    1. [KansasCity] John W. O'BRIEN d. 25 July 1908 - Los Angeles, CA
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Monday, July 27, 1908 TOSS OF A COIN SENDS HIM TO HIS DEATH Los Angeles, July 27. -- The toss of a dime sent John W. O'BRIEN, Shakespearian student, mining expert and globe trotter to a suicide's death Saturday in an apartment house on Grand avenue. O'BRIEN was well known in St. Louis and Chicago, having visited both cities frequently. Goaded to the deed by financial reverses and possibly by a suicide pact, which was hinted at in letters from a friend found among his possessions, O'BRIEN seated himself in front of a large mirror and fired a bullet through his heart. On the floor by his side was found a dime, lying "tails" up, and on the table a note saying he would flip a coin to determine whether he should kill himself or not. Among his possessions was found a volume of Shakespeare's works, besides numerous note books and newspaper clippings concerning the writings of the English author. Many of the passages were marked. The letters which hinted at the suicide pact were from G. W. LANGFORD, an official of the Philippine Fishing company in the, Philippine islands. In one of these, dated March 25, 1908, LANGFORD advised O'BRIEN against getting married, saying that "such entanglements would bring grief and sorrow to dear ones when the time came for them to fulfil their pledge to each other, unless fortune soon smiled upon them." Many letters in the same vein were found. ================================================= (I have no connection with this person but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) 1. [KansasCity] Frank WELSHONS - Richmond, KS - 1908
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Tuesday, July 28, 1908 WANTED THE CITY MADSTONE Richmond, Kas., Farmer and His Family Had Been Bitten By a Dog Frank WELSHONS, a farmer from Richmond, Kas., yesterday made application to the local police to be allowed the use of the city "mad- stone," which he desired to use on himself and several children, three of whom were with him, whom he feared to have been inoculated with rabies as a result of their being scratched and nipped by a family dog which died in agony last Sunday. He was referred to the Pacific hotel, where the only stone of this particular character in this section is said to be possessed by an aged woman. "Two weeks ago, while I was playing with my dog he suddenly bit me on one of my toes," said the farmer. "I thought nothing of it at the time, but later, after all of my children had been scratched on the arms and legs, and the animal died after showing unmistakable signs of what I took to be rabies, I determined to seek the only remedy in which I have faith." Neither WELSHONS nor his children showed any outward signs of being ill, and the police are of the opinion that he is more frightened than injured. DEATH IN PET DOG'S BITE New York, July 27. -- Hydrophobia, the result of a dog bite, regarded at the time as insignificant, caused the death today in the Presbyterian hospital of James E. PHILIPS, formerly a lieutenant of police. While PHILIPS was playing with his pet dog, last October, the animal bit him slightly on the cheek. ================================================= (I have no connection with this person but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================

    2. John O'Brien
    3. Eleanor, I checked three Kansas City newspapers ("Times", "Star", and "Journal") and could not find an obit for EVANS. Since he died in Clay County, I also checked the "Liberty Tribune" (a Clay County paper) but could not find him there either. I haven't been able to find out what newspapers obituaries for people who lived in Clay County were printed. I know some where in the "Liberty Tribune" but I think there were other local papers but they're not on microfilm. I've looked at many obituaries in the Kansas City newspapers and I've never seen an obit for a Clay County person that died in the 1800's or early 1900's. (Today Clay County people are in the KC papers ...... I'm not sure when it started but I'd guess in the 1930's. I'd suggest that you post a request for an obit lookup on the Clay County Missouri Message Board. Maybe someone on the Board will be able to help or give you a suggestion. 3. Kenneth It only costs $10.00 for a 5 year search at MO Dept of Vitals. Why not spend $30.00 and expand the search from 1945 to 1965, in 5 year increments starting with 1955 to 1960, then 1945 to 1950 and if necessary from 1960 to 1965??????? Does your elderly relative, or any of your other relatives, know what prison Claude was in??? Or why he was in prison??? You might want to ask around and see what you can turn up. You might also want to visit the Missouri Department of Corrections web page and get the address for the Public Information Officer (take the link to the Directors page). Send him a request to see what if any records may be available, and who the designated caretaker for the department records is, re the Missouri Sunshine law. If the MO Dept of Vitals can't find a death record, then contact the Corrections Public Information Officer. If that fails, you may want to use the Missouri Sunshine law to get at the Department of Corrections records. Dept of Corrections... www.corrections.state.mo.us MO Attorney General's page , for Sunshine Law info www.ago.state.mo.us/sunintro.htm Finding the death notice and cemetery with out a date is unlikely, as this information does not appear to be indexed anywhere. I would anticipate the Claude is buried in a Potters Field near the prison he died in, given that relatives did not claim the remains and he likely had no resources to pay for a funeral. 1. [KansasCity] OBIT - Mrs. Martha (LIVINGSTON) BINGHAM Jan 24 1824 - Sept 20 1890
    2. Dave Goldy
    3. Sherry from "The Kansas City STAR", Saturday, September 20, 1890, Vol. 11, No. 3, page 2, column 2 Mrs. Martha BINGHAM Dead One of the Oldest Residents of the City - The Funeral Services Mrs. Martha A. BINGHAM, one of the oldest residents of the city, died at 7 o'clock this morning at the Washington hotel. She was in her 67th year, having been born in Shelbyville, Ky., January 24, 1824. Mrs. BINGHAM on Tuesday underwent an operation for removal of a tumor. The operation was successfully performed and she was progressing favorably on her way to recovery, when an old stomach disorder, said to be hereditary, manifested itself and she became unable to administer her food and died from want of nutrition. Mrs. BINGHAM was a lineal descendant of Philip LIVINGSTON, on of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a second cousin to General Stonewall JACKSON. She was married in October, 1851 to the late Dr. Johnson LYKINS of this city. At the time of her marriage Miss LIVINGSTON lived at Lexington, Lafayette county. She came to Kansas City with her husband and has since lived here. Dr. LYKINS died August 15, 1876, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Mrs. LYKINS was married in 1878 to General George C. BINGHAM, one of the most noted portrait and landscape painters in the South and West. General BINGHAM had also been adjutant general of the state. He died in 1879. Mrs. BINGHAM left no children of her own. Her stepson, Captain Rollins BINGHAM, survives her. The funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Unitarian church on Tenth, between Broadway and Washington. Interment will be made in Union cemetery. There is a biographical sketch of her in "The History of Jackson County, Missouri, ....." Johnson County Kansas Central resource Library, Call number "977.841 History 1881", on page 741. It does state that her parents died when she was three years old, and that she was raised by her grandmother. It also has the marriage dates to both of her husbands. Let me know if you would like a photocopy of it. And in "Vital Historical Records of Jackson County Missouri, 1826-1876", by the Kansas City Chapter of the DAR, 1933 - 1934...there is an index of burials on Union Cemetery BINGHAM, George C. (Captain) b. Mar. 20, 1811 d. July 7, 1879 (footnoted as famous painter) BINGHAM, Henry W. b. 1847 d. Nov 8, 1868 BINGHAM, Mattie L. b. 1824 d. 1890 ( I think this is Martha, based on the dates, and the fact that the above mentioned biography is for a "Mrs. Mattie L BINGHAM") LYKINS, Dr. b Apr 15, 1800 d. 1. Re: [KansasCity] County Home
    2. Joan, Thank you so much for your reply. I am looking for census records for my aunt, Bertha Elizabeth Hines (insane) and my Grandmother, Nettie Mae Hines. Also health records if they are available to the public. Bertha E. Hines was a residence in the Wyandotte County Home I think maybe about the year of 1927 and died in the facility 18 April 1964. She spent some years in Osawatomie because of her health, but her last years were spent in the County Home. However, she was moved to another facility some years before she passed away. Could the reason be that the Wyandotte County Home had closed? If so, where was the new residence? She is not buried in Wyandotte County. My Grandmother, Nettie Mae Hines (my family too poor to care for her) was a residence of the home from about the late 40's and died there, 13 November 1954. She was not buried in Wyandotte County. I also visited my relatives at the County Home many times. I am so grateful to you for helping me fill in some blanks of my beloved Grandmother and Aunt. If there are any fees for your search, please inform me and I would be more than happy to send the amount requested. Sincerley, Ruby Hines Trent ~ Goleta, California

    3. Who are you looking for in particular and what time frame. Our society (Wyandotte County Genealogy Society) has a copy of the cemetery records near the old county home. Also the census lists the individuals who were there. We worked very closely with the Department at the Annex and transcribed all available records. I went to the home every Saturday for over a year with Marie Calvin and we visited the residents. Her mother was a resident. We also visited the residents in their new facilities after they moved. Let us know in specific and we will try to help you. Joan President of the Wy Co Gene Soc (jd@toto.net).
