Margaret Mabrey, I agree w ith you I have used Rootsweb for years and never affiliated that stuff to Rootsweb. What is that lady doing t o get that. I laugh because I can't even get my code from Ancestry to let me in to post on Rootsweb. I have emailed them many times. My old posts still bring results but there is no way I can answer them any more. I have five JONES lines and ever so often a nother kin is found. I find it kind of hard to believe she gets the junk mail.... for some reason with all the rootsweb groups i am affiliated with I just get ancestry ads... but then i told them they could send them .. I like to read various posts... You never know when someone might come up with a link or person that will make your puzzle get closer to solving On 10/1/07, susi c pentico <susicp@cox.net> wrote: > > Margaret Mabrey, I agree w ith you I have used Rootsweb for years > and never affiliated that stuff to Rootsweb. Its a private site and you have to be invited to get these free ebooks.
I have been following this off topic string (yes, it IS off topic) with some interest, and I am going to make a brief comment at this point before the Admin brings it to a halt, and then not bring it up again. At least not on the list. First of all, relative to the supposed spam that someone got as a result of posting on a list, that just plain CANNOT and DID NOT happen. I am the List Admin of more lists than I really need to have :~( (though not this one), and if you could see the volume of spam that RW filters out as I do, you would understand when I say it does NOT come from subscribing to the list in any way. I have been doing this for over eight years now, and that is just plain not happening as a result of subscribing to this or any other list on RootsWeb. I must assume the original poster does not use a firewall or his/her service provider does not offer spam protection, or at least not EFFECTIVE protection, because that is the only way for such a thing to happen. . . . other than using the Internet, online purchases, filling out surveys, etc. as has already been discussed. It simply DOES NOT COME FROM LIST SUBSCRIPTIONS, or given the number of lists that I admin or subscribe to (over 150 of them!) at the moment, I would be absolutely buried in garbage, and that is simply not happening. I have a good firewall as well as AV, spam, and other protection in addition to what my ISP provides, and almost no spam at all reaches my inbox any more. I hope that clarifies the situation. Nobody dislikes spam any more than I do, but it simply does not come from being a list subscriber. If you do not use a good firewall or spam protection, then that is another issue entirely and not anything that RootsWeb causes or has any control over. As for this or any other list being "of no help" to you, then the first question have is how many queries did you post to the list seeking information? As a List Admin, I get a fair number of folks unsubscribing because "the list is of no help to me" or words to that effect. In almost 100% of those cases, it comes from folks who rarely or never post any queries asking for information. Genealogy research can be tedious, time-consuming, and yes even a bit of luck helps as well. I have a genealogical "brick wall" that I have been stuck on for 17 years now, and still do not know his parents' names, let alone anything else about them. Not everything jumps out at you as we would all like to happen. I myself am not well known for my patience (unfortunately), and I have had one lady tell me that "the trouble with most genealogists is that they want EVERYTHING, and they want it NOW." I was kind of unhappy when she told me that, but she was absolutely correct in what she said. Okay, before the list admin shuts us all (including me) off this subject, that is my only comment on the list for this subject. One of my "brick walls" is in the Jones surname, so now I will get back to my 17 year search. My apologies to my fellow List Admin for this being so long AND off topic, but I always have talked too much. :-( David E.
