    1. The name Beggar's Bush
    2. Dianne Larson Ward
    3. There was a very popular play around 1612 named "Beggar's Bush". In my Jordan research I found a number of references to the possibility that Samuel named his home after the play. See this site: http://www.litencyc.com/php/sworks.php?rec=true&UID=6394 and for one of the references to Samuel's home: http://listlva.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0009&L=va-hist&D=0&I=-3&P=180

    1. Jordan surname NB Canada to MA USA
    2. I have been trying to find info on my grandfather's family. He was born Feb 28 1849 in Lancaster Parish NB. His name is James Byron Jordan. I can not find father or mother's name for him. I found an old tracing that a cousin had done years ago that stated his father's name as Aaron Jordan and mother's name as Christine Lahey. It is driving me crazy that I can't make a find to this info. All I know that they were in Lancaster Parish at this time. I have heard that all censuses of Lancaster are not available in 1851 or 1861. Was there one in 1871? If anyone anywhere has info please contact me. Thank you so much

    3. One good source for locating place names is the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form Searching for the "feature name" Jordan finds 802 hits for creeks, hills, churches, cemeteries, schools, etc. across the United States which have Jordan as part of the name. One of them, Jordan Run in Shenandoah County, Virginia, is possibly connected to my ancestor Johann David Jordan (a former Hessian soldier) who settled nearby, ca. 1784. Other search limits are available. See the help page for tips. The results page gives precise geographic coordinates and offers direct links to maps and sometimes even aerial photographs. Sometimes names from deeds, hundreds, etc. are included in the database, and sometimes not--the "Jordan's Grove" recently discussed on the list is not there. Nevertheless, I've found it interesting (and occasionally VERY helpful) to plug in family names and see what I get. Who knows, you may find a mountain named for you, or discover the location of an old family cemetery! Karen Stuart

    1. Beggar's Bush
    2. I have done some research on Beggar's Bush and there are several explanations, but since Samuel isn't speaking to us as yet....we don't know what he meant. There is something called Beggar's Bush which is sort of scrub bushes that grow up after land has been cleared and then is no longer is use, sort of scraggley new growth. The term was also used near London for a certain location where beggars gathered on the outskirts of a forest on a main road leading into London. They gathered there and sometimes were known to rob fancy coaches as they came down the road. In Scotland a "bush" is another word for a hotel or inn, I guess meaning shelter. So instead of the Plaza Hotel it could be the Plaza Bush....the term is still used in Scotland today, but is usually something that was named long ago. There are farms in England named Beggar's Bush but I have not had a chance to research them all as yet. I checked a couple and they were not in existence in the 1600's. connie Grund, Alabama

    3. It was the name that Samuel Jordan called the place where he lived-- he rec'd a large land grand of 450 acres which was called Jordan's Journey and the house where he lived he called "Begger's Bush. I don't know why-- just figured that in 1620 there were a lot of trees and bushes around it and he thought "Begger's Bush" was a good name, then there may have been a special bush called begger's bush. Just my opinion--- I don't know that much about it, but that is what I assumed.
