Thanks for all the information. I think I'm out of luck here. I know my great grandmother's father's name but that is as far back as I can go. His name is William Jordan born in TN about 1811 and married Mary H. born about 1817 in TN. These dates are from the 1860 TN Census from the age they gave. Again thanks! Tina is right. For DNA testing on Jordans we need a direct male line. If you can confirm a living, male Jordan cousin, then that probably would cover any female lines. The word is "confirm." I have access to the FT-DNA order page, so send me or Norman Jordan your order information (12 or 25 marker test), name, address, contact phone, e-mail address, and either of us can submit an order for a kit - sent to you with invoice. I too have been looking for a William Jordan for over 10 years. He too was born in 1830. He lived in Western North Carolina from 1860 until he died in the early 1900's. I have not been able to find his parents, his siblings, or his place of birth. These Jordan's sure are elusive characters. I just keep hoping that somewhere, sometime, it will all come together. A cousin was going to do the testing for us on our Shelton lines until I read about the ALL MALE lineage. Luckily another cousin stepped in there and did the testing for us. My 1st cousin and myself descend with a female in that line, so he couldn't do the testing. This is why I brought this up. Some folks would love to participate, but cannot. I may later do the testing on my maternal lines which follows the all female line. I don't see why you should feel like you are under any big burden...I have been stuck on my William Jordan in WV for THIRTY yes 30 stinking years!!!! and there are just as many Johns as there are Williams...and there are more different tribes of Jordan than you can imagine!! Hi Norman, This is just to let you know that I will participate in the study, as I have already indicated to Bob Jordan. My earliest Jordan ancestor so far traced died in now Montgomery County, PA, in 1758. He was John Jordan, who described himself as a tailor. His origin is unknown, although there is some evidence he may have immigrated from Ireland. Many of his descendants through his son Francis are known, although I am not acquainted with any beyond second cousins. Documentation of known descent seems sound. I have looked at the FamilyTree site, which seems to offer reliable testing. I'm planning to get the 25 marker test, but need to know how to access it at the reduced price for family studies. It's great that you are getting this underway. Is there any ongoing DNA study involving the Jordans of southern Virginia and northern North Carolina?? My earliest confirmed ancestor is Pritchard Jordan - early 1800's - of Pasquotank Co., NC. We have reason to believe he and his family are descended from one of the lines that came from Samuel Jordan of Virginia but have not yet been able to prove it. Jane Larish

We have a very active organization and at our board meeting last week the DNA study was approved and they gave me small amount of $$ to be used for postage, phone and that sort of thing. We are interested in using this to strengthen some of our lines but mostly to see if we tie together with the other Jordan Lines throughout the WORLD! This could be a big help in Jordan genealogy studies. We are hopping that we can attract descendants from all the various Jordan lines to make this a really large test. What we need is two distant cousins (not 1st or 2nd cousins) in a line to take the test. The 12 marker test for $99. may be best for most. This will tell you if you have a match with another person. Then if possible do the 25 marker test to get a much closer match. This is not painful, no blood is involved. If you at all interested send me a e-mail and I will send you lots of info.
