Does anyone know who Arthur S. and Harold Z. Kimes's father was? Arthur and Harold were two of three children both to Ada and ???? who were both born in Indiana (as listed on census schedules). I'm thinking it was a KIMES from the Ottumwa, IA area; Ada's parents were living there in 1870 and 1880. Hmmm... an 1885 IA state census MIGHT list the family. As a follow up to my last e-mail, it might be of use to list the "census day" for the various census years. This is the day that was the official day to report who was living in a residence. The "enumeration day" was the day that the census taker showed up at the door. Knowing the census day for the various years some times helps determine a time frame for birthdays, and other useful stuff. 1790 - August 2 1800 - August 4 1810 - August 6 1820 - August 7 1830 - 1900 - June 1 1910 - April 15 1920 - January 1 These are from an article by William Dollarhide that appeared in the Jul/Aug 1998 issue of HERITAGE QUEST. Cindy, The "official" census date for 1870 was June 1. That is, everyone was suppose to report who was alive and living in a resident on that date, no matter when the census taker actually showed up at the front door. So sounds like Peter Kime would still have been around on June 1, thus listed. Here's something odd... The 1870 census for Greenfield Twp, LaGrange Co, IN, lists a Peter Kime, age 88. One would think this the PETER KEIM buried on Pretty Prairie [LaGrange Co] on 29 July 1870. That Peter was listed at age 88 years, 10 months and some days at death, yet the census was taken 9th August, 1870... that's AFTER the burial date. Can someone explain?
