On the 1850 Guilford Co census, in the column where County and State of Birth are written, it says "Cumberland NC" for Jefferson and "Davidson NC" for his wife's mother. This is a pretty good indication that the "Cumberland" to which Jefferson refers on his son's birth certificate is Cumberland the COUNTY. Although I'm a Jones, this family is related to me only through Laura Jones' brother-in-law....... dotsicle
