    3. As some of you noticed, a list server that houses some of the RootsWeb lists had some problems for the past week or so, resulting in no list mail from the lists using that machine. This problem has now been corrected, and things should be back to normal. In the future, if you stop receiving mail from this list, there are five steps you can take to try to find out why. 1) TRY TO SEND A QUERY TO THE LIST ABOUT AN ANCESTOR. If you receive your query back through the list, that means that the list is working ok, but that people are just not posting. If your query does NOT get posted on the list, and/or you do not receive it, 2) GO TO PASSWORD CENTRAL to see if you are subscribed to the list - http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Enter your e-address in the box on that page and check the appropriate box to see which lists you are on. You will be sent an e-mail that will tell you all the lists to which you are currently subscribed. If you are subscribed, but not receiving mail, 3) GO TO ROOTSWEB HELPDESK http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/form1.html to see if there is any information in the yellow box on the left telling about a problem with a list server If there is no information in the yellow box on the left telling about a problem, 4) POST TO ME <cch@netdoor.com> and I will try to figure out what is wrong. Use my name - CAROL - as the subject, so I will be sure to notice it. If doing all of these things doesn't tell you why you are not receiving your mail, 5) ASK THE ROOTSWEB HELPDESK about it. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/form1.html - just fill in the form and submit it - someone will get back to you by e-mail. 1. Eliza Jordan of Union & Alexander Co., Illinois
    2. Dayton and Annette Cook
    3. My great great grandmother, Eliza L. Jordan/Jourden was born about 1830 in North Carolina. In 1847, she married David Everhart (born about 1825 in Ohio) in Union County, Illinois. David and Eliza seem to have lived in Missouri for a short time, because my great grandmother, Florance Evaline Everhart, was born there about 1857, although her siblings were all born in Illinois, where the whole family appears in the 1850 and 1870 censuses of Alexander Co. Frederick Everhart, apparently a close relative of David, was married to Catherine Jordan in Union Co. Catherine was probably a sister to Eliza. That family also lived then in Alexander Co., Illinois. I would appreciate any information available about Eliza Jourden, her parents, and related families. -- Dayton Cook

My direct lineage is from JOHN HENRY TUCKER, SR. who married FLORENCE ELLEN SELPH (sister: Zelia S. Pugh - brother: Wilbur Selph)... John Henry Tucker's wife FLORENCE ELLEN SELPH was the daughter of FANNY JORDAN b.1865 and HENRY SELPH b.1863 <son of William H. Selph and Mary b.1836> If anyone has any information on William H. Selph and his wife Mary, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you... John and Florence Tucker's 8 children: My mother *GLADYS ANNIE TUCKER b.1915 m.WILSON C.GARRISON, SR 1912... TUCKER b.1926 m.Lucille & Donna... CLARENCE T. TUCKER b.1930 m.Bernice Chenault... HERBERT TUCKER b.1933 m.Marvin F. Samuel... John Henry Tucker and Florence Ellen Selph were my grandparents and I am searching for our ancestors and extended family. I believe his father to be JOHN WESLEY TUCKER. born about 1837 in Maryland. He is listed in the U.S. Enrollment Records for Ann Arundel County, dated Oct 29, 1862., as being an "able-bodied male citizen"., in the 6th Election District of said county. His post office is listed as Friendship, Md. Saint Mary's Co., Maryland . He is listed as having 'gone south', which indeed, he did! He enlisted in Capt. R. Snowden Andrew's 1st Maryland Artillery CSA in Fredericksburg, Va. on June 27, 1861. On April 7, 1862, in Caroline Co.,Va., he married FANNIE COVINGTON, daughter of James Covington and Mary Chenault . John W. Tucker was discharged from service at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond on October 29, 1864. He spent the rest of his life in Caroline Co, VA., dying there on December 23, 1895... Brief history of the Tucker family from Maryland and Caroline Co., Va. In 1941, the United States Government bought more than 298 acres of my grandfather's old home place, which is now Fort A.P.Hill... "As they watched the military jeeps and trucks passing by their home, they knew pretty soon they would have to live somewhere else". JOHN W. TUCKER purchased land from Frank Richerson's "Butler Plantation" in Caroline County. The house was built in 1820 by Edmerend Pendleton who also built "Edmonsbury" and "White Plains" near Sparta, Va. Later, my grandparents purchased this property from John Henry's father and more property adjoining this. JOHN HENRY TUCKER, born and raised in Caroline County, VA,, built the first "sweet potato houses" on his property in Caroline Co., Va.. Other farmers, as far away as Culpepper, Va., used these houses. Sweet potato's were stored and cured in these houses for approximately 6 weeks. Stoves were used to keep a temperature of 70 degrees before they were then shipped to Washington, D.C. where they were later shipped to the Safeway Grocery Stores. The Tucker family raised about 2,000 bushels of sweet potatoes every year. John Henry Tucker would hire 12-15 men for two weeks every year, to help dig sweet potatoes. His wife Florence prepared and served three meals a day for the workers. During the winter, in the deep snows, is when the sweet potatoes would sell the best. Crops of tobacco, cucumbers and corn were also raised in large quantities. They had four horses used in the early years for farming of the land. It was only in the later years that they purchased tractors to do the work. Corn and wheat was taken to Cook's Mill to be ground. I remember my mother talking about what a treat it was to trade a few eggs for a bag of candy at an old store near the mill which is still standing. John and Florence Tucker's 8 Tucker children had to walk about 2 miles to catch the bus to Sparta school. The first car John Henry bought was a 4 door, 1935 Chevrolet which he bought for $999.00 from Blatt Chevrolet in Milford. That was a lot of money then and he paid for it in cash. John Henry and Florence Ellen Tucker were good, honest people. Often John Henry would say, "my word is my bond" and many business deals were made with just a handshake. The Tucker's had a lot of friends in Caroline County, and if anyone ever needed some help, everyone would pitch in. I can imagine how they felt while watching military jeeps and trucks passing by, for they knew it was the beginning of the government buying their land that they were so proud of and had worked so hard on... Now they'd have to live somewhere else!
