When looking for ancestors, we must start with information that is sure. We can almost do ourselves in by running from one speculation to another. What needs to be done first is to gather all records possible in your "sure" area. That means deed records, court records, tax records (if any), church records, etc. Sometimes deed records can help if they specify where the parties live. I proved my line of Jordans by finding a 1780 deed which was adjacent to my Jordan's land, which stated one of the boundaries as " the heirs of ----." The local LDS will rent you microfilm of these areas and their records. You know your ancestor was in Rockingham NC? According to that census record, he was married about 1805 -- 2 children under age 10, and born 26-30 years before 1810. Start with deed and tax records. Hope this will help. Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: Sheri Kelly To: JORDAN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, June 18, 2004 9:47 AM Subject: Jordan Lines In VA c 1871 to NC to TN by 1830 List: I have been reading many of the posts made recently on the Octavia Perry Jordan and have emailed a couple of posters privately regarding some hoped for connections to my Jordan lines. I have Jordans in both paternal and maternal lines, at least two different states, and as I find individuals who are connected, there does appear to be a one generation difference. I am now looking for a Jordan family in Virginia who would have had a family by 1781. Some of this family was in the 1810 Rockingham Co., NC census. Since I am not sure which lines my Jordan 3rd ggm actually descended from, my research has waffled from family to family and the lack of an 1820 census for Tennessee has kept me from having more specific data to share. Here are the few bits of info I have, in no way proven, only speculation, and this has been picked up from other information I have found on the internet: First of all I am looking for a Woodford Jordan born c1781 VA, based on census records. In 1810 this Woodford was married and in Rockingham Co., NC and his family was 20010-0010000. There is no 1820 census I have found for Woodford. This same Woodford in 1830 Knox Co., TN he lives next to an Ewell Jordan. In 1840, Woodford now lives in Hawkins Co., TN next to Ewel, and Enoch, and a couple of doors away is Thomas Jurdin (born c 1780-1790). Ewel was born c 1807 NC and Enoch was born c 1815 NC. (This is the same Ewel next to Woodford in the 1830 Knox Co., TN census.) I have found a Thomas Jordan born c 1808 in NC who married an Abigail Payne. One of this Thomas's sons is named Ewel and another named H. Woodson. There was a William Jordan born c 1755 who died after 2/15/1817 in Breckinridge Co., KY, who was married to an Elizabeth Woodson, and their son was Woodson Jordan. Woodson and Woodford are close in names but I have viewed census records of each and the spelling is very different so my conclusion is they are probably not related. In Alabama I have found two Enoch Jordans, father and son. The son Enoch born c 1832 in NC married Elizabeth Batson and one of his daughters is named Arena born 1855, in Alabama. The Ewel (b c 1807-d after 1880) next to Woodford in Tennessee named his daughter Aurena born 1840, in Tennessee. Both Ewel and Enoch (the Tennessee Jordans) named sons Thomas and James, and there was also a James Jordan born c 1798 in NC who did live in Hawkins Co., TN in 1850 (census records). Folks, I realize this post is scattered but it has the basics of what I know. If anyone runs across any hints, clues, ideas, or information which they believe will further me in my reading and research, please let me know. Also, I have done extensive work on the east Tennessee Coffee/Coffey lines and have information to share should someone need help. Does anyone have ANY Jordans residing in NYS about 1764 through 1800? Would like email from you. Ruth Jordan Thoden RThoden@aol.com
Dear Collene and all, It's so good to see such enthusiasm out there!!! You HAVE indeed confused two different Thomas Jordans as most of us have done at some point in our research. The Quaker records are a fabulous tool for our genealogy but must be used with extreme caution. It's so easy to assume two notations within the same time period or even within the same Monthl Meeting are about the same person....but often they aren't. You'll find many unrelated families having members with the exact same names running through the generations. Three John Does with sons Thomas, Mathew, and Richard might all live in Chuckatuck. There can also be families with those same names who do not even appear in the records..or ANY records. Honest people have made the same mistake through the generations. It's made worse when someone with good intentions and not understanding their error puts it in a book or, as we have these days, on a mailing list. Anything we find or receive from other than an ORIGINAL source from THAT time period is not a proven fact. Just because that wonderful Joe Smith in Harborview (or our grandmother!) shared THEIR files with me and they says they had a good source doesn't make it so. Sometimes errors are well meaning. Other times (as in a case in my husband's muddled lineage) a person or persons WANT something to be a certain way so badly they either ignore all evidence or in extreme cases like that of my husband's line they created false documents. In this case the false documents are PROVEN false but there are still many people who haven't heard about it or who simply refuse to accept that a large part of their work is based on lies. We owe it to our ancestors, our descendants, and to ourselves to get it right. Please be very careful what you accept as fact, what you share with others as fact...and never "assume". Now of Thomas and Margarett had only carved what THEY really knew about their families on a nice hard rock somewhere........! Carleen, VERRRY FUNNY <G> . I guess the Cajun pronuciation would be pretty much the same as the French...in which case I believe the J has a softer sound and the second syllable would be accented and pronounced "DAN" sound that I cannot reproduce in print but the N doesn't sound like an N but a nasal twang. As in the name of the actor Louis Jourdan, non? Much fun anyhow Carleen. Certainly keeps the emails coming, doesn't it Carole In a message dated 6/17/04 5:05:14 PM Eastern Daylight Time, JORDAN-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: > I will repeat what a Jordan friend told me her daddy said abt it. > He said "If w-o-r-d is word, than J-o-r-d is Jurd." > >
I will post this request again, and see if anyone out there can connect. I am searching for the family-parents of one Elizabeth Jordan born 18/19 May 1770 in Virginia. She married @ 1790-93 to one James Larue of VA born 1758. They had their first seven children in VA before moving into Belmont/Guernsey County, OH @ 1805. One of these children may have been born in MD, per a census record. Elizabeth and James named their children in this order: Sarah, Charity, William, Permelia, John, Margaret, James, Laban, David and Eliza Ellen. The 1820 census refers to another male son, that may have been born to them 1810-1820, name unknown. James Larue was born 1758, so at his marriage to Elizabeth, he would have been 32-35 years old. Could this have been his second marriage? Possibly. Elizabeth would have been 20-23 years old at marriage to James Larue. Could she have been married previously? Again possibly. Has anyone out there discovered anything new in regards to this couple? Denise
As time permits, I am going to get back to work on the Tracking Thomas site - if any of you have AL census data or such extracted for the east central AL counties listed at that site that you would like included, will be happy to add it 0 just send it to my <cch@netdoor.com> addy with the subject line "Put On TT website" - and if you do send data, be sure to include a bio of any Jordan brick wall in those counties. For those of you not already familiar with the site - it links off the middle tagline at the bottom of posts from this list -some JORDAN resources - http://www2.netdoor.com/~cch/surnames/jordan/ Carol C-H <cch@netdoor.com> <carolch@bellsouth.net> http://www2.netdoor.com/~cch/
Thanks Sheri, for sharing your information on your Jordan line. Some of names sound familiar to me and if I run across it, I will either post it on the Jordan L Roots, or email you. List: I have been reading many of the posts made recently on the Octavia Perry Jordan and have emailed a couple of posters privately regarding some hoped for connections to my Jordan lines. Doesn't anyone remember Hamilton Jordan (pronounced Jerdin) who played a prominent role in the Jimmy Carter administration? At the time, it was my understanding that this was an old Virginia pronunciation. It had nothing to do with yankee or Southern plumbing. My direct line is an early ANDERSON/JORDAN connection to the James River area of VA. In a book published in 1909, the name is written Jourdan, probably because of pronunciation.
