    1. Henry JOSLIN
    2. JOSLIN researchers, I found this letter on the RI list and since it mentioned Henry JOSLIN I'm posting it to the list. Hope that's OK Norma Subject: RE: [RIGENWEB-L] Re:RI to NY Migration Resent-Date: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 23:47:54 -0700 (PDT) Resent-From: RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 22:42:54 -0800 From: "cscox" <cscox@alaska.net> I'm glad that the subject of a Rhode Island to New York migration has been raised, because I too, have ancestors who followed this route. I've been researching the rather obscure Larkham family of Richmond, Rhode Island and Voluntown, Connecticut. Among the old documents I have on this family, is a letter from Thomas Larkham of Petersburg, Rensselaer County, New York, dated 1799, giving power of attorney to his brother, Lot Larkham (my gggg-grandfather) of Voluntown, CT. I was surprised to learn that there was a whole branch of the Larkham family in Upstate New York, and I was curious about what led them there. Thomas Larkham married Sarah Crandall (daughter of John Crandall and Kezia Shaw) in Voluntown, CT (at least their marriage is recorded in the Barbour Collection, Town of Voluntown). Their marriage was officiated by Henry Joslin, who was a pastor of the First General Baptist Church of Richmond. In the Vital Record of Rhode Island by Arnold (volume 10 or 11, pp. 387-388), a brief history is given about the First General Baptist Church of Richmond, and I found this especially interesting: "...the [First General Baptist ] church called Henry Joslin to take the watch-care of them June 7, 1788, and was ordained their pastor 14th of August following. Next we find a branch of the Richmond Church located at Amsterdam, in New York State. Next we find that there had existed for some time, a branch of this church at Broadalbin, in the state of New York, and, as many of the Richmond Church members had moved to that section, they earnestly solicited Elder Joslin to come and settle with them. Accordingly, on the 8th of March, 1806, Elder Joslin requested liberty of the Church to remove there, which was granted him." Many of my Rhode Island ancestors were Seventh Day Baptists. Not knowing anything about them, I did a web search and found the following site, called Seventh Day Baptists in America: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~sdbbris/books/new/sdbusa.htm Among the text was the following: "Before the organization of the Conference, settlements had been extended to New London, Conn. where a church was organized in 1784; to the Little Hoosic Valley, in Rensselaer County, New York, where a church was organized in 1780, which took the name of Hoosic, later Petersburg..." It isn't clear to me whether people from Rhode Island and Connecticut migrated to Rensselaer County and vicinity for economic reasons and the clergy followed, or whether the migration was for religious purposes. Whatever the motivation, the migration must have been fairly significant. I would love to learn more about this topic. Is there anyone on the list more knowledgeable about this migration? 1. JOSLIN Society
    2. I thought others on this list might be interested in the following, from David JOSLIN: The Joslin Family Society has been set up basically to link Joslins (and derivatives) all over the world. A newsletter is published quite frequently and the annual sub is very nominal - £8 for us and, I suppose, round $15 for you, each year. There are two branches of Joslins here in the UK. There is my West Country branch and the other is across the country. Though I haven't yet been able to prove it I am pretty certain that the link lies before 1066 in Normandy, France. I have traced my branch back to the late 1600's but the other lot go way back farther! The secretary of the Society is Mrs. Ann Thompson, 15 Warmson Close, Saxonfield, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs.,ST3.5RD. UK. She isn't on the web. Or you could e-mail Peter Joslin at 100625.3707compuserve.com He has encylcopedic records of Joslins and is most helpful. Drop me a line anytime. David

Samuel and Isaac children of second wife Christiana Garrison. So far I have seen references to names of 5 children for Samuel, 2 for Isaac & 1 child each for the older brothers. I guess Isaac had seven sons so there are five names I have not seen. If anyone has additional names for children of William or names of grandchildren I would like to hear from you. 3. David, I am trying to locate information on a Nancy JOCELYN or JOSLIN (it is spelled a couple of ways) who married a Watson LEWIS and lived in Ohio and Indiana in the 1820's to 1850's. It is said (family tradition - really old genealogy materials from an ancestor 100 years ago) that Nancy and Watson married in CT - but Watson was in Albany, NY at the time I would expect them to be married. I found a Jared C. JOCELYN in the 1850 Census - New Albany Co. IN and believe he may be a brother. Both Nancy and Jared had sons with the names of Addison (either first or middle name). Could this possibly tie into your Jonathan JOSLIN b. 1818 OH and d. March 1851? Do you have any further info on them? Sure do appreciate any leads! Thanks - Dev Cook

    3. Hi, I am trying to figure out my Joslin lineage and was hoping that someone may be able to give me more information on the descendants of William Joslin. Here is what I have been given: I have William Joslin b. 1701 in NY as son of Thomas Joslin and Mary Vaughn. William married Mary ? They had sons Thomas b. 1735, Isaac b. 1759 and John. I have also been sent the following census information: The 1793 New Jersey census has the following Joslins David, Isaac, Israel, Jacob, John, Jonathan, and William. Also were Josling, Jacob, John and John. My ancestor is Isaac Joslin b.c. 1815 in PA or NJ. I have four suspected brothers for him: Riley Joslin, b. c. 1795 PA Josiah Joslin, b. 1799 NJ William Joslin, b. c. 1802 NJ Jonathan Joslin, b. c. 1818 OH d. abt. March 1851. 3. Below is information I have on five Joslins whom I believe to be brothers. Riley and William were neighbors in Knox Co OH in 1830 while Josiah was listed in the same township. William and Josiah filed land patents on the same day in 1834 in Shelby Co IN about 2 years after Isaac was married there. Isaac & Josiah were neighbors in the 1870 Andrew Co MO census. Sounds like family to me. I have numbered the five suspected brothers according to age. 1. Re: Riley Joslin, b. c. 1795 1850 Federal Census of Nodaway Co. Jonathan 32 OH I believe Josiah had son William as well who is not listed here. (Jonathan is Josiah Sr.'s brother, by the way, which you'll see later.) The Mortality Schedule collected with the 1850 census (giving deaths during the last 12 months) gives these deaths. Eli Joslin, died May 1850; Mrs. Rhody Joslin, died May 1850, age 22; and John K. Joslin, died Aug 1850. I believe strongly that Eli is a son of Josiah, know that John K. is the son of Josiah, and feel certain that Rhoda is the wife of Jonathan. Andrew Co Will dated 4 Feb 1851, filed 8 Mar 1851 for Jonathan Joslin. Leaves brother Josiah appointed executor of Will and guardian of his infant daughter, Margaret Mary Elvira Rody Joslin. [I don't know where this baby was in the 1850 census-- farmed out with somebody, no doubt, as her mother Rhoda was already dead, and apparently her father, Jonathan, going fast.] 3.
