NOTES FOR MORDECAI 2) LINCOLN & SARAH 3) JONES - my 7th gr. grand parents - Mordecai 2) had a brother 2 yrs older than himself who died at 3 weeks, also by the name of Mordecai. Mordecai moved to Hull across the [Mass] bay, he was a blacksmith. There he md Sarah Jones d/o Abraham Jones. The Jones family had come to New Eng abt the same time as Mordecai's father Samuel 1) Lincoln - who was referred to as the "the weaver". Mordecai and his wife Sarah lived at Hull several years, moving to the settlement of Cohasset, which was between Hingham and Scituate. His bro Daniel 2) LINCOLN became one of the towns leading citizens, Mordecai found a place a couple of miles from his brother Daniel; there was a falls where Bound Brook runs into the salt inlet called the gulf. Here Mordecai decided to build a dam and have power for a sawmill. Mordecai bought the land in 1691 for $35.00 and soon had a sawmill. He built a house, which stood until a few years ago [1924] it was destroyed in a fire. Mordecai had three dams, very unique for his time. Mordecai was not only interested in his dams. He was one of the first ironmasters in the country. He became very successful. His wife Sarah JONES LINCOLN died toward the end of the century [1700]. She left 4 children, the oldest Samuel was abt 14, the youngest a little girl of 5 or 6 years old. Mordecai md2) Mary 3) HOBART widow of Samuel 3) Chapin, 6 yrs younger than himself. He built a house for his new wife in Scituate, Plymouth, MA. It was still standing in 1924. It was during the time of Mordecai and his brother Daniel that the witch trials were going on in Salem. It was the people like Mordecai and his brother that dwelt with all kinds of men, they revolted against the Salem madness. Mordecai's two eldest sons, Samuel and Abraham left the area, why they left is unknown. Isaac another son by his first marr was 20 by now, he stayed with his father and md in 1716, his father built a house for Isaac and his bride. There were two children a son and dau by his 2nd marr to the widow Mary HOBART - CHAPIN. Mordecai died 1727, leaving a large estate for those times. 3,099 lbs, 14s, 8d. The largest part of the estate was left to his wife and her son Jacob. The house he built for her at Scituate, with its contents and with the lands and mills. to his son Isaac the house on the heights, across the brook. Samuel the oldest son was to have 110 lbs in bills of credit and to Abraham the younger son 60 lbs, "besides what he hath". an interesting provision in his will is that for contributing to the "learning" of three of his grandchildren, should their parents bring them up to "liberal education" Mordecai is buried in an old, old yard, still in use [1924] and in good condition. A little hunting brings you to the old slate headstones, looking as fresh as the day they were put up, there you will find side by side the stones of Mordecai and his 2nd wife, the widow Mary HOBART - CHAPIN who outlived him by 18 yrs. A headstone and grave seem strangly to round out the earthly span. At all events after vainly hunting through Hingham graveyards to find the resting place of Samuel Lincoln and discovering that in the necessary extension of the town its first graveyard had been destroyed, there is satisfaction in knowing that Mordecai 2) Lincoln, Samuel 1) Lincoln's son, the 3rd great grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln has a peaceful resting place on a quiet hillside, not far from the home he built and loved. vi.
