    1. [KEIM] Fw: [NCGUILFO] Land Grants
    2. Diana Davis
    3. Forwarding FYI ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fredric Z. Saunders" <fzsaund@ix.netcom.com> To: <NCGUILFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 16, 2001 7:17 PM Subject: [NCGUILFO] Land Grants > Ted, > > There were 4 steps in the process of obtaining land: > 1. Entry- The applicant submitted a rough description of the land to which he wished to obtain title. > > 2. Warrant- A warrant was issued to the surveyor to go to the land and complete a survey of the rough description. > > 3. Survey- The surveyor would go to the land and do a metes and bounds survey of the exact boundaries of the land. > > 4. Grant -After paying the appropriate fees, then [in this case the state] would issue a grant (deed) giving the person title to the land. > > People who squatted on the land after the Granville Office closed (1763) were left without any way of obtaining clear title to the land until 1778 when the state offices opened. Yes, they may have been living there for many years before the land was granted. One clue that may be found indicating this is when the entry mentions something along the lines of "xxx acres on ------- Creek including his own improvement." > > If the land was in Guilford County, it would not have been for military service. NC Grants for military service are in what is now Tennessee. > > Rick Saunders > http://genealogypro.com/fsaunders.html >

    1. [KEIM] HOW-2 Organize
    2. Cindy
    3. Some of you may be at a point where you need some ideas on HOW to better organize your findings and information you've saved on your computer. Ancestry.com has a helpful article on file management titled, "UNTANGLING YOUR FOLDERS." This article, by Drew Smith, may be found at: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/digital/digital.asp Look for Drew Smith's name or the title "Untangling Your Folders." Don't know how long they keep these articles online, so if you like what you read you may want to print it now!

    1. [KEIM] Manatawny Creek location
    2. Cindy
    3. Found kind of a neat map, brousing the Northumberland Co GenWeb site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/northumberp/map3.jpg If someone would take a look.... I see the Schuylkill River. So is Manatawny Creek the one right below the "T" in the "BERKS COUNTY" label on the map? Kind of looks like the name! Or am I looking too far up the river? Perhaps the next map listed is a better one. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/northumberp/map4.jpg

    1. [KEIM] 1890 Federal Census Fragments-- Free for about a week at Ancestry
    2. Diana Davis
    3. 1890 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS FRAGMENT These records have been extracted from the remaining population schedules for the 1890 Federal Census, which was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921. The surviving fragments consist of 1,233 pages or pieces, including enumerations for fragments of Alabama, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas. The records of only 6,160 of the 62,979,766 people enumerated survived the fire. The original 1890 census enumerated people differently than ever before that time. Each family was enumerated on a separate sheet of paper. 1890 was the only year this was done. Source Information: Ancestry.com. "1890 U.S. Federal Census Fragment." [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2001. Data imaged from: National Archives and Records Administration. "1890 United States Federal Census, M407, 3 rolls." Was this strictly a list of Northampton Co, PA military personnel? If so, maybe a look at 1810 census index for Northampton Co, PA would list all the "J. KEIMs". Someone on this list must have some expertise on researching ancestors in the military!

    3. The bio on a Daniel Keim at: http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Stump44/93members2.html mentions his brother was a brick layer Karen posted a bio 27 Nov 1999, on John Keim, the "boy brick maker." This is probably the same John referred to in the bio on Daniel of Danville. See: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/K/KEIM+1999+409660716+F for Karen's post
