    3. Hi Tom: Caught your email to JOLLY-L@rootsweb.com. There has been various published genealogies over the years tying Joll(e)y's to the Jolliffe family line in England and Virginia/West Virginia. These genealogies are wrong. They were two separate family lines and never were related. The problem also is that in some of the Jolliffe wills and land deeds you will see both Jolliffe and Jolly used in the same document. In wills particularly, this says that the person signing the will did not write it. We make an incorrect assumption that most people in our colonial times were literate when they were not. People relied upon the few government and physicians etc. to write the documents. The name was spelled how it SOUNDED TO THEM. I've seen an a copy of a land grant in VA. made out to a John Jolly by an English colonial official (about 1668) that was actually listed in a will by John Jolliffe. The thing that ties the will and land grant together is the acre size which was 267 acres in both documents. There is a lady by the name of Mary Henke who is well versed in the name problem as she is related to both the Jolly and Jolliffe lines. Her email address is: mlhenke@teleport.com and I suggest you email her. Get copies of any actual documents you use to see if both spellings were used. Again, the Jolliffe line who finally settled in what is now West Virginia are Not Jollys'. Another problem that exists is that the surname, Jolly was also spelled Jolley interchangeably by members some times within a family. I'm related to a Jolley line. Hope this clarifies things some what.
