    1. [KEHR] End of KEHR Mailing List at Ancestry
    2. Ancestry is closing ALL of its Mailing Lists on March 2.  ONLY the past messages [called the List Archives] will remain viewable in the future.  ALL Message Boards, however, will remain open as usual. There are no 'new' Mailing Lists being made by Ancestry to replace the current ones expiring now.  Each Listowner [Manager] can begin a new List somewhere else on the internet if they are able to, however that is a task that is difficult to complete for many current Listowners including myself. There is a website called Groups.io that some of the Listowners have selected as a place they are going to start up a Mailing List like Rootsweb had for their surnames of interest or locations.  I will be starting a Groups List for some of the surnames I have an interest in however not all have been active for several years, there are no subscribers for many of the surname Lists I formerly managed.  This Kehr List had 21 subscribers and that was over 2 years ago.  I will get a few of these surname Lists started this week at Groups.io however it won't be all.  Anyone reading this will need to go to the homepage [Groups.io] and look above the elephant herd picture on the left side of blue bar for the clickable phrase Find Or Creat A Group.  A new page will then appear with a box on the left side showing topics, one is a search By Name.  Enter Kehr [or any other surname you might be researching] and see if any Group has been created yet. Joining is FREE and it seems to be a bit more user friendly than before. Please read Dick Eastman's blurb on the Ancestry shutdown of these Lists and how Groups.io works... https://blog.eogn.com/2020/01/10/groups-io-the-do-it-yourself-replacement-for-disappearing-message-boards-and-mailing-lists/ Tiny URL is this...      https://tinyurl.com/wravfcf Its a rather long discussion though it quikly covers a lot of needed topics for internet users and explains options other than signing up at Groups.io.  To subscribe, basically you find the Kehr Group [after I set it up, it will show upon searching for Kehr surname] The surname page has a tab or button to click saying you want to JOIN it.  Of course a Password and eMail address are going to be needed by then to complete the sign up. You receive a welcoming eMail and learn how to send comments, questions, pictures and data to the List and how to UNsubscribe later.  Consider personally starting a surname group for any of your own family names. I do hope this small group of ours gets active again and that Groups.io will be a safe, sincere and simple solution to losing the Mailing Lists.  I will post to the new KEHR List once it gets started.  Hope we get some new subscribers !  Meg Greenwood / Former Admin for Ancestry's Kehr Mailing List =========================================================

    1. Re: [KEHR] KEHR Family Photographs
    2. Lydia Kehr via
    3. Dear Shelley, You are diligent and dear to make such extensive inquiries about these old pictures. I hope by now you have found the descendants. My Kehrs arrived in NYC from Germany about 1948 and shortly thereafter they moved to Allamakee, Iowa. They and their descendants stayed in that corner of Iowa/Wisconsin/Minnesota almost until the present day except for a few who went to California in the early 1900s. So it's unlikely your photos belong to any of my family. Thanks for writing. Lydia From: Shelley Cardiel via <kehr@rootsweb.com> To: KEHR@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, February 8, 2015 11:06 AM Subject: [KEHR] KEHR Family Photographs I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the KEHR Family.  The first is one of Dora KEHR and Pete KINDIG which was taken at the E. M. Mudge Studio in Elkhart, IN. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with both appearing to be in their teens or 20's at the time. The second photograph is one of Joe KEHR which was likely taken between 1910-1920 when Joe was just about 2 years old.  A note on the back also indicates that the photograph was "taken in Alberta" and that Joe is "Roy's oldest son".  Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information: Peter Henry KINDIG was b. 2 Mar 1882 in Olive Township, IN to parents Aaron KINDIG and Emeline INBODY.  Peter married Vesta HALL (1891-1984- dau of William I. 1. [KEHR] HAYNES - HUME - KEHR Family Photographs
    2. Shelley Cardiel via
    3. I've "rescued" three old photographs which belong to the HAYNES and HUME Families. The first is a photograph of Estella Barbara HAYNES which is dated 1907. In addition to her name someone has written "Mother MAIDEN" and "E.J.'s Mother" on the back of the photograph. She appears to be in her 20's at the time. The second and third photographs are copies of an earlier photograph of Wilber Isaac HUME and Estella Barbara HAYNES, likely taken in the 1890's and then copied later. Information on the back of the photograph states that Wilber was b. 30 Jan 1863, married Estella 29 Mar 1893, and died of Typhoid Fever 26 Oct 1895. Also noted is the birth of their son, Edwin James HUME on 17 Aug 1895 in Garwin, IA. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Wilbur or Wilber Isaac Hume was born 30 Jan 1861 in Hubbard, OH to parents Edwin Edward W. HUME (b. 1833) and Amanda Annon NELSON (1833-1880). Wilber was one of 8 children born to this couple including, Wilber Isaac; Mary Olivia; Charles Nelson; Frank; Anna Viola; Ella Mary; and Delmar James; and Frank Alfred HUME, all born between 1861 and 1876. The family surname may have later been changed to HUMES by some. Wilber married Estella Barbara HAYNES on 29 Mar 1893 in Tama Co. IA. The couple had only one child, Edwin James HUME b. 17 Aug 1895 in Garwin, IA. Wilbur died 26 Oct 1895 and is buried in the Dobson Cemetery in Garwin, IA. Their son Edwin James HUME b. 17 Aug 1885 in Garwin, IA married Myrtle Marie KEHR (b. 20 Mar 1900) on 1 June 1919. Edwin was living in Vulcan, Alberta, Canada in 1917 but traveled to Carlton, IA when he was registered for the WWI draft, listing his occupation as Farmer. He was in Seattle, WA by the time he registered for the draft in 1942. Estella Barbara HAYNES HUME MAIDEN was b. 28 Apr 1871 in Carlton, IA to parents James Marion HAYNES (b. 23 Feb 1849 in Tama, IA-d. 1919 in Carlton, IA) and Shady Ann STRONG (b. 29 Jan 1852 in West Mansfield, OH-d. 8 Jun 1873 in Tama Co. IA giving birth to her second daughter). Estella had one sibling, a sister Shady Ann HAYNES b. 8 Jun 1873. After her Mother's death in 1873 her father married Melissa May KIRKMAN or KERKMAN (1858-1931) and they had 10 more children including, Ella Mae; Warren Silves; Mary Nellie "Nell"; Della J.; John Oscar; Ada A.; Louis A.; Orley; Rolla "Rollie" Russell; Elpha or Helfu W. HAYNES, all born between 1875 and 1893. Estella died 27 Feb 1847 or 1848 in Vulcan, Alberta, Canada and is buried in the Vulcan Cemetery there. After Wilber's death Estella married Francis Marion or Marion Francis MAIDEN (b. 21 Sept 1867 in Tama Co. IA son of Joseph MAIDEN and Maria GRANT) on 30 Nov 1898 in Rockton, IA and together they had 3 children, Edwin Hugh; Fern Lucille, and Chester Leroy MAIDEN born in Marshall Co. or Tama Co. 1. [KEHR] Changes to Posts for Rootsweb Mailing Lists
    2. KEHR Listmembers..... You may have noticed on other Lists that Rootsweb has changed the way the SENDER of a Post is shown. The goal is to keep the Lists safer from hacking, spam receipt and other invasion related problems Lists have had in past months. The changes seem to pretty much be done, however its likely to be an ongoing process with new defenses coming and going. All your current and future Posts will be sent as you have always done with the eMail addresses you've always used. Receiving Posts has not changed. Just watch carefully when you construct a REPLY to make sure it goes to the right place.....the actual SENDER or the LIST. Since many of us have differing eMail software, the way the message headings are shown can be radically different from patron to patron. For now, the SENDER is still visible but not exactly as before. Rootsweb now shows several headings including Sender, Receiver and List Name but may show more items like Reply To and CC [carbon copy, means 'also sent to']. When you hit REPLY to send an answer to any Post you may have read, just watch to see what ADDRESS it is going to. It may be the actual SENDER who personally is getting your reply, or it may be the LIST itself that is getting your reply. BEFORE the changes, the SENDER was a PERSON...someone who Posted a message to a Rootsweb Mailing List. NOW, the SENDER is considered to be the LIST you are subscribed to. the robot computer that does all the sorting and sending to the various Lists and Message Boards is sending your post, it makes a big difference in how to keep toxic bits out of the Lists and out of Rootsweb in general. For the 16 Lists I Admin, a REPLY is set up to go to the entire LIST. It will stay that way........just watch to be sure a personal message isn't going to the whole List Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA/ List Admin for KEHR Send queries to ME here..... KEHR-admin@rootsweb.com Search Mailing Lists here ...... http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ You do NOT need to be subscribed to READ posts in any List, just to POST. 1. [KEHR] KEHRs in large picture....can you help with others ?
    2. In the past 3-4 days, I've been working with the Elkhart County Genealogical Society [Indiana] to ID people in a very large picture left to me. There are 133 faces in the shot which was likely taken around Elkhart and Koscuisco counties in Indiana between 1925 and 1930. Photographer's name is G. E. MILLER out of Nappanee, Indiana. The ECGS put this picture on their facebook page and some comments have already been left but so far, no ID. There are 2 residences in the photo but no house numbers are visible. Also there is a very large building to one side, like a school or large dormitory. Possibly that can be identified which would help with placement of this group. Looking for WHO, WHEN and WHERE for this group photo. Elkhart county has KEHRs so its a good place to hopefully get assistance. Only know 3 faces in this picture....Henry David KEHR [1870-1931] is my father's father's father. He is with his 2nd wife, Rosa STIFFLER [she's on HIS right], she had a daughter previous to her 1903 marriage to Henry in North Webster [Koscuisco county] named Beulah, she's on Rosa's right [HER right, not the viewer's right]. There may be more KEHRs in this large photo, but these may be other family lines, I simply do not know. This was inherited through Rosa Stiffler KEHR's only child of this marriage to Henry, a daughter named Rubedean KEHR [1905-1999]. Here is a link to the ECGS FACEBOOK page.... 1. [KEHR] DNA testing
    2. Listmembers - I am the List Admin, Meg [Kehr] Greenwood. Have just recently gotten results of a DNA test offered by Ancestry.com. By FAR, the highest expected links would be in Europe and they are. My father's KEHR lines are of German origin. The test results called this Central European [25% for me] and my mother's family was all from Scotland/Ireland, tests called this the British Isles [68% for me]. I was also wanting to learn more about a family rumor also on the KEHR side that we are of 'unknown' indian descent after the first ancestors [KIR] arrived. Switzerland has been mentioned in studies of the KEHR surname. Indian here means American Indian [tribal] ancestory. The genetic results did not indicate any possibility of that [0%]. What we did NOT expect is represented by 7% noted as "Finnish/Volga-Ural". The map they link to shows the ENTIRE area formerly called Russia with Finland attached as the area meant by this phrase. Would like to know if anyone on this KEHR List has also gotten their DNA results and did they also include this mystery area too ??? That could have a strong indication that the KEHR ancestory is not as "German" as we had thought. Or are these Russian genetic markers from WAY far back in the gene pool meaning the Germanic tribes came from that larger region ? Some Lists do not allow DNA discussions. Please feel free to discuss DNA results for this surname or German area links. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA ===========================================

    1. [KEHR] Dealing with SPAM at Rootsweb
    2. KEHR Listmembers - you've probably seen more spam hit the Mailing Lists at Rootsweb recently. They are formatted all pretty much the same and are all SPAM ! They all begin with a benign greeting like 'Hi !' Or 'Get a load of this !' and then a URL usually in blue as an active hyperlink. Not much if anything after that. If you READ the letters and symbols in the link, you can usually detect some words that are not normally included in PROPER eMails. DVD, TV, Cars, Watches, Condominiums, Free Money if you send shipping costs, plus more new avenues of making money hand over fist [you bet] are what is being offered, those words are occasionally viewable in the URL. Don't get sucked in....if you WANT to clik it, the spam has done its job !!! These are always deleted from the Archives of every Mailing List that is hit but it takes time. I am the Administrator of a few small surname Lists so the chances of having someone's eMail address book HIJACKED is very slim.....but its been happening at a faster rate in the past few days. BE ON THE WATCH for suspect eMails and DO NOT FORWARD THEM BACK TO ANY LIST evern if you are asking about it. DELETE it right away. Then you can ask the person who sent it if they really did send it. If you feel you MUST have some of the infected site in the eMail, PLEASE REMOVE PART OF THE URL. That makes it ineffective and it will not send anyone else who gets it to any website whether its legit or not. All of the Lists I 'own' are very small and I hope no subscribers are hijacked but we have to remain watchful, sometimes computers are shared and unsuspecting people see these and clik them. That puts you at risk of infection by malware too. Just DELETE it. DON'T GO to it. If it turns out to be legitimate and someone sent a REAL genealogical website in that format with no explanation, just the URL, they deserve being deleted. You can get the URL again from the List Archives if its OK. Use the Homepage for that Rootsweb Mailing List and select BROWSE to get all posts in date order. Just give it a few days to be REMOVED so you won't clik on the offending link. Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA / Admin of the KEHR List ================================================

    1. [KEHR] Recent ads, bugs & spam in Rootsweb Mailing Lists
    2. Spam is not a normal topic for any of the Mailing Lists however there seems to be a huge amoung showing up in many of the Lists lately as addresses are being harvested left and right from Subscriber's address books. I Administrate some Mailing Lists including this one. Please let me send a few words about what is getting through to hundreds of Lists lately. I am sending this to the Lists I have as so much has been getting through in the past 2-3 days however none has yet reached here. We are a small List, that's probably why we haven't yet been hit. Any eMail you get from Message Boards or Mailing Lists as well as personal mail that has a format described below is HIGHLY LIKELY to be infected. Delete it without clicking anything or your address book will probably be next. LOOK at the list of addresses its being sent to. Its haphazard and you are one of a dozen or more and you don't know any of the other addresses. There may be nothing in the Subject line. There is very little heading to explain what it is and I've never yet been addressed by my name, only by my address. Look at the WORDS it contains squished together in the URL they've sent. They'll be very suspect. None of this is of any use to Genealogists. Do not write back to the Sender unless you know them, their address book has been harvested and their computer is at risk, they'll be busy getting a new eMail address and clearing their machine of any other bugs it has picked up. Its advised to be OVERLY cautious with ANY eMail that looks so different and is not as you'd expect. Delete it. And DO NOT FORWARD IT and DO NOT RESEND BACK to any of the Lists. If you feel you must forward it, snip something from the URL of the spam address, thus making it incomplete and useless, thats been done below as an example, its the only way to safely forward/copy/ask about this kind of junk. Sample spam URL made ineffective..... http://big42inchlcdtvdeal.com/[snipped] Best is to DELETE anything that looks remotely like an ad.....if its made you even THINK of clikking on it to see what it is.....its spam and may invade your computer, that's what its supposed to do ! Please send any questions about spam/ads/bugs to me. Meg Kehr Greenwood / Admin for this and a few other Lists scotquester@bartnet.net

    1. [KEHR] Henry Kehr in Oklahoma City 1936
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. Henry KEHR and wife Mytle M KEHR were found listed in the 1936 phone directory for Oklahoma City, OK. Abbreviated occupation of 'fill sta' assures me he had some form of employment at a filling station. Does anyone know who this man was ? My KEHR line at this time is a Harry Hartman KEHR living in Tulsa [born 1893], he was my father's father. Harry's father was Henry David KEHR which is why this name in OKCity intrigues me. We know he was not a sibling of Harry's, but he might be from an earlier branch off the Tree. KEHR origins for our line were in and around Goshen, Indiana. I checked the SSDI, there are 10 hits for Henry KEHR and one is evidently him with a California origin. Henry KEHR Birth Date: 1 Aug 1902 Death Date: Mar 1984 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: California Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 73109 Localities: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma Ideas ???
