PALMER, WALLACE, WALLS "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Friday, June 2, 1899 GETS A LEGAL WHIPPING Justice WALLS pronounced a new and original sentence in his court yesterday, and a boy, 10 years old, was soundly thrashed instead of being given a jail sentence. The change in punishment was made at the instance of the mother of the boy. Clarence WALLACE went buggy riding last Sunday in a buggy belonging to A. A. PALMER, without the owner's consent or knowledge and was arrested for it. He appeared before Justice WALLS yesterday morning. He was unquestionably guilty and the justice was considering whether to give him fifteen or twenty-five days in the county jail, when the boy's mother spoke up and said: "Judge, if you will let him go this time, I'll give him a good thrashing." "I'll let him off on condition that you whip him right here," said the justice. The woman consented and the erring son, the mother, the justice and the two constables retired into the back room. A stout rawhide was procured and while one of the constables held the boy the mother gave him a few choice cuts which made him use his lungs with great effort. The justice stopped the chastisement when he thought that the law had been satisfied. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these people but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ======================================================

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Wednesday, January 1, 1913 TRAIN KILLS FOUR KANSANS. Belleville, Kas., Dec. 31.-- Part of a little girl's head with a bit of blue baby ribbon tied to the hair was found by the engineer of Rock Island passenger train No. 5 when he oiled the engine here tonight. Investiga- tion developed the fact that the engine had struck a buggy at a grade crossing two miles north of here at 6:30 o'clock tonight killing Wilson JAMES, his wife and two children. The mother, a 2-month-old baby and a 3-year-old girl were killed instantly. The father was breathing when picked up, but died a short time afterward. Engineer LAIRD said he did not know when the engine struck the buggy. Part of the buggy top was wedged to the pilot when the train reached here. At the arrival of the train here, the headlight was not burning. Two boys, 8 and 13 years old, are the only surviving members of the JAMES family. ================================================= (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) =================================================
