    1. Re: Migration of Joneses
    2. Hello Gina. A JONES marrying a JONES, how lucky can one get! This is fairly common among our JONES clans. At any rate, there is a "BIG PICTURE" to JONES migration into the Valley of the Ohio. In the early 1700s, the French and British had differing views as to who owned and controlled the land west of the colonies and south of the French settlements. Attempts to settle this dispute was made by a treaty in 1748 known as the treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle. It basically left in question the control of land between the northwestern lakes to the Cumberland Mountains, and from the heads of the Ohio to the Mississippi. Interestingly, they seemed to ignore the fact that this land was undisputedly the dominion of the North American Indian. A discussion of this can be found in a book called Valley of the Ohio, by Mann Butler, and published by Kentucky Historical Society in 1971. Competition between the English and the French was the driving force for most of the early migration. The colonies were essentially used by the British government to expand their influence into the western lands. European peoples suffering religious persecution or economic oppression; including German, Welsh, Scotch-Irish, and English, found little available near the coastal areas of the colonies. They were forced to migrate into the western parts of these colonies. Early migration included the Conococheaque Valley of Pennsylvania, the Potomac of Maryland, and the Shenandoah of Virginia, all borderland to the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains. In 1747, the British government granted a petition to a group of leading Virginians (of whom Laurence Washington was one), approving 500,000 acres of land in the Ohio Valley to be located between the Monongahela and Kanawha rivers. This was to induce settlers to occupy the eastern part of the Ohio Valley. The British government then allowed the governor of VA to grant land, and in the course of a very few years, granted hundreds of thousands of acres of land, the largest being for 800,000 acres, to the Loyal Land Company of VA. (Dr. Thomas Walker being an important member). A discussion of this is found: Rise of The American People, 1750 - 1775, in The Filson Club History Quarterly, Vol. 31, No. 4, 1957. A helpful booklet is: The Ohio Company of Virginia 1748 - 1798, by Samuel Wilson, offprinted from Kentucky Law Journal, Vol. XIV, Nos. 3, and 4., 1926. As you might guess, this led to open conflict, The French and Indian War of 1754 - 1763, as we record it. [Interestingly, it took more lives than our War of Independence.] An excellent reference to this is The French and Indian War 1754 - 1763, The Imperial Struggle for North America, by Seymour Schwartz, Castle Books, 1928. The face of settlement change, with the Treaty of Paris, 1763. France surrendered all her possessions east of the Mississippi River, with the exception of New Orleans. However, the Indians remained hostile. Multiple large and small "land companies" tried to obtain claims to this vast territory. One of particular interest to you is that of Richard Henderson of NC. In 1764, he started a land company known as Transylvania Company, and hired a poor fellow named Daniel Boone to act as agent. Webster Co., KY and its town of Dixon, were initially part of Henderson Co., KY. A discussion of this can be found: A Topographical Description of The Western Territory, by Gilbert Imlay, published 1797, reprinted Economic Classics, New York, 1969. As you might imagine, there were a number of JONES families involved in many of these land schemes and migration groups. Henderson's group centered in Bute Co. NC where he grew up. This was to become Granville, NC. A large number of JONES families were from this area. A helpful text is An Abstract of NC Wills, by Fred A. Olds, Southern Book Co., 1954. It is organized by NC counties, and has a listing of JONES families who left wills in NC for this early time period beginning ca. 1760. Another helpful text for general reading is: The American Heritage Historical Atlas of United States History, by McGraw-Hill Book Co., and American Heritage Publishing Co, NY. Please note that a copy of these references are available at the Joseph Wheeler Jones Memorial Library, Danville, KY. See website: thegoldenlionbb.com. Hope this is helpful, Jerry. 3. Debra: William H. and his father Albert born in England could be listed on Free BMD. Not all the English vitals have been transcribed but thousands are. You will have to search county by county for possible matches unless you know where in England they came from. Jones will yield more hits than can be displayed otherwise. If you should get a match, you can order the certificates from the Gov't Records Office via credit card on line. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ Also, try a look-up request to an Ancestry subscriber for a check of NY Passenger Lists 1851-1891 or better still, if you can make the time, do one of the 14 day free trials to access the databases yourself. Try the census again but look for variations of the names such as Bill, Henry William, Mary, Agusta Maria, Marie, Janes and wild card searches. My own Francis became Frank on one census and due to the gov't scribbles over the names on one census year, Hubby's grandparents' surname is totally alien on the Ancestry search index to what it really was. Happy 4th! 3. That's pretty good, and yes it is true. How are you doing? I am really bummed. We had all of the family here for Ken's birthday, and Renee and Bill informed us they are moving back to PA. We knew they wanted to, but they had to wait for their lease to expire, and that was in 18 months. Now they are leaving in Sept. I am so upset, we are losing our granddaughter, and won't see her for who knows how long. Not a bit happy at all. Hope you have a fun 4th, and be safe!!! 1. Re: [Jones] Re: Jones Research References
    2. Hello Pam. Yes, there are numerous references to the JONES surname in Mississippi. There are at least 17 references to the JONES surname for MS in JONES JOURNEYS alone. Perhaps it would be helpful to review some references and sources for all those researching the JONES surname. First is a reference entitled: Genealogies In The Library of Congress, A Bibliography. Edited by Marion J. Kaminkow, Magna Carta Book Co., Baltimore, MD, 1972. This gives a listing of the JONES surname groups that have been submitted to the Library of Congress, the title and family recorded. There are reference to resources for the JONES surname from all over the US, Wales, Ireland, etc. Many states are represented. A similar reference is titled: American and English Genealogies In The Library of Congress, Genealogical Publishing Co., Much of the genealogical information written by those interested in JONES surname has been place in the Library of Congress. Second, is a series of texts called: The Compendium of American Genealogies, in seven volumes. It compiles many of the JONES surname, but has been given a "bad rap" due to lack of real documentation. However, if you family is recorded, it would give you at least a starting point. The third reference is the collection called JONES JOURNEYS, published from 1972 until 1992. It is a collection of different JONES family information from all around the US, but little on those outside the US. The fourth is a collection of JONES information abstracted by Caroline Cunningham, starting in 1965. It can be researched at the East Carolina University special collections, Greenville, NC. It is in four volumes and deals mostly with NC, VA and some TN references. A fifth reference is The Jones Genealogist, a newsletter now published for the JONES surname. All of the above references, abstracted for the JONES surname can be found at the Joseph Wheeler Jones Memorial Library, Danville, KY. [see web site thegoldenlionbb.com ] My personal collection of genealogical research contains over 400 notebooks on the JONES SURNAME. This collection is available to the genealogical researcher free of charge with advance notice. These references should provide a back drop to those researching the JONES surname. Hope this is helpful. Jerry. The Jones Genealogist.

    2. Hello Margie. Wayne Co., KY was formed 1800 from land that earlier was part of both Pulaski and Cumberland Cos. It is now bordered on the south by the state of Tennessee, and the southeast corner is part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The county seat is located at Monticello. There are a fair number of JONES families in this area. These family groups are discussed in Jones Journeys, Vol. VII, no. 7.4, pp 276 - 277, and Vol V., no. 6, p. 106. The will of a James Jones, Sr. of Wayne Co. KY, 1844, list a number of children, including both a Westley, and an Elizabeth JONES. I would suggest you try and locate a copy of this will. A New Bethel Church is located just above a settlement known as Parnell on KY HWY 92 I would try and find out the denomination of this church since many of the early families moved together as a specific congregation. You might begin by contacting the public library in Monticello. These folks usually know the local genealogist in the area, or know of the genealogical materials in the library.
