    3. During the Depression, many companies would not hire women if their husband had a job. My aunt was working for a large oil company in Oklahoma when she married and because her husband was working for a bank, the oil company told her they'd have to lay her off. They employed only single women. However, my grandmother was widowed during this time and the oil company relented because she lived with my aunt and was dependent upon her daughter's income. The company let my aunt continue working. Then WW II came along and my uncle, even though he was in his late 30's and he and my aunt had no children, was drafted and spent over two years in the Army, all overseas. My dad worked for the railroad and because many men were being laid off, he and my mother thought it'd be a good idea to have a small dairy for extra income in case he'd be put on the extra board or laid off. The railroad officers told my dad he could not continue working if the dairy was in his name as men couldn't hold two jobs. So they bought a few cows, put the business in my mother's name, bottled the milk, and we children delivered it to a dozen or so homes. Ironic is the fact that during this time, milk was being sold for six or seven cents per quart. The dairy business didn't last but about two years as most of the customers couldn't afford to pay their bills. Schools did not hire married women mainly because they felt they'd have to quit if they had children. I know of girls who were teachers and were secretly married but did not reveal it to the school officials. juanita > Back in Pennsylvania in the small town where I grew up, prior to about > 1950, woman school teachers were not allowed to be married.
