"The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Saturday, August 19, 1899 COULDN'T SLEEP TO RAG TIME. Mrs. J. W. HINDMAN lives at 2800 Michigan avenue. Her husband is a carpenter. She has an organ. Elmer GILLMAN lives next door. He is a Missouri Pacific check clerk and works at night. If he sleeps at all, he must sleep in the day time. Mrs. HINDMAN sleeps at night, and if she plays her organ at all, she must play it in the day time. Having an organ, she must play it. But Mr. GILLMAN says it disturbs him to sleep to rag time. It may readily be seen that this must be very wearing on Mr. GILLMAN's nerves. One morning this week, Mrs. HINDMAN says, she was playing one of her favorite tunes in "scrap iron" time, when a stone came through the window and wounded the organ, besides tearing a hole in the screen. Several other stones hit the side of the house. Mrs. HINDMAN, looking from a porthole on the rockward side, was able to make out Mr. GILLMAN, dressed as if he had arisen hastily. Mr. HINDMAN was there, too. The HINDMANs had the GILLMANs arrested. The case was tried yesterday and all the stones thrown were in evidence. Mrs. HINDMAN says she picked them up in her parlor. Justice ROSS took the case under advisement. He might, in justice to both sides, hear Mrs. HINDMAN play an exhibition piece before he decides it. ================================================= (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================
Chris, have you seen the following posting on the FELCH message board? "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, November 30, 1894 A CHILD'S HORRIBLE FATE Little Maud FELCH, the 7-year-old daughter of Walter FELCH of 654 Ferree street, was burned to death Wednesday night. Maud and her grown sister, Ida, were the only ones at home at the time. Maud was sweeping the kitchen floor and her clothes caught fire from the stove. Her sister endeavored to put out the flames, but was unsuccessful and finally ran for help. At this time Mr. FELCH arrived and found his child burnt to a crisp, with only the shreds of an undergarment remaining. He threw the poor little one on a bed and extinguished the flames. The child died an hour later. Coroner STEVENS viewed the body yesterday, but did not think an inquest necessary. The funeral will take place today. Mr. FELCH is a day watchman at Reid Bros.' Packing house. He is a widower. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Mott" <minimotts@grrtech.com> To: <KansasCity-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 12:14 AM Subject: [KansasCity] FELCH > I am looking for information on Walter C. Back in January, a person on the List mentioned her experience with how slow the Mid-Continent Library - Independence is in getting donated genealogy books on the shelves. See the note below from the Genealogy Librarian regarding this issue. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Schultz, Genealogy Librarian" <ge_librarian@mcpl.lib.mo.us> To: <JohnOBrien@kc.rr.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 2:27 PM Subject: Mid-Continent Library Dear John, Thank you for sharing the comment about Mid-Continent Library with VG as found on the Jackson County Rootsweb list. We appreciate your fine support. Could you please forward the following to the Jackson County list? In the last two years Mid-Continent Library has made a great effort in getting books, both donated and purchased, onto the shelves in a timely manner. This was not always true in the past, but currently hardback books are on the shelves within a month. Books which need to go to the bindery will usually take three months. We appreciate donations from individuals and organizations. You may view our holdings by using our library catalog at www.mcpl.lib.mo.us. DORAN, FINCH, LANGSDALE, ORR "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Saturday, August 19, 1899 A LITTLE BOY'S FAITHFUL DOG. Little George ORR, 12 years old, was drowned in his grandmother's well about 2 o'clock this afternoon while his dog stood over the water and barked with all his strength for help. The boy lived at 2345 Terrace street. His parents were away from home and his grandmother sent him to the well for a pail of water. The well is covered with a dry goods box having a lid in the center. George lifted the lid and let down a tin pail. He filled the pail, but in trying to lift it, lost his balance and fell into about ten feet of water. His dog, which had followed him out, immediately jumped on the well box and barked and howled furiously for help. The boy's grandmother, alarmed at the dog's behavior, ran and looked into the water. There she saw the boy plunging about. She called the neighbors, but the boy was dead before they could get him out. Undertaker J. C. Duffy was sent for the body. "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Sunday, August 20, 1899 COULD NOT SAVE HIS MASTER. The body of George ORR, the 12-year-old boy who fell in a cistern and was drowned yesterday afternoon, as "The Star" told in its later edition, was taken to Duffy's undertaking rooms and will probably be buried Monday. George ORR was the son of T. B. ORR, a car repairer, 2345 Terrace street. His parents were away from home and his grandmother sent him to the cistern to draw a pail of water. He lost his balance and fell in, and his dog, which had followed him, jumped on the box over the cistern and barked furiously for help. The grandmother ran out and, guessing what the matter was, ran to the neighbors for help. James DORAN and J. A. FINCH put a ladder down the cistern and hauled the boy out. But he had already drowned. Dr. LANGSDALE, deputy coroner, investigated the case. ================================================= (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================
"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, June 2, 1899 IS ARRESTED BY A WOMAN Much surprise was occasioned at police headquarters last night when Mrs. (Elizabeth) FAULKNER, the energetic little matron, walked into the station followed by a big strapping fellow whom she had taken into custody and marched to the lockup all by herself. The man's name is Edward JESSUP and the charge placed against him on the police blotter was that of the non-support of his family. Yesterday, Mrs. JESSUP, with her two little children, applied to Chief McFARLAND for assistance and they were turned over to Mrs. FAULKNER, the matron, who administered to their wants. Upon hearing the woman's story, Mrs. FAULKNER determined to search out JESSUP and see what was the cause of his neglect of his family. She called at the place where the family had been living and found JESSUP in the act of moving away the household furniture. Not only did the brave little matron make him desist, but she made him go with her to the police station, a distance of more than a dozen blocks, and there filed a complaint against him. JESSUP was locked up and on the prison ledger the name of Mrs. FAULKNER appears as the arresting officer, the first instance in the history of Kansas City, Kan., where a woman actually made an arrest. ================================================= (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================
"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, February 3, 1913 BOY LEFT HOSPITAL IN "NIGHTY" Clad in a thin nightgown, a pair of house slippers which were much too large for him, and a cap, Jimmie LOVEALL, 10 years old, a patient at the Mercy Hospital, left that institution at 7 o'clock last night. Early yesterday morning, Martin EFT, 15 years old, a ward of the juvenile court, who was sent to the hospital Friday for medical aid, escaped. When a nurse went to the room of little Jimmie LOVEALL on the second floor at 8 o'clock last night, she didn't find the boy. His clothing was in its usual place, but no Jimmie to be seen. The window was open. She looked out and just beside the window ran a telephone ground wire which would hold Jimmie's seventy-five pounds. Then she saw tracks of the big house slippers in the snow near where the wire entered the ground. Jimmie LOVEALL lives with his mother at 6612 East Sixteenth Street and Martin EFT's home is at 129 South Oakley Street. Both boys went home. ================================================= (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================
