    1. Re: [KansasCity] 1910 Wards/EDs
    2. Jay McCray
    3. Mike, The streets in Kansas City are numbered 1st Street (and sometimes another block called Terrace) thru 399th Street south from the Missouri River. For example, 51 Street, then 51st Terrace, then 52nd Street, then 52nd Terrace. Therefore 37th Street is roughly 37 blocks south of the river. Main Street and other named streets run south from the river, generally parallel to the state line between Missouri & Kansas. Houses are numbered east and west of Main Street. In general the 1st block west of main, the houses are numbered 1 W. up to xx W. The second block may be numbered 200 up to 299, etc. Blocks east of Main are mirror images -- 2 East 37th would be across the street, then 200 East 37th starts on the next block east. Houses near main are constantly getting their neighbor's mail at the wrong house. Even numbers are on the north side of the numbered streets and the west side of the named streets. For example, your relatives house is most likely on the corner of 37th & Main Street. This is at the edge of the mid-town as we generally call downtown from the river to about 31st Street. Back in 1910, the city limits ran to about 47th street, so this was in the 'burbs. Nice neighborhood back then. 3. Mike: John D. & Elizabeth are listed in Enumeration Dist. 57, House 7/Fam 11, sheet 1, Kaw Twsp, 4th Ward. John D was 26, Elizabeth was 25, they were on the first marriage, married 5 years, no children, and yes, they were at 2 West 37th St. Living with them was Helen C. Oldham, Elizabeth's 64 yr old mother, who had had 2 marriages, had only 1 child (Elizabeth), Helen was born in MO, but her parents were both born in KY. Let me know if you need anything else from this entry. 1. [KansasCity] A Church Incident
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Monday, August 21, 1882 A CHURCH INCIDENT. The thoughts of church goers, while in sanctuaries, are not always on religious subjects. Yesterday morning the organist of the Walnut Street M. E. church, was making the organ fairly roar. Suddenly he changed its tone, and instead of the loud, roaring sound, there were soft, sweet tones, which are so pleasing to the ear. Just after the change had been made, a lady of the congregation, in a voice that could be heard throughout the greater part of the room, exclaimed to a woman seated beside her: "We fry ou'rn in butter." The two had evidently been discussing subjects connected with the kitchen, and owing to the organ's roar, had been talking loudly.
