That looks like John T. Cowden. Notice that you can see how he makes his Js, so it is not a J, for sure. We can't see enough of his writing, but I think that is defiantly a C on the surname. My advice is, when you cannot make out a letter, go through the census, etc., that is also written in the same hand, and look for names where there is no doubt what it is. That way you can see how the letter was written there. Same goes when you want to eliminate a letter, as is this case. Compare! Hope this helps, Carleen
