Wava Barnett. My ancestor was bonded out. In the old days the child inherited the debts of the father. The father borrowed the money to make the trip to America. The father died at sea and his 2 boys took up his debt. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wava Barnett" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 25, 2005 9:17 PM Subject: [Jones] Chandler/Jones/Kentucky/Harrison or Campbell County > My mother's cousin worked on our family history. Thanks for the information. I know life was different in those days, but I really hate to think of a 12 year old tied to someone other than family for 9 years. I'm sure they needed money, but oh my! I have been doing research at the Family History Library in SLC, for the last two weeks. In my research, I came across an instance in about 1747, of a father dying and four minor children all being apprenticed out to a different master. The youngest child was five years old. The oldest brother, who was apparently of age, had to give his approval for the five year old. There was no further mention of these children in the orphan court records, so I can only assume none of them completed their apprenticeship. And our kids think they have it tough. Marleen Van Horne
That was while our family was still in England according to when the children were born. It just breaks my heart that children were treated this way. Good luck on your search.
