Your right Kathi, I have two Family Trees of supposedly the same family (not Jones, but relation of Jones by marriage), With so many differences it's rediculous! One was sent to me and other I downloaded from Rootsweb or Ancestry.com. By the way thanks for the info on the division of the Jones list. I have Jones', etc.from all over, even England. I'll check your Tree out. Thanks, Deb ( the bad part is that inaccurate/faulty data gets uploaded to the web and becomes set in stone. Too bad.) Kathi Jones-Hudson JONES Listowner
I agree 100%. When I began my Jones search, I started with the Brady line that married into the Joneses. Three persons had already posted some research and I "believed" their information. When my elderly Jones aunt unearthed a family Bible with names and dates, I realized that TOTALLY wrong INFO was posted all over cyberspace. The only person I could convince to CHANGE the bad info turned out to be my 3rd cousin. Nobody else will listen to me. It started with two cousins who were only a year apart in age, had the exact same name, and lived in the same county. Earlier researchers picked the one that was easy to find. Unfortunately, it was the wrong one. I don't think there is any solution except to verify everything we post; nobody can argue with PROOF. I somehow lost the URL for previous list postings, does anyone have it? Thanks Patti
My JONES ancestor was William, of Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire, who married Elizabeth ... , and had two daughters in 1753 and 1755. Any information gratefully received. My wife's grandmother was Gracie Lorene Jones, daughter of Samuel Warner Jones. Descendants of Samuel H. Jones Generation No. 1 1. SAMUEL H. JONES (DANIEL1) was born December 02, 1787 in South Carolina, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH WORTMAN March 29, 1809 in Stokes County, New Jersey, daughter of WILLIAM WORTMAN and CONTENT STOCKTON. She was born March 15, 1789 in New Jersey, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870 in Surry County, North Carolina. Notes for SAMUEL H. JONES: Our first Jones ancestor, Samuel Jones, was said to have been born in South Carolina, according to U.S. Census records. Attempts to link this ancestor to the families in South Carolina have been difficult, though if you follow naming patterns, Daniel Jones would seem a good prospect, a name used in at least two generations. Also, there is a Daniel Jones located in the 1790 Census records for Pendleton County, South Carolina, but not in 1800. I have not located Daniel in 1800 Census records for North Carolina, however, a Daniel Jones is mentioned in Surry County Deed Books in the 1790's. HI, Charles, do you have a Richard that was married to Ameila Hyatt? I belive Amelia would have been born sometime in last quarter of 1700s. Her father moved from Allegany Co MD to Ohio Co VA by 1790, so am not sure where she meet and married Richard Jones. While looking for something totally unrelated on the internet I stumbled onto an excellent new website with much early Jones family data in Virginia (talk about coincidences). This website is to be commended for including sources/citations on all of their family data and leaving 'blank' what is not proven. http://www.virginians.com/ The website contains documented info on several Jones lines in VA: James Jones (c.16401719) of Charles City County left a will in Prince George. His family was in Surry/Sussex. He was possibly a son of David Jones (1594c.1670). Capt. Peter Jones II (-c1727) married Mary Batte and left descendants in Prince George and Amelia. Capt. Richard Jones II (c1660-1747) of Charles City, Prince George, and Brunswick County married Amy Batte and left descendants in Amelia and Nottoway. A Jones Family Digression mentions other Jones families, including Richard Jones I of Charles City, Peter Jones I of Prince George County, Daniel Jones of James City, Phillip Jones of Henrico, Cadwallader Jones, Thomas Jones of Pasbehaighes, Col. John Jones of Dinwiddie and Amelia, and Gilbert Jones of Henrico.
Cheron (?) Ed: As I just wrote to the List, it is unfortunate but once something hits the web it becomes 'set in stone' and is very difficult to get changed/removed unless you've got a very cooperative submitter willing to do that. "Maybe one day someone with enough time and money will challenge the policies that prevent us from correcting our own family data which appear on line" I don't think it's a matter of the policies of Ancestry, Rootsweb, LDS, etc., but a matter of copyright actually. The material submitted is considered to be copywritten by the person submitting it and cannot be changed by anyone else. Just as if that person had written a genealogy book, right or wrong, you couldn't do anything about it. "I shudder to think of future generations trying to untangle the mass of incorrect family data which is currently being offered on the internet." I second this and add that in one family line I've researched a book was written nearly 100 years ago with incorrect information, the author tried later to recant what he said and NO one would listen, they still won't listen so the 'fake' genealogy of this individual is in print, all over the internet, etc., etc. And no matter how many times we tell people this is wrong, they like what it says so they don't believe us. I concur, be careful what you post on the web; be cautious who you give your data to - once it's out of your hands you have no control at all. Deb: Yes - I do have a Jones family tree posted. Haven't updated it for a long, long time though! I think that's one of the problems in getting people to correct their gedcoms and websites. Lots of time & work to do it and no one wants to do it often. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4395/ Click on Rev. Malachi Jones to get to the page where all the surnames are listed. Maybe one of these days I'll have enough time to update the site! The good part of internet genealogy is connecting to other people researching the same family, the bad part is that inaccurate/faulty data gets uploaded to the web and becomes set in stone. Very hard to convince someone that they are in error. Unfortunately other than writing to them and politely asking for a change there's not much we can do about faulty data. Too bad. Sites like Rootsweb, Ancestry, etc. don't take responsibililty for what a submitter posts and you can't make a change in their data, even if grossly wrong, because it's that person's copywritten data. While doing volunteer data entry for the Whittier Area Genealogical Society newspaper database I came across this obituary which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to the Jones surnames that I am researching personally. Nancy Lulu E. Jones Last Rites Set Mrs. Lulu E. Jones, 76, of 422 S. Comstock Ave., died Tuesday (8 Oct) and the funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lanier's Colonial Chapel. Mrs. Jones came to Whittier from Tulsa, Okla., in 1936 with her husband, Ira Jones. He survives her and she is also survived by a son, J. L. Jones of Whittier. Mrs. Jones was a native of Unionville, Mo. Interment will be in Rose Hills Memorial Park. The Whittier News, Whittier, California October 10, 1957
Nancy, Traveling south from Tidewater Virginia around the Dismal Swamp area probably wasn't easy. My guess is your NC family connections in Perquimans/Chowan/Edgecombe/Chatham probably started there. I have a book of NC 1663-1729 abstracts land patents (about 40 different Jones). If you have a specific name, I can check the book for you or anyone else on the list as well. Jones researchers, I am entering my Jones family in hope that someone is related. John Jones was my 3rd great grandfather. His mother was a widow when she m. Richard Fowler in SC c. 1776. John had following brothers & sisters: Mary, Nancy, Jesse & Samuel Jones Richard & Lydia Jones Fowler had following children: Lydia, Joshua, Charity & Elizabeth Fowler. In late 1700's the family moved to what is now Caldwell Co., KY. John m. Mary Story, dau of William & Dorothy Jones Story. Dorothy was dau. of Andrew & Elizabeth Jones. These families all came to KY from SC. John moved with most of his family when the Indian Session in Alabama was complete to what is now Fayette Co., AL in c. 1820. John & Mary Story Jones had following children: Jesse, John S., Nancy, Martha Jane, Mary Ann, Henry Russell, Giles W., James Riley, Lewis Calloway & Andrew Jackson Jones. My brick wall is that I don't know who John's father is. Thanks Doyle D. Jones
Kathi, Do you have your Jones family Tree Posted? I have so little info on my Joneses, I'm ready to adopt! :)Deb
Bill, Would that John Jones' family have a son/grandson/nephew David R Jones b. 1823 Old Pendleton District, SC? And migrated to McMinn/Meigs/Rhea County, TN? I about beat to death from being throw against that proverbial brickwall, looking for this family! Thanks a bunch, Barbara L (Jones) Richardson Bill Cherepy wrote: >>Sorry but I do disagree with you.
