    3. It has appeared to me that the JONES families all started out in a similar area in the NE early on, and many went out to land that was granted from the gov't. for military service. Isn't it possible that the same families divided and went to these various regions of Ohio, IN, GA, etc. My line went from MD to PA, OH, IA and IL. I find other Joneses who ended up in the same area of IA and IL but came up from KY and TN. Isn't it possible that these Jones families communicated and came to IA or IL on recommendation from other Jones' relatives? Whatever, we Jones' descendants have a challenge putting our lines together. Julie Jones Beenblossom

    3. Julie: Sorry but I do disagree with you. I don't think that all Jones families started out in the NE. For one thing, some Joneses were here in the 1600's and the land-grants from the Revolutionary War didn't take place until significantly later. Mine were in PA in about 1700, then into MD and then to ETN. I've never agree with the theory that all people of one particular surname are connected. I do think you'll find migration patterns from one area to another where entire groups of connected families moved in a clump. For example, my Dad is from a tiny little town in ETN and while researching I've found a large number of the early settlers in that town were originally from MD. Looks like one family moved then wrote 'home' and told everyone to come on down. A pretty typical migration was South then West (where there was more land). My late wife's Jones ancestor, John Jones, came to Charleston, South Carolina from Wales on the ship "Earl of Hillsboro" which departed from Belfast, Ireland in 1767. Bill Cherepy Grayson, GA
