    1. [KansasCity] Benjamin JOHNSON
    2. John O'Brien
    3. Reba, I printed November 1916 today and Benjamin Harrison JOHNSON is not listed in "Deaths in Kansas City" that were printed in "The Kansas City Times." Reason? ... He may have had a separate article about his death. He may have been in the "death/funeral notice" section of the paper. He may not have had his obit published in the "Times." He may have had his obit published in one of the other Kansas City papers. He may not have had his obit published in any Kansas City, MO paper. He may have had his obit published in a Kansas City, KS paper. Sorry I couldn't help. If you get a death date, I'll do a search. John Kansas City, MO PS. I pulled copies dated up through Nov 30. If he died Nov 29 or Nov 30 his obit could be in the December paper. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Reba" <reeebie@midwest.net> To: <KansasCity-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 15, 2003 3:14 PM Subject: Re: [KansasCity] KC area obits > November 1916 Benjamin Harrison Johnson. 2. John: For me my priorities 5,4,3,1,2. I was born and raised in KC and my NICHOLS & KELLER family lines had input in the public sector, (but I yet have been unable to find where for sure) and my WEBB line was busy building apartments and other structures in KC. The time reference for me would be late 1870s into the 1900s. 3. John, Answer to your survey: 1,2,4,5,3 Have you did any 1904 deaths? Of family interest, MURLEY, Daniel died February 1904. They lived on Missouri side and also in Rosedale, Wyandotte Co. KS. Unsure where in 1904. Love all your postings. Have many lines in both KC cities. Shirley Weber Centralia, Washington

    1. Re: [KansasCity] Survey of your interest
    2. Thanks, John - your tireless efforts have helped a lot of people, certainly me. I agree with others - this is certainly the most active and interesting "list" to which I subscribe! That said, I would vote for your offerings in just the way you offered them - 1,2,3,4,5, with my interest in #2 to be 1880 and later. Do you know why some obits do not show in the KC Times, when they have appeared in the STAR? You ran your April 1922 list from the times, but it did not include Virginia (Jennie) Bowdon O'BRIEN who died 19 Apr. 1922 (death cert. conf.) - I do have an obit from The Star. Could this be a matter of timing of death? or personal opinion of survivors re the paper? or, I am open to any other suggestions! The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Times were basically the same newspaper--The Times being the morning edition and the Star the evening edition. Perhaps the obit didn't make the deadline for the Times, but was there in time for the Star. Sometimes the obit appeared in both or possibly the next day's Times. Hope this answers your question. John, please add or correct any of this information. Anita in Mo > Do you know why some obits do not show in the KC > Times, when they have appeared > in the STAR? 1. Re: [KansasCity] Survey of your interest
    2. My interest: 4-5-1-2-3 Also interested in court notices (chancery, probate, criminal, divorce, &c) In my case, I think I have worked out all the 1-2 items; there is a birth notice from about 1920 I should look for, and there are a few lost sheep whose death might have occurred in KC 1910-1930. However, I think recording this info in the mailing list archives will be a huge benefit to future researchers. Ordinarily marriage info would also be good, but there are good KC records available from the county (if only these were indexed on-line). What really would benefit me are any scraps of info that might explain what family members were doing in KC, 1880-1920. They were grain dealers, US government workers, a banker, a bar owner, a traveling salesman (the Helm families), and one character who might have been a farmer and/or a building contractor (Will Van Matre). 1. [KansasCity] Re: Lists of attorneys
    2. reeebie@midwest.net writes: > Is it possible there might be a list of practicing attorneys in KS circa > 1891-1930 or so. You have helped me before. Katherine (also known as Kitty) I can't help with specifics, nor do I know anything about this particular region; but I have looked into this kind of problem in other regions. Attorneys have to be admitted to practice before the bar. This usually means they appear before a court officer like a judge, swear an oath, and so the whole process should appear in court records. Perhaps these records would be in a state court, like a circuit court, or the state's version of supreme court (highest/last court of appeals) like in California. Now I have to say I spent a lot of time looking at about 30 years (1818-1855) of court records in Ohio and never saw one there; and while I didn't know anything about attorney records at that time, I was also actively looking for mentions of certain attorneys. However this search did not cover all the courts, especially not the higher state courts.

That birth and death may show up. Whether those events were in KC or St. Louis, I don't know. The family was in St. Louis at the 1900 Census - Agnes, the mother of 2, with only one living.
