Hi List, I am new to the Jones list despite my mother being a Jones. I descend from the Autauga County, Alabama Redmond Jones line. I have not had an opportunity to research the parentage of Redmond. For those who descend from Redmond, email me if you wish to exchange information but please change the subject line. I am trying to establish my ancestry on paternal side to George Dawson and Hannah Jones. This couple married 30 Oct 1797 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. George Dawson is listed in William Jennings' tax lists for Shenandoah County in 1800. The people listed in William Jennings' tax list live in Page County, Virginia today. George Dawson died before 7 Aug 1815. Shenandoah County court records indicate Harrison Wood became guardian to youngest son George Dawson on this date. George is the son of George and Henrietta Dawson. Orphan George married Jane Fielding 20 Jul 1836 in Page County. Jane's brother James M. Fielding married Susan Angeline Dawson 23 Jan 1849. I descend from this couple. Susan Angeline Dawson appears to be born out of wedlock to a Catherine Dawson. I am trying to establish Catherine Dawson as a daughter to George and Henrietta; however, her birth date per one source is 1790, a good seven years prior to George Dawson and Hannah Jones marriage. Anyone familiar with this particular Hannah Jones?
Yesterday, I asked for information on a Peleg Jones; today, I found out that I was given bad info and I ask you to forget my request and to please accept my apologies. Karl [email protected]
Peleg Jones, b. bef 1760 in RI, was my great, great, great, great grandfather. I descend from him through his daughter, Betsy (Elizabeth, Mary, ???) who married Edward Talbot. I believe Edward was living with his mother in Dutchess County, NY in 1800; Edward and Betsy lived im Madison Co., NY. I would appreciate any info on Peleg. Thank you. Karl MacEachron Fresno CA

Hi, Since your 2nd ggFather lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, it might be possible that the Cumberland that he is talking about might be Cumberland County, North Carolina which encompases Fayetteville, Spring Lake, Ft Bragg and Pope. Maybe that is a good place to start. I live in Spring Lake, so that is why I thought that it could possible be in North Carolina. Let me know if there is anything that you might want looked up at our library. The only thing that I can think of is the city directories to look at. Thanks, Anna > [Original Message] > From: Richard W Jones <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 9/12/2005 10:55:01 AM > Subject: [Jones] JONES / in Cumberland (?) > > I am looking for my 2nd great-grandfather, JONES, who came to Greensboro, > North Carolina from a place called Cumberland. Richard, I would start with the closest Cumberland and work my way outward in concentric circles. Marleen Van Horne
September 12, 2005 Monday afternoon Dotsicle, Thank you. That is a most helpful lead. I'm very appreciative. 1. Can you tell me how I might proceed in gathering more about Jefferson Jones origins in Cumberland County, NC without having to travel to the county seat there? Even if I could, I was unable to find him on the early census of Cumberland County, NC which I was able to borrow through my local public library-loan service here in Winston-Salem, NC. 2. I will be happy to share any info I've uncovered that might be helpful to you and/or the Jones family mentioned in your reply (the family of Laura Jones' brother-in-law). Would it be possible for me to e-mail this family directly, or otherwise leave address and the nature of my inquiry, through you? [email protected] (336) 760-2713 Thanks sincerely, Richard Weston Jones Winston-Salem, NC On Mon, 12 Sep 2005 08:16:58 -0700 (PDT) Nancy Jones <[email protected]> writes: > On the 1850 Guilford Co census, in the column where > County and State of Birth are written, it says > "Cumberland NC" for Jefferson and "Davidson NC" for > his wife's mother. I am looking for my 2nd great-grandfather, JONES, who came to Greensboro, North Carolina from a place called Cumberland. "Cumberland" was the only word he used to designate his origin on his son's birth certificate. I have no other reference to the place he might have been born. He was Jefferson (T. ?) Jones, born Jun 11, 1812 at a place called Cumberland. He married Isabella Henderson in 1820 in Guilford County, NC. They both remained in Guilford County, NC and are buried there. There are about 40 listed places in the United States, Canada, and England with the name Cumberland (which includes counties, towns, and centers). Can anyone suggest how I might go about narrowing my search? Richard Winston-Salem, NC
Is anyone researching this family who immigrated 8 June 1850 into NY from Belfast? Anne Jane Jones was age 43 at the time with children Ellen Charlotte, age 13, Mary Martha age 11, Robert, 18, and William 16. Older son John George Jones (b. 1823 Ireland) was already in Buffalo. He married 1849 Sarah E. Maharg and in 1859 migrated to Wayne County, IL with 5 children and boy named James Wright. I have family info. on son Robert F. and his family, and John G. and his family. Robert F. (b. abt 1828-1829 Ireland) had wife Mary A. with children Ann J., William H., Hannah, Mary, Harriet "Hattie", and George F. Jones. They stayed in Buffalo, NY. I am descendant of John G. Jones. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Janis (Jones) H. in NC
On the 1850 Guilford Co census, in the column where County and State of Birth are written, it says "Cumberland NC" for Jefferson and "Davidson NC" for his wife's mother. This is a pretty good indication that the "Cumberland" to which Jefferson refers on his son's birth certificate is Cumberland the COUNTY. Although I'm a Jones, this family is related to me only through Laura Jones' brother-in-law....... dotsicle

Kathy, Thank You. Every bit helps as it helps to eleminate people with the same name. Jenny
Is there anyone researching in any of the areas in the eastern United States named Cumberland? I am interested in the family JONES. Richard Winston-Salem, NC
Jenny, I have a Mary "Polly" Jones in my line. Her father is John A Jones (b February 25, 1879). Don't know if this helps. Kathy
I still cannot find the exact parents of Mary "Polly" Jones that married John Humphrey; nor Jane Jones that married David Humphrey. They are both listed on 1810 Census .....believe at least one John Jones is father of one of them, but which John Jones? Thank You for any info., or suggestions. Jenny Oldham
I am posting this again in the hopes of finding more info: I am trying to locate info on my g-g-grandmother Christiana Jones, b. about 1832 in possibly Alabama. All I have to go on is a marriage license from Nov. 1863 (Pocahontas, Randolph Co., AR) in which 31 year old Christiana Jones married William Samuel Fredrick. She died sometime before 1872, when William Samuel Fredrick married for the 3rd time. Christiana had 1 daughter Mary Ellen Fredrick. In census records Mary Ellen always has her mother's birthplace listed as Alabama. There were two Jones men who lived in the same area as William Samuel Fredrick in 1861, and the 3 men all joined Captain Ballard's 30 Day Volunteers Infantry on Nov. 17, 1861 together. The two Jones men were George M. Jones (Corporal) and Joseph B. Jones (Sergeant). They appear to have been from Bladen, North Carolina. I am wondering whether Christiana Jones was related to the two Jones men. 33 years of age was quite old for a first marriage; perhaps she was a widow of one of those men or a relative? Any help would be greatly appreciated, since Christiana is one of the big unknowns in my research. She lived such a short time after her marriage, and I have no idea where she was living at the time of her death. Merrie
Several of the courthouse records are completely destroyed as a result of Katrina. The catastrophe of Katrina has taught us all valuable lessons. One thing we can do for ourselves is scan all of our important documents, papers and pictures (copy driver's license, SS card, deeds, wills, vehicle titles and etc.). Burn EVERYTHING to CD's and put everything into CD cases. Give copies to different relatives, put a copy in a safe or safety deposit box. If you know someone who does not have a computer or scanner offer to do their documents. Although most people will never be in a hurricane there are other natural disasters such as a fire or tornado which can occur. Patti
My husband and I both have a Samuel Jones born about 1780 in our direct line. We don't have any leads as to the parents of either Samuel. My Samuel was born about 1780 in SC. He married Lucinda Fields about 1807. He was living in Maury Co, TN in 1808 when his oldest son (Aquila) was born and in Blount Co, AL in 1818 when another son (Eli) was born. Samuel and Lucinda were part of Robertson's Colony and in Texas by Mid February of 1838. Samuel died after 1850 in Milam Co, TX. This family is covered in XII of the Robertson's Colony Papers. Samuel and Lucinda's know children were: Aquilla; Mary "Polly"; Darkus; Mahala Jane (my line); Sarah Louisa; Eli; Wylie; David; and Delila Ann. My husbands Samuel Jones was living in Pitt Co, NC in 1830 and by the time the 1840 census was taken the family was in Anderson Co, TN. This Samuel died about 1843 in Anderson Co, TN. Samuel married Jemima Smith about 1813 or 1814 probably. Their know children were Warren T.; Reden L.; Emily/Emiline; Carley J. (Martha J.?); and Mary Ann (my husbands line).
