My guess is that when the mesa formed by the Liberty Memorial begins to slope downhill towards the south and sort of west, it runs into Penna. Avenue-see map- Washington, Jefferson, Pennsylvania streets are over there..I think it is just another bluff area where they the city fathers thought it would be a good name. And I can just see a tired looking old Indian sitting half nude on his horse in winter in KC, can't you?? I am thinking of the right statue, aren't I???? In a message dated 1/13/2009 7:10:57 A.M. Looking for persons who may have known or are relatives of Virgil TOOMBS, I believe he is buried in a cemetery call Woodlawn/land in Ks.Contemporary burial circa late 1950's Two wives , Son by first marriage Donald TOOMBS, a sister or two. I have to go unpile this clutter to restore their names. Do have some photos, I will share and hope someone can tell me more. Also looking for any one who knew Donald , I think Tattersrall, and that is a guess at the last name, there maybe a d and there should be divorce papers in the 1920's probably. dwsbgs@centurytel.net -----Original Message-----
Hi JoLynne, Thanks for responding. I don't think that there is a connection, at least not that I'm aware of. My grandfather, Ralph BARNES, was born in 1907 in either Oklahoma or Arkansas (records differ) but lived most of his life in KCMO. He died there in 1959. His father's name was Robert. Robert was born in Missouri in 1859 (not sure where) and died in White Hall, IL in 1913. I have only been able to find that Ralph had two BARNES sisters but had other half siblings with different last names (great-grams married 6 times!). My father was Ralph's only son, that I know of. If you find any connection, please let me know. Researching this line has been a challenge! Thanks, Cheryl BARNES Salvi In a message dated 1/6/2009 6:22:49 P.M. Kansas Marriage Index search 1854-1861 http://www.kshs.org/genealogists/vital/marriages.htm
Kate, you have a fantastic idea, it'll be a tribute to your grandmother, and I'm sure many people will enjoy reading her notes, even if they are not connected to the subject person. About what time period does it cover? Perhaps as a first step you can post an index of names and respond to inquires. I'd suggest that you post the name index on the Wyandotte County Message Board where people not on the Mailing List are likely to search. (When you post to the Message Board it'll automatically go to the Mailing List too.) Might be a good idea to also post the index on the Jackson County Message Board. I look forward to your postings. Frank, If John H. is a son of Daniel, it would help explain why his son Henry named a son Daniel. The elder Daniel's connection to New York, when my John may have been born there, seems encouraging too. But oh, my, how to prove it! Vanette
Alice (Mack) Turner was born in 1907 and lived in KCK until about 1958/59 when she and my grandfather, Jesse Orville "J.O." Turner, retired and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1958/59. My parents Beverly (Turner) Klamm was born in KCK in 1935. I want to say it was in the Armourdale District, but I'll have to check that for sure. My dad, Richard "Dick" Klamm, was born in KCK in 1932. He and mom moved to Holdrege, Nebraska about the same year as Alice and J.O. moved to Missouri. The Klamms in the KC area are pretty much all my relation in some way. Don, married to Betty, was my dad's brother. Edna Mae (Klamm) Cannavan, married to Bob Cannavan, is my dad's sister. The Klamms lived in Bethel. Grandma Bessie Elizabeth (Storey) Klamm lived to be 103. She died in 2002. Grandpa George Lewis Klamm died in 1987. They were both born in 1899. I haven't met many of my Klamm relatives other than my direct line as my dad's family didn't seem to socialize much with the other branches for some reason. The Turners came from Columbia, Missouri, to KCK when J.O's father died in 1918. His widowed mother, Malinda (Barnhart) Turner married Forest Bedford Bass in 1921. Let's see. You might know the Hunts. Grandma Alice's sister, Eva, married Donald Hunt. They had a handful of kids including Charles and Pat. I'm sure there were others, but I can only think of their names right now. Another Mack sister, Maggie, was married to a man named Ambrose Beck. They had two daughters named Dorothy and Ida. Alice's brother, George Mack, married a Catherine Hardy and later a woman named Ann (I can't remember her last name right now.) The oldest sister, Mae Mack, never married. Somewhere, I have a photograph from the Kansas School for the Blind. It shows a group of children and I believe their names are written on the back. Great Aunt Mae worked there as a teacher. I even have a letter from a parent thanking her for taking care of their child. I also have a photograph of group of women telephone operators at the switchboard. I think most of them are named in the photo. Alice and Eva both worked there. Bellsouth, I think. The Mack family lived for many years at 313 Walker St. Alice's father, Henry Mack (shortened from McNamara) worked at the Westside Foundry. There are other names of neighbors I remember off the top of my head. Alice McCauley was the midwife who birthed Grandma Alice, which is why she is named Alice. I believe her husband's name was John and two sons, Robert and Samuel. There was a woman who lived next door they called "Granny Noble. I think her name was Mary. She had two sons. I'll have to look up their names. The Conley sisters - Lyda, Lena and Ida were Wyandot Indian neighbors and Grandma's Sunday School teachers. Other neighbors were Maude and, uh, Joseph (I think) Pitts and their two sons (whose names escape me at this moment.) Grandma's best friend was Rosie Kalish. There are a bunch more names, but that's all I can think of right now. I'll dig through the storage boxes and see what else I can come up with. ~kate > > In a message dated 1/11/2009 3:04:32 P.M. Isaac? 1854? This is interesting! It may be coincidence but I have a hunch . . . My Margaret lived in the "City of Wheeling" on the 1850 census. I believe she was a widow (for the second time) but can't be certain. Here's the data and my additional finding: 1850 Federal Census, City of Wheeling 1st Ward, 44th District, Ohio County, Virginia, 24 September, B. F. Killey, page 185; (M432 Roll 966 Page 93 Image 37) 39 1343 1394 Margret Farnsworth 46 F Pa Malissa do 8 F Ohio Rebecca do 6 F " Jesse Lambert 18 M Chair Maker " Continued on M432 Roll 966 Page 93 Image 37; Page 186 1 John Lambert 15 M Laborer Ohio Isaac Farnsworth age 50 born NY and family are in Richietown "a suburb of Wheeling" in the same district; household 868, page 123. Could this be your Isaac? The LAMBERTs are her sons from her first marriage to Jesse LAMBERT. Her second husband was John H. FARNSWORTH, probably born about 1800; in NY according to the census of daughter Mattie; or in CT from census of son Henry (both from 1880). If John was alive in 1850, I haven't been able to find him. Margaret is shown as a widow in 1880, which was the first census where the question was asked. I have a family letter dated August 13, 1854 that states Margaret and her children were living at "Rockiland" (I assume Iowa) and that her son-in-law, John KING, had died in July 1854. It was written by Margaret's brother Preston ROBERTS in Pee Dee, Cedar County, Iowa to their sister Martha in Ohio. Preston went to Iowa about 1852. The date 1854 in your post made me take notice! Perhaps John H. and your Isaac were connected in some manner and Margaret took her children west with Isaac after John's death and instead of going to Liberty, went to Iowa to join her brother. Perhaps John was scouting the territory during the 1850 census and went back for her, or her and Isaac, died along the way back west also . . . lots of possibilities. My John might have even been in the California gold rush for all I know. Another item: My Martha's (Margaret's sister) second marriage was to Thomas McCONN in 1862. He lived in Wheeling at the time, and in 1870 they are on the census at Claysville Post Office, Donegal Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which is very close to Wheeling. Obviously there was more than one tie to the Wheeling area. Do you see any possibilities? Vanette In a message dated 1/11/2009 4:23:31 P.M. Vanette, The John FARNSWORTH that you mention as 2nd husband of Margaret sounds like one of the brothers of my gg-grandfather Isaac. Isaac was the son of Daniel FARNSWORTH and he had four older brothers. I need to do some more checking but here is a little information from my notes: "Daniel Farnsworth is listed in the 1830 census for Lewis Co., Virginia, on page 238. His age is given as 60-70. In the same household is listed one female age 50-60. On the same census page are listed Nathaniel Farnsworth, James Farnsworth and Isaac Farnsworth. Daniel is on p. 763 of the Farnsworth Memorial II, by R. Glen Nye. The Memorial notes that Daniel once owned "a considerable portion of the lower half of Staten Island and also considerable land immediately opposite in Middlesex, NJ." in 1821, Daniel moved to Buckhannon, Upshur Co., WVA accompanied by his five sons: James Stout Farnsworth, Thomas, Nathaniel, John and Isaac. (Source of info--Georgia Farnsworth Martin, 31 Mar 2001.)" Frank
Hey, John, I have in my possession several notebooks, papers and photographs belonging to my grandmother who grew up in KCK. I've been kicking around compiling all this into a book of some sort, but it dawned on me after this recent flurry of emails on the Kansas City, Wyandotte County and Jackson County lists that members may have family members metioned in these papers. As I get time, I'll try to post names and other relevant information in hopes that it will help somebody. If nothing else, it'll give a verbal snapshot (and in some cases, an actual one) of life in KCK during Grandma Alice's life. ~kate
Frank, I have some FARNSWORTHs, though no Emma. Maybe we connect? Henry Clay FARNSWORTH died in Topeka October 03, 1917. His mother, Margaret ROBERTS LAMBERT FARNSWORTH died in KC MO 18 September 1892, location 711 May. She lived in KCK at 404 Freeman in 1891. Margaret's sister Martha is my great-great grandmother. I would like to know where Margaret is buried. Margaret's daughter Martha "Mattie" FARNSWORTH SHAW Shaw (widow of Henry L. SHAW) died in Jackson Co., MO in 1907 at age 66. She was also at 404 Freeman, KCK, in 1891. Henry's children are: William Leonard James Henry Elmer E. Frankie (male) Jesse John Daniel Oren Mary Anne Della Mae Harvey Berton The earliest ones were born in Iowa, middle ones in KS and the youngest two in Iowa. Several ended up in Nebraska. Vanette
Here is an interesting site to look through regarding Kansas records. I haven't look at everything yet, but I think you'll find information about old birth, death, and marriage records plus other information regarding genealogy researching. http://www.kshs.org/genealogists/index.htm John
Vanette, Thanks for responding, but I could not find a Henry Clay FARNSWORTH among my FARNSWORTHs. The seven siblings of Emma V. are Rachel Elizabeth (b. abt 1830-d.18 Apr 1915, m. Joseph MOONEY); Julia Ann (b 21 Sep 1831-d. 26 Sep 1919, m. Thomas CROOKS); Granville (b. 5 Apr 1837-d. 15 Jul 1925, m. Lavinia BUTCHART); Louisa Jane (b. 2 Oct 1840-d. 1 Nov 1926, m. 1. R. HENDRICKS, then 2. Henry Clay TURNHAM), James P. (b. 4 Nov 1844-d. 18 Dec 1927), Amanda (b. 1851-d. ?), and Isaac N. (b. 1852-d. ?). My FARNSWORTHS came to Liberty, MO, from Wheeling, VA, in 1854. The father, my gg-grandfather Isaac, is reported to have died enroute to Liberty and was buried somewhere on the bank of the Missouri River. I'll keep an eye out for Margaret in my searching. Thanks again, Frank
Frank, I'm sorry ....... I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe someone on the List knows????? I did find marriage licenses published in the newspaper for the 1870s. I don't recall seeing anything before 1870 ......... actually, I haven't look at many newspapers older than about 1880 ............ they are difficult to read because of the size of the type and in many cases the image is blurry.
