I have had the DNA test done with Familytreedna and have been satisfied with the process. Although I have not any really close matches yet I am hopeful that as the data bank expands I will eventually get a match. There are so many Jones's out there I thought it would take awhile before I got a match. I was hoping to get my ancestors back to Wales but so far I have only traced them back to Maryland in 1750. My sole purpose was to try to find another researcher tracking the same ancestors I was tracking so donating to a free DNA service that wouldn't give me any results was never anything I would have considered. At one time I was upset by companies who want you to post your family tree on their site and then add it to CD's for sale without giving you anything in return but I eventually decided that having my information out where more people could see it was more important to me. Hi Larry, Don't feel bad about matches. My husband only matches with a cousin who had his done with Sorenson. Even then, there is a 2 marker difference. His Jones goes from VA to NC and then over to TN. I sure hope more JONES take the test. I even checked out Y Search and thought there would be a match in there but the person who seemed the most likely candidate, was at least a 5 marker difference at 37 markers. That's too big a leap for me. My husband had 0 for matches on his FTDNA home page. If you want to compare, his number in 32GRW on Y Search. I can't get his lines back to Wales, either. Only to England. They went from Wales and stayed in England for a few generations before coming over to VA. "only matches with a cousin who had his done with Sorenson" How did he find out his markers since the Sorenson site http://www.smgf.org says they do not send you any results? Lots of us would be interested in a free DNA test IF we could get the results.
I don't know how the cousin found out. I went on the JONES list months ago, looking for who that person could be. Maybe Sorenson gives an ID number so you can see the results of your test. They must give you something so you can load your gedcom. He put his gedcom up. When I first checked, I did not see a gedcom available for his results. I wish I knew the inner workings of that company better. I would never get tested with a company who did not give me my results. What's the point of testing? I have JONES in the 1750's i n MD Capt William JONES daughter Elizabeth JONES m Capt John Duvall. I suspect he was a sea captain not sure yet. It has only been referenced a couple of times. I also used FTDna and am satisfied with results. Just thought that there would be more people doing tests. I had the SCOTT done from VA I learned about time test was taken. I am still pleading with brother to do DNA for JONES side . Alas I have five JONES lines. I really can't understand why they would NOT give you that information. At Genetree I only had to give my name, and address etc. That may have been because of the type of test that I took. I don't know. And the info required ~ may be different for the other tests. I don't know that either. I don't really like to give out a lot of info to these companies either. If I took a particular surname test for "Jones" for instance, I would certainly want the results to be able to compare to other Jones's DNA myself ~ not just to benefit the company's study. How are you to match DNA with other Jones's if you don't have the results of your test?
