    1. [KANSASCITY] Alice D. & Zena KEIFE - Kansas City, MO - February 1904
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, February 8, 1904 A KANSAS CITY CHILD ACTRESS. "Baby" Zena KEIFE, the 6-year-old child actress, who is one of the two children alternating in the leading part in the "Fatal Wedding," which comes to the Gilliss theater next week, is a Kansas City child and formerly lived with her parents here. Her mother, Mrs. Alice D. KEIFE, who travels with her, was born and educated here. "Baby" Zena will be 7 years old this coming June. She has been a member of the company since it opened three years ago. She plays the part of "Jessie, the little mother," in "The Fatal Wedding." It is said to be the longest speaking part for a child since "Little Lord Fauntleroy" was dramatized. It is so long and tedious that two children alternate in the performances. "Baby" Zena will open at the Gilliss Sunday afternoon. In the evening, Cora QUINTEN, another precocious child, will play the part. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

John RUSSEL, a laborer, staggered into police headquarters yesterday afternoon and dropped into a chair in front of the captain's desk. He had been sick of pneumonia for a week and was so nearly exhausted that he could hardly stand. He said he had been at a lodging house near Third and Walnut streets for a week without medical attention and had risen from his sick bed to go in search of a physician. He is 21 years old and came here from the Soldiers' home at Leavenworth. Dr. GINSBERG, assistant police surgeon, examined him and sent a hurry order for an ambulance to carry him to the city hospital. The child goes in head first, gulps liquid and dies when parent panics holding them upright and screaming. Besides at this date there was no antibiotics to cure the resulting pneumonia. Bud. Yes today the parent might be charge with child neglect or abuse. Laws frequently do not use common sense.

Alex NARSHEL of 407 West Fifth street, a junk dealer, drove from Twenty-second street and Grand avenue into Gillham road yesterday. At Twenty-fourth street an officer arrested him. Judge KYLE fined him $3 in police court this morning for violating the boulevard ordinance. NARSHEL had put up a cash bond of $6.50. He was given an order for the money, less the fine. He demanded it all. When it was explained to him he started away. Then remembering the officer who arrested him, he returned. "How much do I owe you?" he asked. "Nothing." NARSHEL was happy. He thought he had to pay the officer for arresting him. "I guess I'm lucky," he said. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

    3. Apparently I missed an earlier story about a child being scalded in a tub of hot water with which to scrub the linoleum, but it wasn't unusual to have a tub of scalding water ready when butchering chickens. I remember my dad killing chickens and immediately dipping them into a nearby tub of scalding water to loosen the feathers. The tub of scalding water though was carried from the stove in the kitchen to the outdoors near the chicken pen. Some youngsters were scalded too by reaching up to a kettle of water boiling on the stove and pulling it off onto themselves. juanita > Sure like to know how all these mothers got water that hot, sitting on > the floor with which to scrub the linoleum..another copy cat crime? > > > In a message dated 12/20/2008 12:40:27 P.M.
