Hi fellow Jordans, I'm still looking for my German, Jordan family. Earliest I have is David Jordan b. abt 1795 in PA/KY/MD???. He married Mary Chambers (b. MD) in 1812 in Bracken Co. KY. One signer of the marriage bond was a Thomas Jourdan whom I ASSUME was David's father. I have some land deeds for a Thomas and Susanna(Ruhanna) Jordan about that time in Bracken Co. KY. David and Mary moved to Indiana by 1820 and lived in Martin, Knox, and Daviess IN counties until 1850 when I lose them. My great grandfather, George Chambers Jordan moved to Illinois in 1880, but was back in Indiana (Terrie Haute) by 1890. I think David had a brother, Thomas Jordan, Jr. who either stayed in Kentuky (and married Mary Polly True and had child Darius Jordan) or moved to Illinois. (I found two Thomas Jordan, Jr. in Bracken KY, dk which is my ggg..uncle.) Nice to see so much traffic on the list. Lynn Jordan Dielman in San Diego
I dont recognize any of the data that you have shown but I am from that general area of Ala. just a short distance north of there. And we do have a William Henry in our family but would have been later than the one that you mention.
I have been reading the [email protected] web.com and have yet to come across the only names I am familiar with--------Lynn Boyd and Clyde Dozier Jordan---father and son. Dr. Andrew M. JORDAN b. 1818 in PA d. 1888 MD Father Naval Surgeon unknown died abt 1836 wife Sarah Troup JORDAN b. abt 1831 PA? children John b. 1850 Susan b. 1852 Littleton b. 1854 (Doctor Cecil County, MD) James b. 1856 Sarah b. 1858 William b. 1860 (Doctor in Phila?) Sally b. 1863 Benjamin b. 1866 Henry b. 1872 OBIT CECIL WHIG JAN 1889 Dr. (Andrew) Michael Jordan, who was buried at West Nottingham cemetery on the last Sabbath of the year 1888, had a rather remarkable career. He was born in Philadelphia in 1818. His father was a distinguished surgeon in the U. S. Navy. His mother belonged to a wealthy and aristocratic family of that city. When the lad was five or six years of age his father and mother for reasons satisfactory to each separated. Mrs. Jordan subsequently married Hiram Taylor and came to reside in the 6th district, Cecil County, Md. Young Jordan remained in Philadelphia and attended the best schools that could be found in that city. When within a few years of completing his collegiate course, his father died leaving him heir to what was considered in those days a large fortune. This money however he could not obtain until he should reach his majority. He therefore advertised it for sale through his guardian. Mr. Hiram Taylor becoming cognizant of this fact hastened to the Quaker City and became the purchaser of the young man's prospective patrimony. The journey to and from the distant city was performed by Mr. and Mrs. Taylor in their light family carriage drawn by one horse. When out in the lonely country, on their return trip they were attacked by two mounted masked men who had evidently followed them for the purpose of robbery and perhaps murder to accomplish their purpose. But Mr. Taylor was a man of great courage and determination and had prepared for an emergency of this kind by the purchase of two loaded revolvers. These he proceeded to use with such telling effect that the would be robber retreated without accomplishing any part of their purpose. After completing his college course and graduating with credit young Jordan read medicine, as was then the custom with those aspiring to its practice with one of the most eminent physicians of his day. After this he came to live with his mother and practice his profession in this county where he continued to reside until his death. He was a man of sound sense and most excellent judgment, especially in matter pertaining to his profession but possessed many peculiar ideas concerning medicines which were regarded by his fellow practitioners as mere vagaries. As long as he practiced medicine he enjoyed a large but never lucrative practice as the greater part of his later life was spent upon a small farm just on the verge of that undefined region known as the "barrens" in the Eighth district. He was twice married and leaves a family of grown children and also a widow. Thank you Bob Jordan [email protected]
My Jordan line came from Pennsylvania also. My ancestor, Jacob Jordan was born in 1764 in Loudoun co, Va. By 1806 he has moved the family to Guernsey Co, Ohio. I noticed your ancestors were in Pennsylvania & Ohio also, but not the same locations. Did they ever live in the Shenandoah Valley in Va? There seems to be a migration pattern of sorts from Pa to Ohio. In Jacob's case by way of VA. Has anyone else noticed this in their Jordan research? In a message written Thu, 30 Jan 2003, 19:31:35 EST, [email protected] writes: I have a William Jordan born around 1830. He was in NC. Could he have been a son to Alex? I'd like to know about your William Jordan. I am researching my husband's Jordan line, and I live in Graham Co., NC, which was part of Cherokee Co., NC until April 1872. Alexander Jordan, born c1773 in NC; m. Nancy (MNU (maiden name unknown))m born c1775 in GA (from 1850 census of Cherokee Co., NC). So far I have found two children born to Alexander and Nancy: 1. Alexander "Mack" Jordan, born c1818 in Elbert Co., GA (according to the 1860 census for Cherokee Co., NC). Mack married Susannah Sneed, b. bet. 1827-1830 in Iredell Co., NC. (On the message boards, Fountain Jordan is listed as the father of Alexander "Mack" Jordan, but the census information, as well as information given me by a descendant of one of Mack's Cherokee Indian wives confirms his lineage. See below.) 2. William Jordan, born c1830 in NC. By 1860 William had left Cherokee Co. or was deceased. I have been unsucessful in finding him elsewhere. In the 1850 census for Cherokee Co., NC, William was hired out as a farmhand and was living in the home of George W and Elizabeth Hayes, parents of Langdon Hayes who married Mira Sneed, sister of Susannah Sneed. (See details below.) More about Alexander "Mack" and Susannah Sneed Jordan: >From the 1860 census, I have determined that Susanna was the daughter of Robert Sneed and Lucy MNU. Robert was born c1790 in VA. His wife, Lucy, was born c1800 in Wake Co., NC. In 1860 the Alexander "Mack" Jordan family lived 5 houses away from Robert Sneed. Robert and Lucy had a daughter named Mira, born c1828, also in Iredell Co., NC, just as Susannah was. At the time of the 1860 census, Mira had 4 children, and all were living with her parents. (On the message boards, I have seen Mira's children listed as being the children of Robert and Lucy, but the actual census image reveals that they were, in fact, grandchildren.) While searching old marriage records in Cherokee Co., NC, I found an application for marriage for Mira and Langdon Hayes, made on 20 Jan 1866. Alexander "Mack" Jordan also had three Cherokee Indian wives (not recognized by white law) and fathered many children by them: 1. Catherine "Kate" Ward, born c1826 in Towns Co., GA. Kate was the daughter of Charles Ward and Josie Evans. 2. Nancy Willis, born c1819 in Elbert Co., GA. 3. Eliza MNU, born c1824 in Towns Co., GA. All three had been either abandonded or orphaned when little girls and were raised by Old Alexander and Nancy. On Kate Ward/Jordan's application for tribal membership, she stated that she was married to a mand by the name of Jordan. I have much information about the children born to each one and will be happy to share. Karen Trull Jordan __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Janeann Pittman b. 1948 (self) I am trying to find out what happened to Joshua Jordan b. 1818. He simply seems to have disappeared between 1855 and 1865. I find no death records but his wife Jemima is listed as a widow in 1865. While my genealogically minded cousins feel certain of this data, I have some confusion about the parents of Joshua Jordan b. 1818. An article written about his son, Sanford C. Jordan, states that Joshua;s father was "Samuel Jordan, an old soldier of the Indian Wars." Somehow I am having trouble finding my source, but I believe the article came from *The History of Wayne and Clay Counties* 1884. . _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus
I am looking for information of the ancestors of Ephraim Jordan, b. 1842 in SC. He arrived in Dallas County, AL between 1846-1850 with his mother Millrey (Milbry), sister Rebecca and brothers James and Isaac. No one knows who his father was but he was not listed with the family in the 1850 Dallas County, Alabama census. Ephraim married (1) Julia Ann Phillips on 11-19-1865 in Dallas County, AL and (2) Mary Jane (Jennie M.) Newton on 9-25-1890 in Marengo County, Al. Ephraim passed away 2-5-1921 and is buried in Sweet Water Cemetery in Marengo County, AL. I would appreciate any possible leads on Ephraim's mother Millrey and her unknown Jordan husband. Laraine
Joshua Jordan family historians and genealogists, I am VERY interested in learning more and verifying this Jordan family. One being Josiah Jordan of North Carolina Another being Joshia Jordan of VA Another being Jacob Jordan of North Carolina Joshua Jordan (1755) is my direct ancestor, and would like to verify his parnets, as there are too many versions out there. If anyone can assit, or has some source of information, it would be greatly appriciated. Here is what 'notes' I have on the family at this time. NAME: The LDS version also has the husband of this Joshua as Mourning Ricks. This is VERY un likey though. I have documents of NAME: Quaker Meeting notes saying that Joshua and Mourning still lived in Isle of Wight, Va. ..AFTER 1755. Joshua Jordan was born in NAME: PA...although that is not verified either. NAME: Still working on the two other Joshua Jordans. when that is complete, and verified, th en we will have a better idea of who NAME: this person really is. Will of Joshua Jordan dated 1830, Joshua lists a William McCarty, as Joshua's grandson. At t his time, I do not know who this William is. Another source lists another daughter, named Eleanor who married a James McCarty on April 11 , 1817 in Clermont County, Ohio. The mentioned sources of the 1820 Federal Census - Pleasant Township, Brown County, Ohio. Ro ll: M33-86, Page# 377, could be in error. Although, Joshua was in Brown County, Ohio, ther e are TWO Joshua Jordan's on the 1820 Federal Census, that are VERY simular in information, e xcept one number. Further research is needed to verify which is the correct Joshua. The sec ond Joshua is listed as Joshua Jorden on the 1820 Federal Census, Eagle Township, Brown Count y, Ohio. Roll: M33-86, Page# 345. Joshua Jordan was living in Washington County, Pennsylvania prior to emmigrating to Ohio. Jo shua Jordan had purchased land in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1789. This emmigratio n seems to hae happened in the first part of the 1800's, certaintly before 1810. The verifie d Jordan family is seen in Adams, Clermont and especialy in Brown Counties. Four Jordans are found on the 1790 Census in all of Washington County, Pennsylvania. Perhap s all related? They are: Jacob Jordan Pg. 251(Could this be the Jacob Jordan that was also 'from Cowan NC'?) A ccording to the deed of Joshua in 1789, it lists the neighbors by which the land borders, nam ely: Abraham Arnold, Phillip Stichles, William Hulse and John Lines. The 1790 Census of ou r Joshua Jordan, also has the verified neibors of the Arnolds, Philip Stichles (looks like Ni ckel) and also John Lines. The location where Joshua Jordan lived is: Finley Townsip, Washington County in 1788 Richhill Township formed out of Finley Township in 1792. Green County formed out of Washington County in 1796. So, by 1796, they lived in Richhil Townsip, Green County, PA. I think Jacob was in Ohio by 1806, when his youngest child was born. Jacob's brother, Peter, moved to Kentucky in 1797? I am not sure where all of Jacob's brothers & sisters moved to.
