I would like to add a few more thoughts about the ongoing search for "proof" about the roots of Samuel and Thomas Jordan. In my last posting I said that most genealogist I have spoken with feel that in this country most of the public records have been searched since the early Jamestown papers have been gone over for years, but there are other avenues and I don't want to discourage anyone. First of all there are always new papers being discovered. In Greenbrier County, West Virginia, early forgotten records were recently discovered in the basement of the court house some bearing the signature of Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry!! It appeared in the local newspaper and it sounded like most of the discovered papers were pertaining to things like land deeds etc. which could provide the missing genealogy link for someone. It's just an example of how we need to keep going back to libraries, historical societies, etc. in the areas we are searching and be on their mailing lists so we are aware of the new findings. For the early Jamestown Jordans there are probably early collections of family papers in the Library of Virginia, the Virginia Historical Society and the Williamsburg Library and Reseach Center that should be read. Even if the people whose name the collection is under, were not alive that early, sometimes there are papers, records, letters, etc. from, or pretaining to, earlier ancestors, deeds and such. We need to go to these places and ask about family and manuscript collections from the 1600 and 1700's, especially the ones that are not indexed, because those are the ones that maybe noone looking for Samuel has taken the time to go through. The Virginia Historical Society recently acquired a collection of extremely rare early Virginia books and papers from the Mellon Collection. I think there is some information online, but it probably also needs for someone to go do some hands-on research, but you should probably call and find out what the guidelines are. Sometimes you need a reservation or pass. There is also a collection of Nicholas Farrer papers from England in in either the VA Historical Sociey or Virginia Library on film in the old hard to read english handwriting. The last time I checked it had not been indexed but might be by now. Nicholas Farrer was related to the Farrer that married Cecily Jordan after Samuel died and was the executor of Samuel's estate. Either the Virginia Historical Society or the Virginia Library is working on a project getting copies from England of papers relating to the history of Virginians that are in English repositories and whatever is acquired should be constantly updated in research.
