McHUGH, PHINNEY "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, November 24, 1911 HE KNEW IT WAS A FATAL STEP. T. S. McHUGH, a newspaper man of Olathe, Kas., called the telegraph editor of "The Star" by long distance telephone last night and said in excited tones: "Please telegraph Seattle right away to stop the suicide of William C. PHINNEY. Just got a telegram from him saying he was going to end it all at the Hotel Washington at 8 o'clock Friday night." McHUGH formerly lived in Seattle and knew PHINNEY, who was in the printing business, well. McHUGH read the following telegram sent him by PHINNEY: "There are three states that invariably overtake the average man. Two of them are death and taxes. And the third state I am prepared to meet at the Washington Hotel next Friday night at 8 o'clock. I want you to be present, I need your assistance. I cannot say that I am going to meet this particular fate with fear and trembling. But at the same time I want the personal backing, sympathy and support of every local friend I have ever had, of every royal hunter and princely fisherman with whom I have been in the woods or out on the water. For next Friday night will mark my farewell to Vagabondia and my departure from the land of Bohemia. And I insist upon you being there personally to help me as I pass away. Don't for- get Friday night at the Washington, at 8 o'clock. Business clothes. W. C. PHINNEY. Mr. McHUGH had to read it twice to be convinced that the telegram was really what it purported to be --- an invitation to Mr. PHINNEY's wedding. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ====================================================== Go to the Jackson County, Missouri Message Board to see births, deaths, and marriages in the Kansas City, MO & Kansas City, KS areas. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson When there: Do an "Advanced Search" and enter the surname (all lower case letters) on the "Find Messages Containing" line.
