OK you have his death date? or he dissappears at this time? if you look at later census records it should say where childrens parents born so you should find state he born in via that information. I did that with my JONES and others. It will say they born KY father born? mother born SC so look at 1870 or so for parents birthd data then you can hone in on state at least. Also check if all four children put same state. Alas my 9 did not was it ever fun. then I learned boundaries changed so was same.
