    2. I don't know if this is what happened. A young couple moved into our neighborhood and attended the church I attend. I was excited and thought I had found a relative of my neighbor. The young man told me that they had traced their ancestry and that the name of his family back to the Civil War days was a different name. That his ancestor lived in a southern state and he disagreed with the south and in order to avoid being drafted he ran away and escaped to the northern states and changed his name and never changed it back to the correct name. 2. And then, of course, there is my family who seem to change their names at will to things seemingly unrelated to their original names, tho there must be a good reason in their minds. Go figure! In a message dated 4/1/2006, [email protected] writes: there are several reasons why one would change their name. they owed debts they couldn't pay so changed to another family name, there was a death in the family and all children were given to another family and their names were changed to that last name, feud took place among family so they disowned each other and changed their name. there were cases where an adoption took place when the eldest mentioned may have lost parents then he found out later what his real name was and took that name on. who knows? From: Cindy Kimes [email protected] ~ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2006 17:13:42 -0800 (PST) An old query from Mar 1997 states: >Alfred KIME-RYAN: A real mystery family! We have a Bible record showing the names, birth, marriage records of the Kime family who lived in Vernon Co MO at the beginning of the Civil War. Alfred KIME(s) married 12 Aug 1858 in Vernon Co MO to Leanner (Leanora), dau of William BETHELL and Margaret BRUCE. For some unknown reason, the entire family started using the name of RYAN between 1860/1870, and this name continued even through their relocation to Indian Territory in 1892 and deaths in Oklahoma. Does anyone know any possible reason for this change of names?

    1. Report of Brigadier General William H. Keim,
    2. _http://home.att.net/~edboots/or.htm#Williamsburg_ (http://home.att.net/~edboots/or.htm#Williamsburg) Series I - Vol. 11 - Chapter XXIII - Page 561 & 562 BATTLE OF WILLIAMSBURG, VA. No.58. Report of Brigadier General William H. Keim, U.S. Army, commanding Second Brigade. HDQRS. KEIM'S BRIGADE, CASEY'S DIVISION, Williamsburg, Va., May 8,1862. CAPTAIN: Owing to severe indisposition I followed my brigade slowly, it being in temporary command of Colonel Howell on May 5. When I arrived the Eighty-fifth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers was in front, then the One hundred and third Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Major Gazzam commanding; next the One hundred and first Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Colonel Wilson. The Ninety-sixth Regiment New York Volunteers, Lieutenant-Colonel Gray commanding, had been ordered by General Sumner to protect the Eighth New York Battery and after the regular battery of Robertson. The brigade advanced to the support of General Palmer's brigade. The Eighty-fifth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Colonel Howell, was in advance of General Palmer's brigade over the fence into the woods under a brisk fire of the enemy. At that time, when the fire was hot and heaviest, General Keyes rode up and addressed my brigade a few spirit-stirring remarks, who heartily cheered the general and resumed the work of destruction with more zeal. General Palmer being called off, I assumed command of the Ninety-second (Colonel Anderson's) and the Ninety-third (Lieutenant-Colonel Butler's) Regiments New York Volunteers. I ordered Colonel Howell to the front to relieve the Ninety-third Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, who immediately encountered a sweeping fire, which was returned with spirit and effect. The One hundred and first Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Colonel Wilson, I ordered to the left of the clearing across the road as a reserve. The One hundred and third Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Major Gazzam commanding, was also ordered to the front, to support General Peck. I was assigned the command of the left, General Peck the center, and General Devens the right. About 5.30 the musketry fire had nearly ceased, the battery in front keeping up its fire until dark, two hours afterward. Taking into consideration that the men had only one day's rations since Sunday morning, no overcoats, woolen or gum blankets, they evinced a spirit of endurance and heroic courage worthy of veterans, and the men and officers are entitled to praise for their arduous and successful efforts. The troops remained under arms all night, rainy and unpleasant. I was with General Peck and General Couch during the night. Sounds were heard of cutting wood, and commands were given to "Forward, march," which induced a belief that the enemy were about evacuating. At daybreak I ordered a company of Colonel Howell's regiment to reconnoiter toward the fort. Everything appeared quiet, when some cavalry from Williamsburg rode downward into the fort, so they withdrew. After the cavalry left the fort the effort was renewed and were steadily advancing, when General Heintzelman rode up and ordered my men back, he entering the deserted forts first which my brigade had aided materially to conquer. My staff officers, Captain N.L. Jeffries, assistant adjutant-general, and Lieutenant Stewart, jr., aide-de-camp, rendered me efficient aid. The state of my health must be the apology for this imperfect report. Respectfully submitted. WM. H. KEIM, Brigadier-General, Commanding. Captain HENRY W. SMITH, Assistant Adjutant-General, Casey's Division.

    1. My Keim/Kimes Lineage
    2. Following Mitzie's lineage & from the same branch of Heinrich Keim, our lineages diverge at the son of Jacob Kimes & Sarah Hicks. Mitzie's husband Chase & I are 3rd cousins. Abraham Kimes & Nancy Evans are my 3xgreat-grandparents. Jacob Kimes & Sarah Hicks are my 2xgreat-grandparents. Their son (& brother to Mitzie's Scott Winfield Kimes) is Abraham John Kimes (1858 OH - 1946 NE) m Daisy Dean Morton (1875 NE - 1939 NE), who are my great-grandparents; their daughter Bertha Ellen Kimes (1892 NE - 1982 IA) m William Alvin Brown (1889 NE - 1946 IA), my maternal grandparents; their daughter Doris Elaine Brown (1923 NE - living still at age 83) m Carl Jens Hansen Eldhardt (1921 NE - 1994 IA), my parents. I am their middle of 3 daughters. My maiden name is Sharon Elaine Eldhardt (married surname now Sherman), born 1947 WA & obviously still living tho some days are questionable. I have 2 daughters, 1 son and 7 grandchildren. For the newer Keim/Kimes researchers, I need to establish that the lineage prior to Heinrich is in question. Many of us in this lineage are suspect of which Heinrich exactly we descended from. It has not been proven that our Heinrich is a son of The American Founder Johannes Hans Keim. I have been researching all my genealogy lines for nigh onto 40 yrs now & still am always thrilled to have new relatives find me. Also always willing to share info & learn from others.

    2. So we're all on the same page then, the referred to JOHN PETER KEIM is: possibly the grandson of The American Founder Johannes Hans Keim; thru his possible son Johannes Peter Keim; to his possible son JOHANN PETER KEIM (b 1743/45) <- THIS ONE. His son then is the Nicholas Keim (b 1768 - d 1830) who married 3 times (Stutzman, Hostetler & Eash/Ash). Recognizing that the 2 above possible ancestors of Johann Peter Keim (b 1743/45) is definitely in question, is this the correct one? And is that what you're trying to establish, if at all possible - the origins of JOHN PETER KEIM (b 1743/45)? Sherry in Colorado In a message dated 3/26/2006, [email protected] writes: Perhaps this statement better identifies WHICH John Peter Keim we're going to be discussing: John Peter Keim, father of Nicholas Keim, was born 1745. [Nicholas Keim, b. 1768]

    3. Yes, that's the one! Wouldn't it be nice if someone would "come forward" with some as yet not published information to identify John Peter Keim's true ancestry! I'm just hopeful we can MAYBE resolve some of the false statements passed around about him. In my data files where I "stockpile" all the info you subscribers have shared on this list and information from other researchers, I have these several statements about our subject - John Peter Keim. Perhaps rather than toss them out one at a time, it would be better to list them all. More About JOHANN PETER KEIM: Name 2: (John) Peter Keim Name 3: John Peter Keim Name 4: Peter Keim Date born 1: ca 1743 Date born 2: 1734, Baden, Germany Date born 3: 1736 - 1745 Date born 4: 1741 Date born 5: ca 1745, Oley, Philadelphia Co, PA Date born 6: Bef. 1746 Date born 7: Bef. 1751 Died 1: Aft. 07 August 1798 Died 2: Aft. 1781 Died 3: April 1787, near Reading, Berks Co, PA Immigration: 31 August 1750 Migration: later moved to East Nantmeal Twp, Chester Co PA Residence 1: 1767, Western District Twp, Berks Co, PA Residence 2: Elk Lick, Somerset Co PA Residence 3: West Pikeland Twp, Chester Co, PA Residence 4: 1772, Colebrookdale Twp, Berks Co, PA Residence 5: Aft. 1772, Chester Spring, Chester Co, PA NOW, does anyone see a statement they KNOW is false? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
