Yes...old subject, new wrinkle. The previous earliest known information on this line came from 1926 booklet on Historic Georgia Families by Rigsby which identified John L. Jones and wife Lucy Taliaferro receiving land via her father's (Dr. John Taliaferro) will next to Joseph Jones in Wilkinson County, GA in 1821/1822. John L. Jones was viewed as being from Surry County, NC or Virginia. It has since been learned that John L. Jones was brother to Joseph (mentioned above) and Thomas and Hiram Jones who were in Wilkinson County by the 1820 census. The following 2 recently discovered queeries shed new light on the origins of the Jones brothers. The DAR Magazine of July 1916, page 41, #4462, Lingo. "As I am the great granddaughter of Elijah Lingo who married Mary Hardin Taliaferro....Mary Hardin Taliaferro was the daughter of Dr. John and Mary (Hardin) Taliaferro of Surry Co., NC. Elija drew a bounty land on Fishing Creek, Baldwin County, GA, where he died in 1822. Mary H. Lingo died in 1826. From Mrs. S. J. Jones. The DAR Magazine of December 1916 Vol. XLIX #6, page 394, query 4859, Jones-Hardin. John L. Jones Jr. of Morgan District Wilkes County NC was b. December 8, 1776 and married Lucy, daughter of Dr. John and Mary (Hardin) Taliaferro. He was the son of John L. Jones who was living in Morgan District Wilkes County NC in 1790 according to the census with 4 males under 16 and two females in his family. John Taliaferro was living in the same District with 3 females in his family in 1790. His wife Mary Hardin was the daughter of Henry Hardin who was also living there with 1 male under 16 and 3 females in 1790." ----- I've looked all through the GA Archives and am unable to tie the land in Baldwin County to any of the Georgia lotteries, etc. I believe that his land may have been in Hancock County, GA which later became Baldwin County. There are no records of John Taliaferro receiving a land grant in GA so I assume he must have purchased or settled on it. Fishing Creek in Baldwin County is near the land that Madison Monroe Jones obtained from William F. Jones (originally obtained from John Gabriel Jones) in the late 1870's. Does anyone have any insights on John L. Jones, Sr. in the Wilkes County, NC area in 1790 and before? Thank you. Chris Jones Roswell, GA
Wilma... my 2nd great grandfather, Abraham Jones was around 1778 or maybe around 1793 in wythe county, VA. He married Mary Polly Kyle in 1807 in Botetourt, Va. They and family left for Jackson County, Missouri in 1854. I believe some of their daughters were stayed behind. I really need information on Abraham and his parents... this is my worst brick wall. I have a Sophronia Jones in my tree also. She was born 2-15-1799 to Godfrey and Sally ? Jones . One of 13 children. Family record has Godfrey born in Vt. 2-14-1776 . A son Ira Walter Jones b. 5-5-1794 also married a Sophronia Islam in Oswego Co. N. Y.some time after 1862 (2nd. wife ) . Maybe its not such an unusual name after all .
Hi Donna, and thanks for the information. I have never heard of the name Sophronia either. I have a Sofronia Covalt b. 1830 (probably in Tyler Co., WV) which borders Harrison County, WV and a Josiah Jones in Taylor County, which also borders Harrison County, WV. I've seen Josiah frequently, but Sophronia/Sofronia, etc. is not a common name. Was Sophronia a common name back then? I don't know who my Jones' ancestors were but I was told that one of them was a Governor, she thought in VA, before the family moved on to TN then into IL then (KS? at least a few of them went that way) and back to KY. I only know about the part where they were living in IL on to present day. The first one I can start with is Wiley B.H. Jones who served in the Civil War and was born in middle TN about 1815. I live in Darke Co. Our son/wife lived in Erlan and just bought in Ft. Thomas. This is a community for those who love the old. Some work needs to be done on the house, but much. The major project will to be to reopen and reproduce from old oak the open staircase. Behind it hides a beautiful 9ft double pain stained glass with a semi circle stained above it. This beats my 6 foot double pain, I still have the older home and more stained glass. I will ck the directories for you and see what can be found. You are like me the d/c should be at the OHS in Col unfortunately this would not be listed on line due to the date. I ckd for my M. GRIFFITHS with no luck there so that means I have to work through Hamilton Co. I will, however, keep your letter. I am trying to gather my things for my nxt OHS trip. I will be making several in the future. I am limited timewise visits with my dad. I try to do other things in the area to fill the rest of the day. If there is a d/c for Steven in 1911 I will grab a copy and let you know. It may not be until after 30 Mar. I am swamped here and then I dog sit 22 Mar for a couple getting married. I don't travel far when I have dogs here. If you prefer I could include a search for you Stephen with my Mary GRIFFITHS, but they said they did it when they had time as they get numerous requests. Unlike Cin we have had snow, over 4? inches so far. I can't remember what my yard looks like. I think we made out better than the people with the ice. The snow will do a great deal of good in getting rid of insects deep below. Hope is in the horizon, we are told near mid 50's tomorrow and 60's in Cin so it should be a good day to get to the library. I hope. Pat I will also take your letter along and see what can be found. I have finally given up on an appointment for a d/c in Cin. The earliest I would be able to get one would be June. Since I only have one I will just request it by mail. I was really hoping this woman died on a visit to Jackson Co OH. I have her obit from Jackson/and that is what I am after in Cin from the library. I found it listed in the Post. I know they lived in Cleves, and am hoping for some descendants there. I have found some of the GRIFFITHS line in the Cin/NKY area. ~pat~ > -----Original Message----- > From: Carol or Cliff Jones [mailto:Jonesy6iron@earthlink.net] > Sent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 11:40 PM > To: JONES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [Jones] Steve Jones
Hello, I have not been able to get much on the marriage of my grandparents. I thought I would toss this your way and if you happen to spot on of these names while you were looking this weekend,...well, just jot it down and toss it back at me next week. Here is what I have: FRANCIS ANDREW JONES, might have gone by just ANDREW since his father was FRANCIS also: ( Father from Penmaenmawr, Wales) b: 12-31-1891 - Lithonia, Georgia d: 6-30-1922 - L.A. California Married: ROSE ELIZABETH TEEKEN on April 1, 1916. Cinn, Ohio b: 10-25-1895 Louisville, Kentucky - (need birth records) d: 7-25-1974 Jefferson City, Missouri ROSE's father was GEORGE TEEKEN (Germany), mother was Teresa Marie HENSCHER ---- Step-mother was ROSA KUPPER/COOPER In the 1910 miracode ROSE ELIZABETH TEEKEN was named ROSA JR. 14 ( haven't figured out why yet!) You will see the TEEKEN name in Louisville, but if you see it in Cincinnati, I would like to know. I believe GEORGE TEEKEN had a BAKERY in Louisville. I know how confusing it can be with others familys, but if you see anything on this JONES/TEEKEN marriage, please pass it on to me. THANK YOU in advance! Pat Jones Smith St. Louis, MO...USA
