I live in Indiana now but was born and raised in KCMO. My family all resides at Mt Washington Cemetery now except for one brother. I've been searching to find out who my grandfather was. In 20 years I've not found one shred of evidence he ever existed other than my dad's birth which wasn't recorded. His name was Bert Mills who was from the Baxter Springs KS area. Bert supposedly worked for the gas company and laid the first gas lines into OK. Bert married Stella Carroll and my dad was born in 1908. I find dad starting school in KC in 1915. The Carroll's were railroaders. So, I'm searching for Mills and Carroll's in the KC area. My other grandfather was a German immigrant who died in 1909 in Iowa. With a very common name like Joseph Wagner I'm also unable to find him. He died before the big census in 1910 or I may have something. Just sad that I can take my grandmother's family to England in 1500's but can't tell anyone who my grandfathers were!! I have really enjoyed the list over the years. I send items to my brother occasionally who also enjoys reading about the history recorded here. I love reading John's newspaper clippings! My dad (Guy/Buster Mills) was a fireman in KC and when he retired in the late 70's he was the longest city employee KC had ever had. Ann, I did not find a reference to Betsie Fletcher King or Mrs. Sydney King. I did find the following that may be of interest: In a section that's called "They Served" the following person is listed: James KING Altar Society Officers are pictured including: Mrs. Watson FLETCHER Included with a list of girls who received their Brownie Troop 218 pin is: Maribelle FLETCHER. The article does not make it clear in what year this occurred. Marie, I think I found the father of Addie Loop and if so, her mother too. I went to the MO archives online to look at death certificates. I searched for LOOP in Daviess Co. and the first one I clicked on after I got that funny "you should try this one" feeling is this; _http://www.sos.mo.gov/TIF2PDFConsumer/DispPDF.aspx?fTiff=/archives/DeptofHeal th/Death/1914/1914_00004312.TIF&Fln=1832152.pdf_ (http://www.sos.mo.gov/TIF2PDFConsumer/DispPDF.aspx?fTiff=/archives/DeptofHealth/Death/1914/1914_00004312.T IF&Fln=1832152.pdf) Mrs. Addie Mallory of Altamont, MO is the informant on the above death certificate which is for William Henry H. Loop. Doesn't prove she is his daughter; could be a niece but most likely a relative in any case. He's 85 years old and married. Later that year (1914) Emily Loop dies; the informant on her certificate is Scott Mallory of Altamont. Two other Loops are children of William and Emily; another Loop does not appear to be theirs. Winfield's death certificate is there too, if you don't have his death date. There's none for Addie Mallory and I had no luck finding her in Daviess Co. by doing a search just for Addie. Looks like she moved out of the state or remarried and died in some county other than Daviess. Looks like a starting place! Vanette In a message dated 1/5/2009 7:43:49 A.M. > As we begin a new year, I thought it would be interesting to > know a little something about us members, ... My name is Steve Gillispie, and I live in Washington. My gggrandmother, Mary Finch Gillispie, was born in Carroll County, MO, in Oct 1859. The last record we have of her was from there in 1893. But then she disappeared. The family stories are that she died in a fire, but the people who knew the details didn't want to talk about it, so they have been lost. Her daughter, who was just a child at the time, wrote some notes in the 1920s that were only recently found in an old suitcase in a garage attic, that said an uncle took the train to Kansas City to go to her funeral. That daughter was raised by her grandmother, and spent many years trying to find out what happened to her mother. Through the subsequent years, each generation has tried and failed as well, and now it is my turn. The rumors are also that she had remarried, but nobody knows what her new name was, either. So I subscribe to this list hoping that someday one of her step-children's descendants will talk about her and our long mystery will finally be solved. --- Steve Gillispie <gillisp@earthlink.net>

Hello! My name is Teresa Pearce Dugan. I now live in Columbus, Ohio, but lived as a child in Kansas City, Mo area, Freeman/Harrisonville, Mo area and in the Shawnee Mission Kansas area. As an adult, I lived in Kansas City, Mo until about 25 years ago. My great, great grandmother, Sophia Henke Pearce moved to Kansas City, Missouri sometime between 1900 and 1910, from Madison County, Illinois. She had divorced her husband, Joseph Pleasant Pearce. They had two children, Grace Pearce, who married Courtlandt Hilsdon and my great grandfather Clarence Stanley Pearce, who married Mary Nettie Cooper. My great grandfather Clarence was a hatter and owned a shop on East 9th St. It has been said that Sophia moved here because she had cousins who lived in KC, but I have never been able to locate them. My great grandmother Mary Nettie Cooper was born in Marys Home, Missouri. She moved to Kansas City, Kansas when she was 11 yrs old to keep house for her father, Lilburn Cooper. I have not been able to find out much about Lilburn, except that one of his parents, most likely his mother, was Cherokee Indian. He was most likely born in Pulaski County, Missouri. Mary Nettie's mother had passed away several years before hand and she had been living her her maternal grandparents, Fred and Katie Groose. Mary Nettie and Clarence Stanley had six children, one of which was my grandfather, Courtlandt Pleasant Pearce. He married Henrietta Hardman. She was born in Kansas City, the youngest of three children. She had two brothers, James Ross and Lawrence Hardman. Henrietta's father was Henry Hardman. He owned a moving company until the Depression. He married Cynthia Cecil Loop, who was from Green City, Missouri. She had many brothers and sisters, as did my great grandfather Hardman who lived at different times in Kansas City. He was born in Parsons, Kansas. My great great grandfather, James E Hardman died in Kansas City in 1906 from pleurisy. He did own and run a boarding home/hotel at one time. :My father, Courtlandt Pearce Jr was born in Kansas City, Mo. He met my mother Margaret Clarice Farmer in Kansas City. She was at a school called Weaver's School for Airline Stewardess and Ticket Agents, I believe for TWA. They later married. She passed away in Dec. 1969. I did not grow up with much family knowledge and those who could answer any questions were lost to me or had passed away. John helped me find most of the information listed. I am always interested in family history and enjoy reading all of the postings on this list. I am always looking information about the following surnames: Pearce, Henke, Loop, Hardman. I also research my brother in law's family, Sweeten, Soverns, Bickell, Porter, Fall. I am also interested in finding out about the Weaver School. My mother died when I was 10 years old and I would like to know more about her life in Kansas City while in school. Again, her name was Margaret Clarice Farmer, who was called Peggy. She was from Indianapolis, Indiana. So, now I have written a book....if for some reason I have any information that someone would like, I will be glad to share this information. Thanks again to John, for all of his help! I also enjoy these items. Especially when there is added items like Vivian's. My LEE families were heavily involved in both armies. The BAKER's were burned out in Bates county and went to Kansas.. Remember there were several sets of"order # 11" . The Book History of Jackson County has several accounts of the various Battles and atrocities. BUD> -----Original Message-----
Hi John, My name is Carol Lee (Boles) Rollins I was born in KC, Mo, but grew up in KC,Ks, the Rosedale area. I now live in Olathe, Ks My father was Ralph Frank Boles,b in Ks; his father Frank McAnnaly Boles,b in Ks; his father, Charles Boles b in Il. Charles's siblings have been my headache. I have somewhat identified 2 brother & 2 sisters from old letters. I have his mother and fathers names from his obit. Charles was a Methodist minister during the time period of 1845 till his death in 1902. He served the Shawnee 's at the Shawnee Indian Mission, the Delaware Indian Mission and then the Kickapoo's. He also preached in many of the early Methodist Church's in both Johnson & Wyandotte Co, Ks. He lived in the Jo Co Ks area and raised his families there. I have been able to trace the families. My brother did the DNA for me but to no luck as of yet. Charles's father was born in Pa in about 1784 and his mother in Tn. His parents both settled in McDonald Co Mo about 1832. Thanks for all your help and great information you send. As we begin a new year, I thought it would be interesting to know a little something about us members, and maybe even help each other, so I'm requesting that you respond to this note with the following: Your location - city and state .......... or just state How you are connected to Kansas City, MO or Kansas City, KS What you hope to gain by being a member of the KC Mailing List Your family name - first, first & last, or none. =================================================== Perhaps someone on the List will be able to provide you with information. This will be more probably if you include dates and names in your response. For example, saying "my grandfather lived in KC" will not get much of a response but saying "my grandfather, John O'Brien, lived in Kansas City in the 1920s" might produce a result. It's up to you how specific you want to be. There is, of course, no requirement that you participate. However, simply responding: "I live in California and lived in Kansas City, KS in the 1950s" would be acceptable. Thank you for your consideration.
