Thank you Leslie and Mary Ann for your decision to consolidate several of the mail lists. The recent proliferation of mail lists (Kaler, Koehler, Kaylor, Kohler, etc.) with various spellings of similar names is counterproductive. I was sorry to learn about the new Köhler mail list. Koehler is a direct and acceptable spelling of Köhler. The "oe" is the equivalent of the umlauted "o". In fact if you look in the online German telephone directory, a query for Köhler brings up Koehler spellings. Some may think that their family name has always been spelled a certain way. I use to think that, until research showed me otherwise. Of the eight major lines I am researching I cannot think of one surname that has appeared with only one spelling - Zimmerman & Zimmermann; Kühne/Kuehne/Keehne; and Delworth/Dilworth/Delury/Deloughery are just three examples. In the instance of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, George Kaylor, it is very likely that his family name was Köhler/Koehler. I started to think this after discovering there were no entries for Kaylor in the German online telephone directory, and only three Kayler listings. This is not to say someone should not create their own mail list(s). Supporters/sponsors of RootsWeb are entitled to do so. Just keep in mind, however, as you are researching a family name that other spellings and/or misspellings :) are not precluded. How else would I have found Hironimous Buchele in the 1860 Peoris census? He was listed as Hironymous Bechley. Thank God his first name jumped off the page! Otherwise I would never have found him, his wife and four sons.
