So, that's why there is an upgrade available. If you need an upgrade, please contact them again, but it won't do much good in this case unless both parties upgrade to the 25 marker test. There are two members who match on the 12 marker test except for one marker (off by one). It was my understanding that a sequence change could take place at any generation (mutation) and that these two individuals could be related. But to make sure, they must upgrade to the 25 markers. When one of them contacted you to find out about upgrading, you told him you would not do this unless you heard from him again. My question - should I discourage people in this situation to not upgrade, or the reverse. Of course, you have the experience with one number mismatches, so would you please give me some input. 3. Some of the material concerning early English Jordans comes from a reported Jordan who fought as a knight in the Crusades (about 1200 A.D.). If he was a knight, then he probably was a Norman. He took his name from the Jordan River. Most of the Jordan names I have seen before 1600 were in England, but there were some in other European countries. They probably all took their name from the river - for religious or other reasons. So, many Jordan lines are not related. We can be thankful from a genealogical point of view we are not Johnson, Brown, Jones, or Smith. Bob

    2. The people tested are living descendants of the ancestors. The Y-chromosome DNA makes few mutations when passed from male to male each generation. The 12 marker test tells you whether you match genealogy DNA with another individual and therefore that person's entire male-to-male ancestry back to a common ancestor. The 25 marker test is significantly more accurate than the 12 marker test and provides a better estimate of how far back two people share a common ancestor. 3. Hello, I am trying to find the parents of Henry J. Jordan b. abt. 1838 in Wolverhampton. There seems to be a connection with the town of Codsall and Tetttenhall Wood. I have no information on siblings. I am also trying to determine which of three women (perhaps all !) were married to him. The 1901 census has him married to Emily A. Jordan, the 1881 Census a Sarah Jordan (Starmer) and on his sons memorial from WWI, his mother is listed as Mary Jordan! His children were Lillian, Bernard, Edith and possibly an Alfred. He was a Merchants Hardware Clerk. I also have some information that points to a connection with Cuba, as a son ran a sugar plantation there for a short time. I know that some relatives came to the USA but I haven't been able to make the connection with any of the info I've research on American Jordans. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris Chiasson

    3. I understood it to be that William Enoch Jordan b. 1803 and George Jordan b. 1784 had a close DNA match. The William Jordan that married Elizabeth Woodson is the same William Jordan who did migrate to KY, and his 2nd wife was Lucy Stith. This from the Stith family genealogy page... "Lucy STITH, b. March 12, 1761; died after 1817, since her name is mentioned in will of her husband William Jordan in Breckinridge Co., Ky., dated Feb. 15, 1817. Married in Bedford Co., Va., June 15, 1780, to William Jordan, whose name appears in notes on Richard STITH, Senior, Lucy's father. William Jordan was first married in Goochland Co., Va., to Elizabeth Woodson. To this first union was born one son Woodson Jordan whose name appears in the will of his father, Page 27 - Wills of Breckinridge Co., Kentucky, compiled by Annie Walker Burns, Genealogist. The will was drawn Feb. 15, 1817; probated May Term of Court, 1817 ". There are several incidences of the first name George in the line of this William Jordan, no relation to the Arthur Jordan/George Jordan family that we know of. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 8:18 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [JORDAN] DNA confusion?? If I read the discussion correctly--William Enoch Jordan b. 1803 is descended from a George Jordan b. 1784 Bedford Co. VA. (Larry Jordan's line) Then, the same email suggests that there is a kinship with a William Jordan who married an Elizabeth Woodson 1771 and later a Lucy Stith then migrated to KY. Finally, this William is presumed descended from the Thomas/ Samuel line. First, it was my understanding that the William who married Elizabeth Woodson remained in VA. And, that the William who married Lucy Stith and migrated to KY was a different person. Second, it was my understanding that George Jordan comes from the line of Arthur Jordan whose brother was named George. (Robert Jordan's line) Lastly, Norman Jordan (on this list) has claimed descent from Robert Jordan of New England--is there confirmation or negation of a relationship between the New England Jordan's and the VA/NC Jordans? 3. First of all, the two DNA samples are mismatched by one marker out of 12. That could mean there was a mutation on one gene sequence which could happen any generation. There may be a match here or not. Probably need to upgrade the tests to 25 to make sure. I think this discussion should be continued a bit on this line (William Enoch). George is mostly used by the Arthur Jordan family, but around 1780, people of all families started using George Washington as a given name. This may apply to Juliana Wend Jordan's family, but probably not in general. The name is in widespread use by many apparently unrelated individuals from many countries. One story I've heard, of unknown authenticity is that, during the crusades many individuals from many countries traveled to Palestine, and seeing the River Jordan described in the Bible was a "big thing". This was also a time when surnames began to be commonly used in Europe, so some of these individuals adopted "Jordan" as their surname. Others who didn't travel, but who heard the stories of the crusades, likewise adopted the name. I don't have a source for this, but at least it helps to explain the name's widespread use. 1. Re: [JORDAN] DNA confusion??
    2. I can see that this DNA genealogy can create confusion if not properly handled. We probably need some kind of clearing house for the results that allows us to do the following: - Map the people who find DNA matches and their oldest documented ancestor - Determine what documented Jordan line is the most likely connection with the mapped set of matching results - Advertise for participation in the project to get descendants of the Jordan line that is documented and may contain matching DNA - Publish the common Recent Ethnic Origin (REO) ancestor locations (country of origin of oldest DNA connected ancestor) We probably need a few online templates that facilitate such a clearing house and a website to post the results.
