750 a very large parcel of land on the border of the Exeter and Oley Zones was the estate of Johannes Schneider, father of Barbara Schneider, the wife of Nicholas Keim (another son of Johannes Keim b. abt. 1675). The Keim-Schneider family burial plot is located on this parcel of land. (I went there in 2000 and found no grave of Johannes Keim. Nicholas Keim and his wife Barbara are buried there.) In 1775 this parcel was divided between Peter and Johann Jacob Schneider. This too could later have become the Gheer Farm and would be on the Oley line. In 1750 Nicholas Keim also owned a parcel of land in the Exeter Zone very near Hughes' Tavern. He didn't own it in 1725 and no longer owned any land in Oley, Amity, or Exeter Zones in 1775. I don't know if this is the Nicholas, son of Johannes Keim. In 1775 most of this parcel was then owned by Edward Hughes. Jeff continued, > The article mentions 2 Keim burial plots on the Keim Rd. property. The two burial sites are near the present Jacob Keim property and were at one time part of the Jacob Keim property which was earlier owned by Johannes Hoch. One site is where Jacob and his wife Magdalena are buried. Theirs are the only gravestones in this plot. The second site is mostly Jacob's son, John, and his progeny. The grave of Johannes Keim b. abt. 1675 is not located in either site as far as I know. But, I have not seen a list of all headstones located in the larger family plot and didn't get inside the walls to view all the headstones close up when I was there. Jeff sent this, I have tried to add translations to what he sent although I am not great at this. "Notes of a drive through Oley township with Jonas DeTurck, of Neversink, Fall of 1894. This would make her born 1713, which date would correspond. He married her in 1731 when she was 18 years of age." In Memory of Maria Elizabeth died the 2nd of June, 1772, died at age 59. Please follow this and see if it makes sense: 1. It looks to me as if Johan Keim and Catherine are the children of Johan Keim and his wife Susann. 2. Johan Keim, the son, was born the 20th of February, 1771 and died the 21st of December, of either 1771 at age 10 months, 1 day or in 1781 at the age of 10 yrs, 10 months, 1 day. 3. Catherina, their daughter, was born the 5th of August, 1781 and died the 9th of January, 1784 at the age of 2yr., 5 mon., 6 days (looks like four days to me). 4. The Jacob Keim b.1724 (son of Johannes Keim b. abt. 1675) had a son named Johannes "John" Jacob Keim b. 1756. "John" married Susan Weidner and they lived on the Boyer Rd. Keim property. Are these the Johan and Susanna on this headstone? "John" would have been only 15 and Susan only 14 when Johan b. 1771 was born but this is possible although seems improbable. Susan is said to have been born in 1757 and died in 1825. I don't know how accurate these dates are and where they came from. They make her 68 at the time of her death, not 70. 5. John and Susanna had one surviving son that I know of, Jacob Keim born in 1787. He was the next owner of the Jacob Keim property on Boyer Rd. Is he the brother of Johan and Catherina? I guess my next questions are: Where was this headstone? Is it located in the burial site on Boyer Rd.? If so then these could very likely be the son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren of Jacob Keim b. 1724. But it says "on the Gheer farm on the Oley line." Was the property across the road from the present Jacob Keim property somehow owned by a Gheer by 1894 before the death of the last Keim to own the house on Boyer Rd.? Elizabeth Keim died in 1911 and the property was sold in 1912 to M. H. Boyer. Or was the Gheer property the old Schneider land? Or the Johannes Keim/George Keim land? Or the Nicholas Keim land where no one has looked for a Johannes Keim burial spot as far as I know. All these parcels are on various boundaries between Oley and other zones except the Nicholas Keim land. Is there someome who can check the three known Keim family burial sites carefully and also check out further about the Nicholas Keim property in Exeter Township? More questions than answers. Susan
Does anyone out there have the book "Keim and the Allied Families:? If so, would you mind looking up George Keim - b-1733 PA - m- Elizabeth Geiger - 5 children - Heinrich, Samuel Henry, John, Susan & George. Thank you for your help. Jan Keim

Sorry for the confusion. I was quoting a post from someone named Don, e-mail address below. He is the one who can answer your question. It was pointed out to me that your mother's maiden name is often used as a password when getting a credit card...even if she is deceased, I feel uncomfortable putting ANYONE on that close. Diana My Email address is changing to ddavis59@sc.rr.com Website: http://www.my-ged.com/davis/
