I am looking for additional info, suggestions or cousins to share my info with. According to info from various sources which I believe all originate with Edith Wessler's book, I have the following: 1.Thomas Joslin b 1658 in Scarborough, Maine, he married Mary Vaughn 12/21/1881 in Rhode Island. Apprenticed to his brother Henry to learn to be a smith. Lived in Little Compton and Kingston, RI. 2.Their oldest son Thomas was born 1684 in Newport, RI and married Mary. He was a Freeman in South Kingston in 1722. Thomas and Mary had 3 children: Mary married John Lillibridge Freelove married William Gardinar in 1737 Thomas (3) married Mary -- which I believe is the following family recorded in Cumberland, R.I. Records of Birth, Book 1, page 21. The Children of Thomas (3) Joslen and Mary his wife married 1734 Abraham Joslen their first born Son Born Feb 9th, 1736 William Joslen born January 21 in the year 1738 Ruth Joslen their first daughter born Jan 23rd 1740 Abiger Joslen their second daughter born August 13, 1743 ** (4)Thomas Joslen their third son born Jan 27th 1746 Mary Joslen their third daughter born May 5, 1748 Phebe Joslen their forth daughter born August 30, 1750 Abigail Joslen their fifth daughter born September 7th 1751 Recorded Dec 2nd 1752 John Dexter Town Clerk Thomas Joslin (3) took the oath for freeman in 1752. I believe Thomas Joslin (3) brought his family to Cumberland in early 1752 since the entire family was listed on the same day. Thomas (4) married Sarah Taft 2/1/1767, intention recorded at Uxbridge, Mass. married in Smithfield, RI. He had 6 children of which: (5)Rufus born 1/7/1774 married Lucinda at Cumberland (Stephen Joslin the town clerk was his brother.) Rufus and Lucinda had 9 children of which: (6)Thomas born Jan 25, 1807. Thomas Joslin (6) went to Winsted, Conneticut, where Thomas Joslin was a blacksmith working for John Boyd at Boyd's Rolling Mill. Which follows the previous blacksmith tradition in this line. Thomas Joslin (6) married Eliza Joslin in Winstead, had 3 daughters before leaving Connecticut for New York and eventually Wisconsin in the late 1830's. By the way, does anyone know where I can find a copy of Edith Wessler's book on the Joslin family? Or does anyone know how to find her daughter Carol Treadway? Thanks for any help, Peg Oberbeck Wauwatosa, Wi. Thank you for any assistance!

Thank you Harold, but no: my Lucinda would have married a JOSLIN; no clues yet as to her maiden name. Also, if I estimate 20-25 years per generation, my Lucinda would have been born somewhere around the 1840s. My best hope is finding someone with a match for James Edison JOSLIN (probably born 1860s, d. 1928). Then we have his mother's name (Lucinda), wife's name (Cora Jane), and a daughter's name (Dorothy) as cross reference. Thanks again!! Lisa L. I am seeking information on Amasa JOSLIN, b. abt. 1790, NY, a physician who moved to Owen Co., IN about 1823. His grandson Claude JOSLIN (son of David J. In the Joslin book, I find Amasa b 5/31/1769, d 10/25/1846. He fell from a wagon. The trail I have stops there. His is the son of Joseph & Mary (Adams), 1 of 11 children. There is another Amasa b 9/1780. Parents John & Abigail (Ware). Give me an address & I will mail you copies of the pages involved. You may want to keep in mind that many folks that did not beleave in fighting the english during the Rev war was right and during and afterwards many moved to Canada (english rule) and then on down generations they trickled back into the USA. This is not the case for everyone but for some i'm sure.
This message is being sent to several lists. I am interested in Joslin's from Canada; primarily those who came to the US between 1840 and 1860. My great great grandfather was Joseph Joslin born 1840 in Canada. According to 1880 census both his parents were born in Canada too. He married (ca 1859) Mary L Pratt who was born in Burlington VT ca 1843. Their first son was Joseph N Joslin born Oct 1860 in Nahsua, NH Hattie b 1862 in VT; George b 1864 MA, Frank b 1867 MA; Ida b 1870 MA; William b 1872; Lilia ca 1875/76; Stella ca 1875/76; Edward b 1877 MA,; Etta born 1887 MA and possibly others. I can not find them on the 1860 census but am still checking. 1870 census -Bolton, Worcester Co, MA 1880 census-Leominster, Worcester Co, MA Mary Pratt Joslin died in 1890 in Leominster. Joseph Joslin died in 1892 in Leominster. I am busy checking out Joslins under numerous spelling possibilities for several New England states and so far I have not found any from Canada. If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it.

Source--"History of Addison County,Vt",1886 page XXX. WILLIAM JOSLIN. Joslin, William, Ferrisburgh, (Vt) ,was born in Cambridge, Lamoille county, Vt., in 1798, and died on April 8, 1886, aged eighty-seven years and nine months. He settled in Vergennes,Vt., on March 20, 1820, as a harness-maker and saddlery manufacturer, and engaged in this business under the firm name of Clark & Joslin and in 1822 he became sole proprietor of this business. He was elected constable and collector, and became sheriff and served from 1824 to 1834; he was then appointed deputy, remaining in that office until 1867. He retired from active business life at Ferrisburgh,Vt., in 1867. He was married in 1831 to Laura Wheeler, who was born in Poultney, Vt., in 1811. They had a family on nine children born to them, four of whom are now living, William H., Cornelia Wheeler, Frederick A., and Frank D. Of the five who are dead, Charles died aged twenty-five years, and George E. died aged twenty-one years. Laura (Wheeler) Joslin, was a daughter of Reuben and Matilda (Hoyt) Wheeler, who settled in Vergenes, Vt., in 1816, where they died. William Joslin was a son of Jonas and Barbara (Dalrymple) Josin, who were natives of Massachusetts, and died in Hinesburg, Vt. They had a family of five children born to them, Milton D., Rhoda, Barbara, Jonas, and William. Mr. Joslin was burned out in February, 1866, losing all his furniture and clothing, and sustaining a still greater loss by losing $ 2,150 of his own, $ 600 of the Wentworth estate, and $ 2,500 of the George E. Parker estate, all in government bonds, and as yet are a total loss. The bonds were of the first issue.

The writer, a woman, was going thru a divorce at this time, and writes of how distressing it was. She did not write her name in the front of the book, as was customary back then, but I can figure out that she was Mrs. Everett Joslin of Leceister/Worcester Massachusetts, and the mother of Mary and Eliza. I know this, because I recenlty aquired about 60 diaries from this family, most of them written by Mary and Eliza. Some examples of her writing are: Jan 1, 1856 - At Jonesville, Mich, with Cousin D. A. Smith and sad enough, for I am obliged to send my Mary off for fear of her Father!! Brother Wm and she left at 1 O'clock p.m. The afternoon and evening were occupied with callers. Have a bad cough. January 5 - Feel undecided whether to let the trial go on or withdraw. I want to frustrate Joslin's plans and will if possible. He shall not marry Belle Dorchester without her knowing how basely I have been treated. Went to see Taft. Mr. Mather is going to see the Justice and state the case to him. January 12 - Received a letter from Eliza. Sent letters to Harrington and Mr. K. J. Whittenmore. Went to see lawyers. Carried them letters. Concluded to do as everybody tells me, that is get a divorce as quick as possible. Feel so bad I cannot let it go. Went to see Mr. Gardner. Found him gone. Wrote a note to taft to see me at the Sherman house. Concluded to let the trial go on until his witness is sworn, then go see Hessler. Saw Frank. April 18 - Sewed in the morning. Several beggars rang the door bell! Went to the public Library and took a walk on the common. Mrs. Answorth called. Oct 29 - Went to Mr. Turner's room with Mrs. Gilmore for her picture. Got a nice one. Was introduced to Mr. Cutting. Tremont Torch light Procession. Splendid affair. Went to Mr. Campbell's to see it. November 3 - Charles Sumner was welcomed home. Large procession. Saw it. Called on Mrs. Lee. Mrs. Shermway and Mrs. Woodard. In the evening went in to Mrs. Elizabeth Gilmores. She seemed to travel quite a bit. From Michigan to Albany/Troy New York and to the Worcester/Boston area. Her ex husband did marry that "other woman", but I can't seem to find the entry now, so you'll just have to read the whole diary. When she wrote, she seems to express what shes thinking quite well. She wrote in spurts and missed the entire months of June and December, but wrote most of the other times. I found it quite interesting that she wrote of her divorce back when it was quite rare. Leather bound diary has general wear. Her writing is very legible. A most interesting read!
