    1. Abraham JOSLIN 1619
    2. Marilyn and list, I've been on vacation and just got around to checking the JOSLIN info. I don't have much on the JOSLIN family but thought I'd send this along in case you or others don't have a copy. As you can see it came from another researcher. From: UTZ <UTZ@AOL.COM> NORTHEAST-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU Probably more than you wanted, but here's what I have: 1. Abraham JOCELYN, born 1619 in London, ENG; died 9-Jul-1670 at sea. He was the son of 2. Thomas JOCELYN and 3. Rebecca MARLOWE. He married (1) Beatrice HAMPSON 1646 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA. She was the daughter of Philip HAMPSON and Anne ?. Notes for Abraham JOCELYN: Had an assignment of land in Hingham in 1647. Found in the Middlesex County Court files: 1690:Whereas Abraham Joslyn dyed not long since at sea of from ye Coast of Virginia, in ye ship ye Good Fame of New York, but before his decease made a will the which hath beene approved by ye oath of Two persons who are witness thereunto, wherein he diposeth of his estate in Nashawage & [unreadable] in his Majesties Colony of the Massachusetts, unto his wife & children whose presence may certifye all whom it doth concerne, that ye said will having beene proved as aforesaid remaines upon Record with ye rest of ye wills and Testaments of such as doe happen to dye within this the Province of his Royale Highness. New York, 17 April, 1670. The following is an abstract of his will on file in the Surrogate's office, in the city of New York: Abraham Jossling, Nashua, "Being very sick" leaves to wife one house in Nashaway, with land thereto belonging. To eldest son Abraham, "one farm that Goodman Kittle lives on." "And good wife I would not have you remane where you are with any of my children, but my desire is that my children may be put out to Trades where they are." Leaves to son Henry 20 shillings, "and I desire him to be kind to his brothers, and to take one of them to himselfe to learne his trade, as he hath promised me." Dated March 16, 1699. Witnesses, Christopher Spencer, Thomas Spicer. Notes for Beatrice HAMPSON: New England Marriages Prior to 1700 say her 2nd husband was Benjamin Bosworth. [Abstracts] Page 65 Betterece Joslen of Nashaway, wife of Abraham Joslen, and Abraham Junr son of said Abraham & Betterece, to Edward Tyng, of Boston, all our right to lands expressed in a deed beareing date July 2, 1663. To have and to hold. April 29, 1670. In presence of John Watkins. Children of Abraham JOCELYN and Beatrice HAMPSON are: i. Abraham Jocelyn, born Abt. 8-Apr-1649 in Hingham, MA; died 15-Feb-1674/75 in Lancaster, MA; married Ann Hudson 29-Dec-1672 in Lancaster, MA. Notes for Abraham Jocelyn: Early in the morning of the 10th of February, 1675/6, Lancaster was surprised by a large number of Indians, who made their attack in five disctinct bodies and as many places, burning the houses in their way, and destroying the people found inside them. Some of the inhabitants, to the number of forty-two, being mostly women and children, among whom were Abraham Josselyn and his family, took shelter in the fortified house of Rev. Joseph Rowlandson. This they defended upwards of two hours, during which time several of them were killed by the bullets showered upon them. At length the house was set on fire, and the people within were reduced to the sad necessity of either perishing in the flames or resigning themselves to the savages. In their attempts to escape, all the men, save one, were slain; many of the women and children perished on the spot; and the rest, about twenty in number, were seized by the Indians and carried into captivity. Thus perished Abraham Josselyn, as we are assured by Mr. Harrington. Mrs. Rowlandson, who was one of the captives, met Mrs. Josselyn, about the 23rd of February, in the hands of the Indians, at a place called Wenimesset, now New Braintree. She found her in great distress having in her arms her little daughter, Beatrice, then nearly two years old. In the course of her captivity, Mrs. Rowlandson heard that this unfortunate woman and her child were stripped by the Indians, knocked upon the head, and cast into a fire, where they miserably perished. Some captive children, who were present, declared to Mrs. Rowlandson, that Mrs. Joslin shed not a tear, but continued in prayer till death put an end to her suffering.

    1. Re: Charlemagne --?--> Sir Gilbert
    2. Dennis J. Cunniff
    3. Gillian, Here is my impression of the current state of knowledge regarding the origins of the Joslin family. I am sure others will disagree with it, but I think it is a fair assessment - and I hope it will serve to advance knowledge rather than spark controversy. The reference that most people take the Joslin line from is: French, Elizabeth, "Genealogical Research in England: (Joslin Family)," New England Genealogical and Historical Society Register, vol. 71, 1917, pp. 236-257. and Ms. French does end the line at Sir Gilbert Joslin, whom she maintains was father of both Geoffrey Joslin (who married NN. de Bisset) and St. Gilbert of Semperingham. There is, however, a problem with this generation, and although various people have tried to extend it, none seem to have proven any further generations. The main problem is that at this point in time there were no established 'surnames' and genealogists are left scrambling to identify people on the basis of other identifiers. Josselyn was most likely a given name that became a surname, and Josselin / Gozelin etc. seems to have been a fairly common given name. First: the problem with "Sir Gilbert": The "Sir Gilbert" identified by Ms. French was a Domesday tenant of Gilbert of Gaunt, and was said to have held the lordships of Semperingham and Tyrrington [later scholarship suggests he was a Domesday tenant of Alfred of Lincoln rather than of Gilbert of Gaunt]. But this man, who WAS father of St. Gilbert of Semperingham, does not seem to have had any sons named Geoffrey.... Furthermore, Gozelin, Domesday tenant of Alfred of Lincoln, still holding in 1115/18, was father of Gilbert de Sempringham, Roger, and a daughter Agnes by an English wife, according to the Vita of his son St Gilbert. (The book of St Gilbert, edited and translated by R. Foreville and G. Keir, Oxford, 1987, p. 10). His heir by 1166 was his daughter Agnes, mother of Roger and Hugh Musteil. (Lindsey Survey, BL ms Cotton Claudius C v, fols 19-27; i, fol. 358d; i, fol. 358d; i, fol. 358d; i, fol. 358c; i, fol. 358a; i, fol. 358a; i, fol. 358a; i, fol. 358a). I know nothing about St. Gilbert of Semperingham that suggests he had a brother Geoffrey: the fact that his brother Roger, who was the lay founder of Alvingham priory and benefactor of Sempringham, left no heir except his sister Agnes, suggests there was no Geoffrey in this family. Several 'Josceline/Gozelin/etc.' tenants can be found in Keats-Rohan, K.S.B., Domesday People: A Prosopography of Persons Occurring in English Documents 1066-1166: I. Domesday Book, The Boydell Press, Woodbridge, 1999. Of these, the most likely candidate as a 'Joslin' ancestor would seem to be (on p. 236-237): Gozelin Filius Lanberti, Tenant-in-chief in Domesday Lincolnshire who held in 1086 lands previously held by his father Lambert. Probably a Norman. His son Gilbert had succeeded as lord of Redbourne by 1115/18 (Sanders, 74). (i, fol. 350d; i, fol. 350b; i, fol. 344a; Lincolnshire Claims (Domesday Book), fols 376b-c; Lincolnshire Claims (Domesday Book), fols 375d-376a; i, fol. 359a; Lincolnshire Claims (Domesday Book), fols 376b-c; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359c; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359c; i, fol. 355b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359a; Lincolnshire Claims (Domesday Book), fols 375d-376a; Lincolnshire Claims (Domesday Book), fols 375a-d; i, fol. 359c; i. fol. 359b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359c; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359c; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359b; i, fol. 359a; i, fol. 359b) There was also (on p. 288) Lanbert, a Norman, who occurs Domesday Lincolnshire as tenant of Jocelyn fitz Lambert, to whom he was perhaps related. Perhaps the same as Lambert tenant of Odo of Bayeux. Obviously, if the relationship of Geoffrey and "Sir Gilbert" is in question, so are any lines that extend this relationship back further. Nonetheless, there have been various attempts, but so far as I can see no proven lines. According to Lodge, Peerage of Ireland, vol. 3, p. 259 (revised edition of 1789), Sir Gilbert Jocelyne was son of Egidius Josselin, a nobleman of Brittany, who crossed into England in the reign of Edward the Confessor, about 1045. The son, Sir Gilbert, born apparently in England, went in to Normandy and returned to England with the Conqueror. Evidence to prove these statements seems to be lacking. The best known attempt to extend the line, however, was made in : Wessler, Edith S., The Jocelyn-Joslin-Joslyn-Josselyn Family, Salem, Massachusetts, 1962. (reprinted by Higginson Books) Ms. Wessler maintained that Gilbert Josceline was a son of Lambert II, Count of Lorraine and Brabant and Gerberga. This identification, however, is far from certain. Ms. Wessler did not document the identification, she merely asserted it: no source is given, and it seems as though the identification may have been made merely on the basis of similarity of names. This Gilbert Josceline is said to have been the father of the Gilbert who was father of St. Gilbert of Semperingham and Geoffrey, through whom the Joslin line is then traced. Ms. Wessler says that Lambert, who married Gerberga, was the son of Lambert I, 'or Josceline d'Albou': but the Lambert who married Gerberga von Niederlothringen (whom Ms. Wessler labels Lambert II but who is also known as Lambert I) was the son of Reginar III, Graf von Hennegau and Adela von Dachsburg. Gerberga actually did marry Lambert I "the Bearded" of Louvain. They did have a son, Lambert II, Count of Louvain. He married Oda, dau of Gozelon I, Count of Verdun, Duke of Lower Lorraine, who died. 19 Apr. 1044. I suppose that Lambert II might have inherited through Gozelon's daughter Oda, but I see no reason he would have been referred to as Count Josceline on that basis, and have no information that he: [1] was ever in England, or [2] had a son Geoffrey. Ms. Wessler included several 'legendary' descents - descents from antiquity - in her book, including such ancestors as Aesyetes born about 1264 B.C. and thus hurt her credibility, I think, as no one today could reasonably credit such a descent. Her daughter is said to be working on a revision of her book (which is actually quite dependable regarding the Joslins in the New World), but I don't know if there is further evidence about the European Joslins to be included. It is clearly time that the earliest generations in Ms. French's article are reassessed (and perhaps, if carefully examined, the difficulties extend even further in that work), and it is also clear that Ms. Wessler's assertions about the ancestors of these generations also need reassessment. I do not know if anyone has undertaken this. At present, I know of no documented Joslin descent from Charlemagne. The other common bit of 'folklore' that seems to have crept into Joslin genealogy is the name of the immigrant, Thomas Joslin's wife Rebecca. Everyone seems to assert that her maiden name was Marlowe, but no one can ever cite evidence for it. Can anyone show me the preceding line, which supposedly connects to Gerberga of Lorraine, Duchess of Brabant, (975-1017) dau. of Charles (the Twin), Duke of Lower Lorraine and Brabant (953-992) and Bonne, Countess of Ardennes? 1. The Falcon JOSLIN House in Fairbanks, Alaska
    2. The following may be of interest to anyone related to Falcon JOSLIN. I am not related to him, as far as I know, and don't have any additional information. From: "Fairbanks: A City Historical Building Survey" dated November 1978 Falcon Joslin was an entrepreneur who came to Fairbanks from Dawson in 1904. He had owned a railroad there, and he used his expertise to promote the building of the Tanana Valley Railroad from Chena and Fairbanks to the Chatanika mining districts in 1905-1907. Later he was vice-president of the Washington-Alaska Bank before it was taken over by E.T. Barnette. Throughout his life he vigorously promoted the development of Alaska's resources. The article goes on to describe the house which was one of the first frame homes in Fairbanks (as opposed to log cabins). Falcon Joslin and his family also lived in Seattle, WA. I'll be happy to send a copy of the article to anyone interested if they will send an SASE. Laura Noland ljnoland@aol.com
