Is any one researching Anson Jones born Circa 1844 in California? I also wanted to know if any one has access to California Census records? I found Anson's brother Willis Jones living in Placer County, Bath PO, page 29 and next house above him is Anson Jones. Also his father in law is on page 32, Michael Dofferty. I hope this is not to lengthy but I hoped if I gave you enough information on the family someone could connect. Please contact me if any one recognizes these names. Anson Jones was raised in Lumpkin County, Georgia circa 1844. He was the son of William Jones and Elizabeth Perry. Anson served in the Civil War and was on the muster roll of Co. E., in Phillips Legion Georgia Infantry, serving in the Army in North Virginia C.S.A., Lumpkin County, Georgia, Blue Ridge Rifles. He was a private enlisting March 1, 1863. Confederate muster rolls show he deserted around Cleveland, Tennessee on November 7, 1863. He took his oath of allegience at Chattanooga, Tennessee March 5, 1864. He then joined Co., I., 12th. Tennessee Cavalry as a private. Anson suffered greatly from sickness he contracted while in the Civil war. He contracted measles in March of 1864. His brother Samuel testified as well as Newton Jones that Anson was in camp with them and after a heavy march in pursuit of General Hood from Nashville to the Tennessee River that Anson passed out at camp. He was unconscious for several days. His Commanding officer ordered him into the Regt. Hospital in Nashville and he was diagnosed with a severe cold and cough and measles. (This was also where his Uncle John C. Jones Sr. worked as a nurse for 13 months). Anson remained at the hospital for a month and returned to duty but a few days later in camp he once again fell ill and ordered back to the hospital. This time Anson had small pox and remained through most of the summer. After he was released a second time his commanding officer stated that Anson was in frail and feeble health so he made him the regt. cook from then on. Anson was discharged on October 7, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas with his brother Samuel Jones. Samuel and Anson traveled back to Georgia for a quick visit but reported on his pension application he was in California in November 1, 1866 at which time he lived at Colfax or Forest Hill, Placer County, California until February 1877. Forest Hill was a lively gold mining town for many years. During this time Anson met and married Catherine Agnes Daugherty/Dougherty/Dofferty. She was the daughter of Michael Daugherty. Catherine was born in New York on March 13, 1855. Anson and Catherine were married on July 3, 1875 at San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. Rev. James Largan a Catholic Clergyman married them. Catherine was 20 years old and Anson was 29 years old. Both resided at Forest Hill, Placer County, California. Anson primary occupation was a miner and farmer. For a several years before Ansons death and shortly prior to his death, Anson was a toll collector. He lived in the Companys house as partial payment for his services. Anson stated on his pension application that He, Catherine and family moved to You Bet, Nevada County, California from 1877 to 1886. Anson is listed on the Voters Register for 1880 here.
