Jesse is my gggrandfather. He married Mary Lafollett in 1829, Guernsey Co., Ohio, and later Anna Elliot in 1843 in Morgan Co., Ohio. I believe Jesse and family migrated to Adams County, Iowa about 1860. I believe that Jacob Cale, born abt. 1800, is Jesse's brother. Several Cale families are found living right next to each other in the 1850 and 1860 Ohio census: Jacob Cale, Jesse Cale, Henry Cale, Cornelius Kail, William Cale and Margaret Cale, all in Buffalo Township. I would appreciate any information or research leads for Jesse Cale. 3. Hi Pat and the Rest, This opens up a whole new area for me with KAIL in UK. Is there any possibility yours were German or Swiss? Have you ever thought of the possibility that they could have come from the German Palatinate in the 1709 exodus to England via Holland. Some stayed in England, others went to Ireland, the American Colonies, South America and elsewhere. Some were also returned to Holland due to religious affiliations. I've also heard tales of the English "sea captain" Cales. Maybe a connection there. I have collected a lot of info on people with the variant names that I know about in Germany, France and the US. My immigrant (to the US) ancestor was Philip Jacob KÖHL, born 1803 in Sankt Johann am Saar, now part of Saarbrüken, Saarland, Germany. He changed the name to CALE when he got to the US, but I find records about him with the name spelled CELE, KOEHL, COLE, KAHLE, KEHLE, as well as CALE. He was literate so who knows why the different spellings. What was your mother's name? Were there any variant spellings in her line? 3. Hello Listers, My mother's maiden name was Kail and I have "found" Kail(e)s in Dorset back to the early 18thC , but am interested in whether or not there are any to be discovered in Somerset at an earlier date. There is mention of the name in the Chard Manor in 13th/14thC, but whether or not there is a connection with the Dorset Kail(e)s, I do not yet know. Anyone know? Pat from Sussex.UK
