    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, November 30, 1894 SHOT IN THE MOUTH. Phillip MATTHEWS, one of the Armour Packing company's butchers, was shot in the mouth by an unknown man at the west end of the Central avenue bridge early yesterday morning. He was intoxicated at the time and was unable to recognize his assailant. According to MATTHEWS' story, the assassin rose up in the darkness, said, "Now I will kill you, ___ ___ you," and fired. MATTHEWS ran back across the bridge and sought medical attention at Police station No. 2. Police Surgeon LUTZ found that the bullet had knocked out four of MATTHEWS' lower teeth and cut off part of the tongue. The ball lodged in the back of the man's neck. MATTHEWS' condition was pronounced serious and he was removed to St. Margaret's hospital. The butcher has a family at 21 South Eleventh street. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
