    1. Stephen & Hiram Jones in 1850 Census
    2. Spike Jones
    3. After searching for a couple of years I finally found my Stephen & Hiram Jones in 1850 in Clay County,Illinois. I had been doing my searches in the counties around Lawrence & Carter counties in Kentucky since that is where they were in 1840 & 1860. I finally broadened my search and there they were hiding up north. Here is the information for anyone researching this line: 1850 Illinois Census, Clay County, Clay & Richard District 14, August 29th, Ancestry page 21 of 103 135/137 Jones, Stephen 51 M Farmer $300 Ky , Nancy 29 F Ky , Hiram 17 M Farmer Ky , Rosannah 06 F Ky , Andrew T. 04 M Ky , Levi 01 M Ky Living nearby are Erwins from Ky. and there are lots of them around Stephen later in Carter County. 1. Stephen Jones - 1750 St. Mary's, Md.
    2. Spike Jones
    3. Chris, If my information is correct Stephen Jones born 1750 in St. Mary's, Md., is the father of my GG Grandfather Stephen Jones it would be great if you could find information on his birth. Records show the older Stephen settling in what would become Harlan County, Kentucky in about 1792 and the younger Stephen being born there in 1793. Most researchers of this line claim Ambrose Jones of NC is the older Stephens father but he would be the only one of 10 children who wasn't born in NC or Virginia. I have been told that the court house that held the records for that period was destroyed during the Civil War. If you think you can help I would be happy to send you a copy of Jones file or any information you might need. Thank you, Larry Jones Doing Genealogy research on the following families: Coffey, Cremeans, Denne, Hentsch, Jones, Murcer, Myers, Ragan, Scheppman, Schultz, Semones, Seydel, Smith & Stumpf. 1. Walter Jones-Logan County, Kentucky
    2. Looking for information regarding Dr. Walter Jones, the man who was probably the first medical doctor in Logan County, Kentucky. I am especially interested in the possibility that he might have had a son (Howard/Harwood/John G. H. Jones) who married Elizabeth Yost (daughter of Jacob Yost) in Logan County, Kentucky. Is anyone researching that family? Thanks, Tom D.

    3. >I would be interested, as well-- but --don't know if you are talking about >an "email meeting" or a real travel to attendance. In getting info from the Joseph Wheeler Jones Memorial Library, Danville, KY. -- I have visited the site and it does not have anything available on line. Assume I would have to travel to KY and am unable to do so. Would love to find out about the 1835 Will by Ned Jones at Buck Horn Creek, NC to see if there are any clues-- but would have to spend hours at each of the 5 or 6 counties that involves. --& can't get there either. Have tried using the NC rootsweb message line (like this Jones one)-- but to no avail. Are there ways to gather this information long distance, as it seems no one else is researching my line. Also-- notice that more and more of the sites which previously were free have been combined with Ancestry.com and are now available only to members. it is much more difficult to find many "free sites". Can someone provide lists of the free sites?? Thanks, Karli Dye

    2. I am interested in learning more - my brick wall for over 2 years is Micajah Jones, b 1797 somewhere in South Carolina and d 1885 in Henry County, GA. It is hard for me to travel - where would you have this get together, and would it be possible to publish notes, etc., of it? Or maybe an on line chat...Labor Day is definitely out for me, though, we have a previous committment. Kathy [email protected]

    1. My Brick Wall...Harvey and Martha (ROSSER) JONES & a JONES/JEFFRIES Connection
    2. Stacey Maddox
    3. Count me in with the Brick Wall Demolition, too. Recent posts of the "Brick Walls" and "Virginia JONESES with mention of the JEFFRIES connection" have peaked my interest. I am looking for the families of my 3GGrandparents, Harbert Leander "Harvey" JONES and Martha ROSSER. They were both natives of Dinwiddie County (and/or Petersburg), Virginia and came to Greene County, Ohio sometime between 1838 - 1841. I believe they may have traveled to Greene County with the following families... William BOWERS md. Rebecca STUDEVANT Shedrick JEFFRIES md. Mary EDWARDS James HATHCOCK md. Mary STUDEVANT Jordan JEFFRIES md. Martha C. HATHCOCK All four of the couples listed above were on the same page as my 3GGrandparent's marriage record. Even though Harvey and Martha were obviously "together" before, they were officially married in 1841 once they arrived in Greene County, Ohio. Winfield STUDEVANT/STURDIVANT (of Greensville County, Virginia) proved her/their ages. According to one website, Winfield STURDIVANT's parents were Robert STURDIVANT and Mary JONES, but I haven't proven if they were related to my Jones line. My JONESES lived near and intermarried with JEFFRIES families, but it was years later (1840's+) and in Greene County, Ohio; however, both families came from the Virginia/North Carolina borders. This JONES line also happens to be my Brick Wall. My major sticking point is that I don't live near there, so most of my research as been online and I am unsure if I should look for them as "white", "free person of color", etc. The 1850 census is the first census that I have found them in. They were listed as "mulatto", but in all subsequent records, they were listed as "white" (with the exception of Civil War enlistment papers when at least two of them were listed as "dark complexion"). Family history says my 3GGrandfather, Harvey JONES, was 1/4 Indian (some relatives say Cherokee, others say Miami, but it is most likely Saponi or other Eastern Siouan). Harvey JONES (b. 1812) and Martha ROSSER (b. 1815) were the parents of 11 children: 1) David; b. ABT 1833 in Virginia; married Anna Margaret CORDEL, daughter of Carter CORDEL and Martha UNKNOWN 2) John; b. 1837 in (Petersburg or Roanoke or Greensville County - all three places were listed in his military papers) Virginia; married Susan Caroline DAY, daughter of Dudley DAY and Mary Ann JEFFERYS [Susan's first husband was John B. BALLARD.] 3) William Braderick; b. 1838 in Parkersburg, (West) Virginia; married Mary Jane GUY, daughter of Thomas GUY and Adaline BURNETT, granddaughter of Vines GUY and Elizabeth JEFFRIES 4) Benjamin Franklin; b. 1844 in Greene County, Ohio; married Julia ALDRIDGE, daughter of Abraham ALDRIDGE and Sarah THORNBURG 5) Alexander(ia) "Alex"; b. 1846 in Greene County, Ohio; married (1) Phoebe Jane HOLDERMAN, daughter of Christopher HOLDERMAN and Barbara Ellen FINK, and (2) Martha Jane DEARTH, daughter of Jesse DEARTH and Permelia GUSTIN 6) James E.; b. 1848 in Greene County, Ohio; married Viola ROBINSON, daughter of Hary ROBINSON and Martha WEAVER 7) Sarah J.; b. 1851 in Greene County, Ohio; married Joseph "Holmes" HANKINSON, son of James HANKINSON and Adeline THOMPSON 8) Caroline M.; b. 1853 in Greene County, Ohio; married Abraham SIMPSON, son of David SIMPSON and Catherine KIMMEL 9) Harvey Leander; b. 1855 in Greene County, Ohio; married (1) Mary "Martha" FORD, daughter of John P. FORD and Mary C. HUGHES, and (2) Alice PARKER, daughter of UNKNOWN 10) Virginia "Jennie"; b. 1857 in Ohio; did not marry 11) Laura Emma; b. 1862 in Ohio; married Elza Robbin BEATY, son of Elias BEATY and Elizabeth ROBBIN Starting in the 1870 census, the Jones family began spreading out from Greene County throughout the Miami Valley area (Greene, Montgomery, Shelby, Clark, Clinton, Highland, Miami, and Champaign Counties of Ohio). Any tips/information would be GREATLY appreciated. Stacey

    2. Hello Ron. Would you believe that my JONES family has lived in Clark Co., KY for almost 200 years. This is my childhood home and a few generations of my grandfathers are buried here. I know a great deal about the JONES families that resided here. Have you located Hiram in the 1860 census of KY. It list each family member by name, age, and the place of birth of the head of household. His children should be listed. There are two Hirams in the 1850 census, and this group is part of my family. They originally settled on the waters of "four mile creek" and were great adventures, moving a total of 8 miles in roughly 200 years! (From their farm to the town of Winchester, KY) Hiram was the son of John Jones, "the baby brother" to my Nicholas Jones. Nicholas was born in Caroline Co., VA 1762 and moved from Spotsylvania Co., VA to join other family members at the South Elkhorn Baptist Church then in Fayette Co., KY. I would suspect we are "cousins". I have a copy of the 1860 census for Clark Co., but I cannot put my finger on it at present. I will try to locate it. Hope this is helpful. Jerry. (Presently living in Danville, KY approximately 50 miles from Winchester. See, we JONESES of Clark Co., KY are adventurous! )

    3. Does anyone on the list have an idea as to who Ann/Anne Jones'/James' husband and parents might have been. I'm looking for candidates. My great-grandmother's (Leona Montgomery) death certificate says that her parents from in GA and were Dock Montgomery and Laura Ann Jones. I found their GA marriage certificate. I also found Laura and her mother Ann Jones in the 1850 census in GA. The 1850 census said that mother Ann Jones was age 50, born about 1800 in NC. The census listed two daughters, Laura Ann (age 19) and Martha E. (age 16) Jones. In the 1840 census, there was also an unnamed older son. In the 1850 census, Ann is listed between Hiram Montgomery, age 54, born in SC and John Davis (age 22) and Elizabeth Davis (age 24), both born in GA. I may have more information if you think you might know who this Ann Jones' husband and parents were.

    3. I am all for the Demolition of Jones Brick Walls. Please include our Northerners. My James A. Jones was born in NY October 11, 1831. In 1850 census he was working as a farm worker for Philander Hale in Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY. By 1860 he had married Philander and Clara Hatch Hale's daughter Clarissa and had three children: Ida Jones (1854-1923) who married Rollin Hale (her first cousin, son of Philander's brother William); Francis R. Jones (1857-1867) and Margaret Jones (1866-1942). In the 1860 census Clarissa is living with her parents and the two older children in Warsaw. James is not to be found. Francis and James are buried in the Warsaw Cemetery and James died Nov. 14, 1866 in Buffalo, NY. I would really like to find his parents, as well as birth and marriage records. After his death Clarissa remarried and moved to Washington State along with her daughters Ida and Margaret.
