    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Tuesday, February 4, 1913 A SAW TAKES OFF TWO FINGERS. A circle saw in the shop in the rear of his home, on the northeast corner of Spring Street and Grand Avenue, sawed through two fingers on the right hand of William J. REINTJES, president of the Kansas City Construction Company, yesterday morning. A foreman for the company telephoned he needed extra laths. There was no one in the shop. The president of the company, who has retired from active work, had nearly finished sawing the laths. As he reached for the last one, the saw teeth buzzed through his fingers. 1. [KansasCity] DELETION FROM LIST
    2. Dr. Kenneth L. Goldsberry
    3. Maureen our ListMom..... and gang.... KC-L is a fantastic place to learn a little history of the area.. and I appreciate the efforts of so many people that "work" the Libraries, Courthouses etc.... I have contacted some people individually, rather than keep "repeating the needs" on KC-L. We have a few possible leads as to where the records of the old Carroll Undertaking Company (Funeral Home in the 1950's) might be located... or the potters cemetery location of 1899. But nothing positive to date. Remember, my Ggrandfather, George Goldsberry had been in the hospital where he was held for pneumonia and died of a massive heart attack on 22 Apr 1899 while walking on Fourth St. near Wyandotte and Delaware shortly after he was released. He had a prescription in his pocket with his name on it and that was the only identification. The newspaper stories (three of them) indicated he was a "homeless wanderer and a familiar character about the north end saloons for years" He had left his family (wife and 11 children) around 1892 and his daughter in Galena, KS saw the newspaper story and rushed to KC....but burial had already taken place. Upon talking to the coroner, police and hospital personnel regarding physical conditions of the deceased George Goldsberry, everyone was convinced that it was her father. If any new KC-L members might have a suggestion or two....or John or some of the other "faithful" stumble on to something... please retain my e-mail address and contact me directly . Thanks again... and good luck...

    1. [KansasCity] Elmer BIGGS & Fred WHEELER - killed 1 Sept 1922 - Kansas City, KS
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Friday, September 1, 1922 MURDERS FOLLOW KIDNAPPING BY SEVEN BANDITS Victims Shot Down in Gun Battle After Dairy Driver and Son are Robbed and Beaten in Holdup. Gangsters Open Fire on Officers After Robbing Tire Store Two Kansas City, Kas., policemen were murdered by bandits shortly after 3 o'clock this morning. They were Sergeant Elmer BIGGS, 61 years old, 20 years on the department, and Patrolman Fred WHEELER, 35 years old, BIGGS' partner on the night patrol. The murder of the two policemen occurred at Ninth street and Ruby drive, and followed the kidnapping of two men by the bandits. While BIGGS was killed instantly, shot through the mouth and head, WHEELER lived long enough to whisper a disconnected story of what occurred. WHEELER was shot through the stomach, shoulder, right breast and the calf of the leg. His revolver, every chamber fired, lay beside him when he was found. BIGGS clutched his weapon, from which five shots had been fired. BIGGS was married, the father of two grown sons and two daughters. He had been on the police department 20 years. He lived at 1330 Yecker avenue. WHEELER, who had been on the police department only four months, lived with his mother, Mrs. Auguste WHEELER, 1030 Ridge avenue. NOTE: the above are excerpts from a long article about the murder. It includes pictures of both policemen. Contact me direct if you want more details. 1. [KansasCity] Sarah JOHNSON BALES b. 6 April 1808 - d. 12 May 1893 - Kansas City, MO

    3. (This one is very interesting!) "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Saturday, May 13, 1893 MRS. SARAH BALES DEAD. One of the Pioneers of Jackson County Departs From Earth. Mrs. Sarah BALES, the oldest inhabitant of Kansas City or Jackson county, died at her residence, corner of Twelfth street and Porter road, yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Her death was due to old age. She was 85 years old, having been born April 6, 1808, and has lived in Kansas City for sixty-eight years. Mrs. BALES had been very feeble for several years and her death was not unexpected. Three years ago she met with an accident which rendered her practically helpless. Mrs. BALES is the mother of five sons and one daughter, all of whom are living. Three sons and the daughter reside in Kansas City. The sons here, William, S. H., and J. E. BALES, and the daughter is Miss Mary E. BALES. John BALES and Walter BALES reside in Belton, Mo. Her husband, Judge Walter BALES, died July 8, 1887. October 10, 1825, Mrs. BALES, then Miss Sarah JOHNSON, arrived with her father's family on the site of the future Kansas City. They came from Cole county, Mo., where Mr. JOHNSON had previously removed from Tennessee. With Mr. JOHNSON came his three married sons. In all there were twenty-one persons in the party. The land had that year been opened for settlement and the JOHNSONs took claims. This land is now within Kansas City and embraces some of the finest residence portions of the city. It includes all that land bounded by Independence avenue, Seventeenth street, Virginia avenue and Porter road. The country was wild and Indians were quite thick in this neighborhood. The elder JOHNSON put up a house where is now the corner of Bernard avenue and Fourteenth street. The house was built of round logs, which was about the only building the undeveloped country then afforded, and was 20X25 feet in dimensions. The floor was made by splitting straight trees into boards about two or three inches thick. There were no nails used in the construction of the building and wooden pegs took their place. The inside was all one room, and in this for some time the twenty-one persons of the JOHNSON colony made their home. At the time the family came here, Miss JOHNSON was 17 years old, and was among the first white settlers of the county. West of Independence there were perhaps a half dozen hunters and trappers. Kansas City soon afterwards sprang into existence, and among the first settlers was Judge Walter BALES who came here from Tennessee in 1831. On June 3, 1832, he and Miss Sarah JOHNSON were married. Both spent their lives in Kansas City and within a mile of the first house built by Mrs. BALES' father in Kansas City. The original BALES farm contained 175 acres, which extended from Ninth to Seventeenth and from Bellefontaine avenue to Porter road, and now embraces five or six well known additions. A division of this property was made prior to Judge BALES' death, he preferring to administer upon his own estate. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the residence, 3600 East Twelfth street, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Mr. MEYERS, of Bales Avenue Christian church, will officiate. The burial will be in Elmwood. The pallbearers are C. M. DOWNING, William HARRIS, William CAMPBELL, J. T. HOLMES, Benjamin HOLMES, I. E. JACKSON, R. O. STEELE and John EATON. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this person but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) ======================================================
