    3. My elusive ancestor was Jackson Allen Jones, date of birth or death unknown. His youngest child was born in Georgia in 1872. He was married at least twice, with children from both marriages. The 1880 census of Bartow County, Georgia shows Celia Jones as head of household and a widow. North Carolina is shown as the birthplace of Jackson Allen Jones. Children from the first marriage included a John S. Jones and William Perry Jones. William Perry married JoAnna McCravey in Bartow County, Ga in the early 1880's. Family legend is that Jackson's father was known as "Billy Pap" Jones. Billy Pap was supposed to have been a judge during the Civil War. Legend is that Jackson had at least four brothers, Jesse, Joe, Darrel and John. Any help is appreciated. RoseMary

    3. I don't see the connection, but it is very interesting to have "our" JONES families with similar stats: My (involves some Quaker search) JONES-FINNEY FAMILY, [James Jones b:1782 of ILL d: 1 June 1848 married Mary Jones b: 1773 of ILL D: 1 APR 1867 (or: 4 Mar 1867)] Their child: NACY HARRISON JONES b: 19 Oct 1817 IN., m: 1838 to RACHAEL FINNEY b: 27 Mar 1821 IN. * * * * Below is copied a note from Norma M. (Rayl) Rock: Parents of Nacy Harrison Jones are James and Mary Jones. They were from Illinois. Nacy Harrison Jones was born in Parke co IN. (My father was born there, too). After his marriage, Nacy and his family moved to Douglas co, IL, and in 1850 he moved to Willmington, Will co, IL. His father James Jones had died 1 Jun 1848 in his 66th year, this making his calculated year of birth 1782. Mary (Jones) died 1 Apr 1867 in her 94th year, making her year of birth cal 1773. I do not know where they are buried. I wonder is Nacy moved back to Will co to be with his mother. According to their death records, Mary would have been nine years older than James! The first wife of N. H. Jones, Rachel, died 21 Apr 1860 in Illinois leaving 7 children. Nacy remarried 11 Jun 1860 to Margaret and she had 7 children all b in IL. That means she helped to rear 14 children. * * * * Children by Rachael : Oliver Hazard Perry JONES born 1840, married Catherine Elizabeth (Kate) HOOD. 2. Hello Karli. There is always hope! There is a record dated 29 April 1768 in which the then governor of NC (Tyron) grants 200 acres of land to Wylie Jones, Solomon Alston and Joseph Montfort. This land was in Mechlenburg Co, on both side of "2nd Broad River". This was a very difficult time for those in NC. The western settlers were rebelling against the eastern "establishment" and was about to lead to the Battle of Alamance where over 200 western settlers, called Regulators, where killed. Two key political leaders on the "eastern" side were an Allen Jones, and a Willie Jones. It would not surprise me that Willie, Wyllie, Wylie where of the same group. I have abstracted the Colonial Records of the state of NC, 1662 - 1776, for the JONES SURNAME, and this research is available at the Joseph Wheeler Jones Memorial Library, Danville, KY. This would give you a chronological abstract of the JONES surname in NC and some of the historical content which often helps in sorting out the various JONES groups. Hope this is helpful. Jerry.

    2. Hello Lee Anne. The Joseph Wheeler Jones Memorial Library has an extensive collection on the JONES SURNAME including SC, GA, and AR. There is a complete set of the publication called JONES JOURNEYS which covers a wide area of information on the JONES SURNAME for these states. My newsletter, The Jones Genealogist, has a focus on VA, KY, WALES, ENGLAND, and a historical perspective on the JONES SURNAME. The library is physically located in Danville, KY and is open at no charge to the genealogist. You may wish to check our website: thegoldenlionbb.com. Hope this is helpful. Jerry

    2. Hello Louise. I have attempted to establish a genealogical research center for the JONES surname. There is a JONES SURNAME MUSEUM, and a research library which contains mostly research on the JONES surname. There are also seminars available to help those who are "stuck" with their "brick walls". I also publish a JONES SURNAME newsletter called The Jones Genealogist. The center is located in Danville, KY and is open to the genealogist for independent research. You may wish to check our web site: thegoldenlionbb.com. Hope this is helpful. Jerry.

    3. My elusive Jones was born in VA abt 1750. Don't know what part of VA. His first name is JAMES, making things more difficult. Even worse, he married a Sarah JOHNSON! They were in Orange Co NC by 1774 where a son James Jr was born. James Jr grew up to be a preacher, most likely Baptist, and married Naomi Baker. We believe he had 16 kids and was married twice. He died before 1850 and there is nothing to show the names of his children except one, Calvin S B Jones, born in 1822.... and that is my GGgrandfather, who lived in Chatham Co NC. I welcome ANY leads at all to finding these James Joneses and their children. <sigh> Nancy dotsicle

    3. My line is Frances Jones father John Jones. This what do know Southside Virginia Families" by John Bennett Boddie - page 228 states Elizabeth Frances Jones, daughter of John Jones, married Joel Halbert abt 1740. From Old Rappahannock & Essex Co. Marriages - Book D27, page 71. John Jones is said to born c 1700 d c 1795, I can find not record for him. Frances is said to born c 1700/05 unknown death date Caroline Co., Va Order Bk 1755-1763 p 272. Date 1762 On motion of Frances Halbert, widow and relict of Joel Halbert dec'd, administrator on the estate, is granted to the said Frances Halbert, she having been given bond according to law. p. 491 Date:? Frances Halbert qualified (their mother) to wards William, John, Elizabaeth, Martha, Frances and Joel. Order Bk 1764-67, p 72, March Court 1764 William, John & Elizabeth Halbert with the approbation of the Court made choice of Frances Halbert as their guardian. [Making choice signifies they were of the age of 14 or above but under 21]. p. 161. June Court 1764 On motion of Frances Halbert, she appointed guardian of Martha, Frances and Joel Halbert, orphans of Joel Halbert, dec'd and the said Frances Acknowledged a bond for same. (These three then were under the age of 14.) Okay, if William was born Oct 14, 1744, in 1764 he wouldn't have been a minor long. And if John WAS the oldest, as some records have shown, and older than William,he would have been older than 21 at the date of these guardian bonds, and would then not have needed a guardian. This means that William was over 14 and his siblings were under 14 making them minors. Janet Ariciu
