    3. Found this in an old email...it is from Fayette Co. WV Mailing list which was sent to me by another. This is the Dutch lineage of Kaylor. Somewhere I have more info on the Dutch. Believe that the town of Kaylor, PA is named after a Leonard Kaylor of Dutch lineage, but I need to verify that. Is that Armstrong Co. PA or Butler Co., forgot? 1. [KAYLOR-L] PA Biography
    2. Mary Ann Kaylor
    3. Here is a biography from a PA History, re Reuben R. Kaylor. Hope it helps someone. Mary Ann KAYLOR List Keeper HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND, ADAMS & YORK COUNTIES, PA - 1897 19th Congressional District - page 367: HON. REUBEN R. KAYLER, who has served for the last thirteen years as bookkeeper for the York Daily Publishing Company and now a member of the State Legislature from York County, is a son of JOHN B. and RACHEL (ROCKEY) KAYLER, and was born in Newberry Township, York County, PA, February 18, 1855. The KAYLERS are of Dutch descent and about 130 years ago a KAYLER and his wife came from Holland to near the site of Goldsboro, York County, where they were among the pioneer settlers of the neighborhood. Their oldest child was then six months of age and grew to manhood in his adopted county where he followed farming, fishing and shoemaking. He married BARBARA ZIMMERMAN, a daughter of NICHOLAS ZIMMERMAN, whose brother died in Holland and left a large estate which rightfully belonged to the Zimmermans of York County. To this marriage was born several children, one of which, JACOB KAYLER was the grandfather of the subject of this sketch. Jacob Kayler was a farmer and shoemaker, and married ESTHER BURGER by whom he had two sons and three daughters: Eliza, wife of JOHN C. RONEY, of Shiremanstown, Cumberland county; MARY wife of CYRUS REHER, of New Cumberland, this state; JOHN B.; NANCY, widow of HENRY PRETZ; and REUBEN, who died when young. John B. Kayler was born in Newberry Township, where he followed farming, and shoemaking and where he died in 1858. He wedded RACHEL ROCKEY. They had two children: REUBEN R., and HOWARD B., of Baltimore, Md. Reuben R. Kayler was not four years of age at the time of his father's death, and after being bound out for a short time was taken by his grandfather KAYLER, with whom he remained and worked on t he farm until he was 17 years of age. He then worked at milling for two years, learned the trade of cigar making and shoemaking and spent two years in a drug store at Mechanicsburg, this State, which he left on account of ill health. Returning to cigar making he found time to attend school and fit himself for teaching, which he followed for three years, and then in 1883, purchased a book store, at York, PA which was swept away in the June flood of 1884. Four months later, in October of the last year, he became bookkeeper for the York Daily Publishing Company which position he held until l1896, when he was elected to a seat in the State Legislature of Pennsylvania, and again resumed after the session. On August 14, 1879, Mr. Kayler married ANNA L. KAIN, a daughter of John and Susan KAIN, of West Manchester Township, York County. To their union have been born three children: MARY E., JOHN ROY, who died at the age of 6 months, and ROBERT EUGENE. Reuben R. Kayler is a member of the Union Lutheran church, and in politics has always been a Democrat. He has served as justice of the peace in West Manchester. ....................................... This biography goes on with the political, personal, etc. life of Reuben Kayler and is not productive in giving us any leads for research, so as it is lengthy, I decided to end it here.

    3. Thanks Tuila, that is a good research site for Indiana marriages, but mine didn't get to IN until after the 1850 census and before the 1860. These marriages end in 1850. Hopefully they will point others in that direction though. I will put some IN records on this list later today. 3. Thank you Leslie and Mary Ann for your decision to consolidate several of the mail lists. The recent proliferation of mail lists (Kaler, Koehler, Kaylor, Kohler, etc.) with various spellings of similar names is counterproductive. I was sorry to learn about the new Köhler mail list. Koehler is a direct and acceptable spelling of Köhler. The "oe" is the equivalent of the umlauted "o". In fact if you look in the online German telephone directory, a query for Köhler brings up Koehler spellings. Some may think that their family name has always been spelled a certain way. I use to think that, until research showed me otherwise. Of the eight major lines I am researching I cannot think of one surname that has appeared with only one spelling - Zimmerman & Zimmermann; Kühne/Kuehne/Keehne; and Delworth/Dilworth/Delury/Deloughery are just three examples. In the instance of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, George Kaylor, it is very likely that his family name was Köhler/Koehler. I started to think this after discovering there were no entries for Kaylor in the German online telephone directory, and only three Kayler listings. This is not to say someone should not create their own mail list(s). Supporters/sponsors of RootsWeb are entitled to do so. Just keep in mind, however, as you are researching a family name that other spellings and/or misspellings :) are not precluded. How else would I have found Hironimous Buchele in the 1860 Peoris census? He was listed as Hironymous Bechley. Thank God his first name jumped off the page! Otherwise I would never have found him, his wife and four sons.
