    3. Hi Jane and St Enoder Jollys, you sent: >I have a list of St Enoder burials - note a Mrs Charity JOLLY > >Mrs Charity Jolly buried April 29 1702 >Henry the son of Henry Jolly buried March 16 1706 >Joseph Jolly buried March 27, 1708 >Anne the daughter of James Jolly bur Nov 10 1729 >John the son of Henry Jolly buried July 11 1731 >Henry Jolly was buried Dec 9 1745 >James Jolly was bur April 5 1754 >Blanch Jolly was bur March 25 1761 >Francis son of James Jolly was bur April 29 1785 >William son of James Jolly was bur May 10 1785 >Frances dau of James Jolly was bur May 13 1785 >James Jolly bur May 1st 1795 >Philippa Jolly bur Nov 8 1795 Mrs Charity Jolly d 1702 was wife of the Joseph JOLLY b 1672 Henry d 1706 s/o Henry was b 1706. Parents Henry Jolly and Mary Rose/Rowe Joseph d 1708 was the widower of Charity above Anne d 1729 d/o James Jolly was b 1715 St En, sister of Rose b 1710, Elizabeth b 1713 and unnamed F b 1717. Who James was I cannot be sure as the most likely candidate was b 1682 the son of Francis Jolly and Rose May. But this James is believed to be the one who married Blanch Osborne 1709 St En and had Catherine b 1713 St Col Maj and a son James birth date unknown. Any suggestions anyone? John d 1731 s/o Henry I cannot find Henry d 1745 b 1675 was most probably the husband of Mary Rose and s/o Joseph and Charity above James d 1754 b about 1682 was the husband of Blanch Osborne Blanch d 1761 was the widow of James above Francis b 1759-d 1785, William b 1765-d 1785 and Frances b 1772-d 1785 are the chn of James Jolly and Philippa Clemowe m 1754 St En. One has to ask what terrible disease took the three of them within two weeks of each other? Typhoid perhaps or complications of some other fever? James d 1795 was the husband of Philippa Clemowe. But where did he come from? Who were his parents and brothers and sisters? Philippa Jolly d 1795 was the widow of James above. She was from St Col Major. James and Philippa had a daughter Philippa but Victoria Dunlop has found that she died between 1790 and 1793 from information she has. If I have anything incorrect please let me know as this is based on information previously posted. 3. Before any one get's too excited: I have the 14th published edition, 1998 of the Register of One-Name Studies, published by The Guild of One-Name Studies, or GOONS, address as given below. I regret to say, neither Jolly nor it's variant Jolley is present in this edition. It may be, that since then, someone has bravely taken up the challenge. The Goon's email address (at as 1998) is guild@one-name.org. Their web site is http://www.one-name.org. I quote from Part 4 - Deposities of past members' records: "Unless a former member has offered the Guild further information regarding the location of his or her research, we are unable to provide any further information than that held in previous editions of the Register of One-Name Studies. "We are advised that much of the material deposited by former Guild members with the Society of Genealogists has not yet been catalogued and is therefore not available for research." There is a publication, available at the Box G address, called "Sources for One-Name Studies and for other Family Historians" by Brian Christmas. UK Price: £2.50 Overseas: £3.50. Stephanie in Kent, UK hunting JOLLEY and JOLLY in NW Kent. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ervin Jensen <eajensen@earthlink.net> To: <JOLLY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2000 12:49 PM Subject: Re: Jolly Locations - everywhere-UPDATE#2 > To all: > There is a book on surnames and an address for surname studies. Imagine a Cornishman saying a name to a Scotsman or a Yorkshireman etc - the implications of the written word is mind boggling to say the least! Kay

    3. Hi Tom: Caught your email to JOLLY-L@rootsweb.com. There has been various published genealogies over the years tying Joll(e)y's to the Jolliffe family line in England and Virginia/West Virginia. These genealogies are wrong. They were two separate family lines and never were related. The problem also is that in some of the Jolliffe wills and land deeds you will see both Jolliffe and Jolly used in the same document. In wills particularly, this says that the person signing the will did not write it. We make an incorrect assumption that most people in our colonial times were literate when they were not. People relied upon the few government and physicians etc. to write the documents. The name was spelled how it SOUNDED TO THEM. I've seen an a copy of a land grant in VA. made out to a John Jolly by an English colonial official (about 1668) that was actually listed in a will by John Jolliffe. The thing that ties the will and land grant together is the acre size which was 267 acres in both documents. There is a lady by the name of Mary Henke who is well versed in the name problem as she is related to both the Jolly and Jolliffe lines. Her email address is: mlhenke@teleport.com and I suggest you email her. Get copies of any actual documents you use to see if both spellings were used. Again, the Jolliffe line who finally settled in what is now West Virginia are Not Jollys'. Another problem that exists is that the surname, Jolly was also spelled Jolley interchangeably by members some times within a family. I'm related to a Jolley line. Hope this clarifies things some what. I have most of the Explorer ordinance maps for Land's End [102], The Lizard [103], Redruth & St Agnes [104], Falmouth & Mevagissey [105], Newquay & Padstow [106], St Austell & Liskeard [107]. The scale on these is 4cm to 1 km. So ............... I am still going through all your bits on the JOLLYs and matching up with Victoria's amendments. I shall check my info on Betsy JOLLY as well. 3. Hi Pat, "Pat Milne" wrote > > I really need to get some sort of detailed map of all the parishes around > St Enoder, Ladock, St Columb Major parts. The David and Charles reprints of the Victorian Ordnance Survey maps (with a good magnifying glass!) are helpful for locating small settlements that don't always appear on modern maps. Cornwall is covered by Sheets 89, 90, 95, 96 and 97. I have 89 and 96 - which cover about 80% of the county and all my areas of interest. Gould Books sell them ($14 each). Their online catalogue is at - http://www.gould.com.au > The IGI maintains that Henry b 1675 St Enoder is the son of JOSEH > (interpreted as JOSEPH rather than JOHN) I have not seen the original > although perhaps Victoria Dunlop has and she may be able to clear up this > mystery for us. > > > >Brian sent the info over as " St Enoder Baptism - The 22nd day of > >January 1675 was baptised Henry the sonn of John Jolly " His words > >were " as much as we can tie it down , it looks like Henry is your > >man" I have Henry, son of Joseph Jolley, bapt. 22 Jan 1675 and have assumed that the unnamed mother is Charity. Joseph and Charity and William and Amy were the only two JOLLY couples producing children in St. Enoder at this time. The children I have listed for Joseph and Charity match those you posted to the list a month or so ago, Pat - 1660 11 Jun Benjamine 1662 22 Apr Charles 1664 12 Apr Cheratie 1665/6 13 Mar Patience 1668 15 Sep Robert 1672 15 Jul Charity 1675/6 22 Jan Henry 1678/9 24 Mar Dorothy Henry and Rose named their children Charity, Henry, Joseph ....... It looks and feels right. I wonder, Pat, would you mind posting the early St. Enoder tree to the list again so that we can all take another look at it. 3. Hi Jane and all St Enoder area Jolly searchers: I really need to get some sort of detailed map of all the parishes around St Enoder, Ladock, St Columb Major parts. I think there are some little churches in between that are no longer marked on current maps but I do not know what they are. Thanks Jane for placing Mawgan in Pyder/Pydar (where does the Lanherne-Rc fit into it?) into its relevant place. I have put together a list of Mawgan in Pydar/ Lanherne-Rc Mawgan in Pyder bp and m's from the IGI if anyone is interested. >Thanks for the info on John JOLLY & Loveday BLACKMORE. Joseph and Harriet are my great grandparents and as Harriet was Welsh I am certain her surname should be DAVIES. Joseph's info re mining captain is on marr and child's birth cert. Family info places him at Moonta but I cannot find anything that definitely places him there. > >Also , you have Elizabeth b 1843 dau of William JOLLY , listed as a >clay labourer ? I've checked back to my original records and found that when I wrote Elizabeth, I had Henry (son of Wm and Philippa) recorded below her and inadvertantly missed him out and transcribed his occupation to her. On the 1861 census Henry aged 20 (b. 1841) and Elizabeth aged 18 (b 1843) were recorded as still living with their parents in St Stephen in Brannel. Henry was a china clay labourer and Elizabeth the dau of a stone cutter. 3. A note to everyone. When I was in England in October, 1999 I went to the London Family History Center. I got some good pulications for resource material. Many of the pulications referred to a Center for One Name Studies in London or Kew. I can find the address etc for particulars. The center specializes in surname studies. everyone and anyone who has researched families by surname is collected there. this means that if Jollys were done 100 years ago, at least a citation referrence would be on file, if not the whole family geneology by surname. Its worth, me, and any of you to check it out. Will get back to you on address or web url etc. yours Erv Jensen eajensen@earthlink.net Kay Hinnrichsen wrote: > Hi Marlene, > > Not at all.
